Maggart 146 SHOPPING FOR HOME GARDENER EASY LAFAYETTE — Christmas offers an excellent opportunity to give the home gardener a useful gift, says John A. Wott, Purdue university extension home environment horticulturist Plants, equipment, gardening tools and books are all welcomed gifts. Books are always good because they help a gardener pass winter hours while waiting for spring. There are single volumes for beginners or multiple volumes with details for avid gardeners. If your gardener has a favorite plant, buy him a gift book on this particular plant, suggests Wott. A garden magazine subscription is another possibility. Magazines are helpful in offering tips on where to obtain new commercial products as well as plant materials. They also give up-to-date tips on the how-to-do things. Perhaps a notebook or file where the gardener can keep current items of interest clipped from newspapers or magazines would have appeal. Most gardeners appreciate a handy reference source. Gardening equipment is always a good buy. Rotary tillers, a hand trowel, spades, lawn sprinklers or pruners all make nice gifts. Or purchase artifical lighting equipment for indoor gardening. For the up-to-date gardener, the new shreddermulcher for chopping leaves, small twigs, and other garden refuse should be considered. Individual types as well as types which fasten onto garden tractors are available. Plants are always ideal gifts. Larger foliage houseplants. such as philodendron, and flowering plants, such as cyclamen and azalea, are excellent. Or make a selection of a tree, shrub, or fruit plant from the local nursery for early spring planting. Talk to nursery people now when they have mare time for discussing your own individual situations.
