Handbell Choir Plans For Washington Trip
The board of directors of the council for the retarded of Kosciusko county at their December 3 meeting voted unamiously to accept the invitation, extended to the Cardinal Center Handbell Choir, by Harold Russell, chairman of the President's committee on employment of the handicapped, to play for the annual meeting of the ‘committee* in Washington, D. C. April 15, 1971. The honor of this invitation is further increased by the fact that this represents the first time a group of mentally handicapped persons have been recognized at this level. The inherent responsibility in accepting the invitation lies in the knowledge that the Handbell Choir will be representing not only Warsaw, Kosciusko county, and Indiana, but in effect the over six million mentally handicapped individuals all over the United States The board of directors of Cardinal Center announced that in addition to Mrs. Howard

Wilson, the choir director; and Howard Wilson, the executive director; the chaperones for the trip will be Mrs. Barbara McClure, county health nurse; and Robert Hinshaw, pharmacist and board member, and Mrs. Hinshaw The trip will include social, cultural and educational experiences for the choir members, many of whom will be experiencing a “Once in a lifetime" opportunity. Several performances will be scheduled in the Washington, D.C. area. The minimal budget for the trip will be $4500 to SSOOO No fund raising drive is planned by the board of directors at this time, but no Cardinal Center operational funds may be used It is hoped that the wonderful persons of this community along with the service clubs and organizations will voluntarily respond to the need. The Warsaw Chamber of Commerce is producing a borchure telling about the Cardinal. Center Handbell Choir.
