Announcement Os Civil Defense Day At Syracuse The national headquarters of the American legion auxiliary has called upon the 50 governors in the United States and mayors of cities across the country to proclaim December 7, 1970 as National Civil Defense Day. Mrs. Charles C. Shaw of Mattoon, 111., national president of the American legion auxiliary, made the announcement from her organization’s national headquarters in Indianapolis. , “In the 29 years since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor,” Mrs. Shaw said, “we have seen the widespread and global hostility of nation against nation with globe circling weapons which may be loosed without warning against any nation in the world. "The lessons we learned at Pearl Harbor taught us the importance of total preparedness, which in these troubled times should be strengthened now more than ever because a community prepared to deal with peacetime hazards, emergencies and disasters, is that much better prepared to cope with the effects of a nuclear attack.” Civil Defense is an organized means of protecting and saving lives, and it is up to all of us, you and me, every member of our organization, to accept this responsibility "in being prepared for something we hope will never happen. Following is a copy of the proclamation as signed by Syracuse town board president A. Byron Connolly this week: WHEREAS, the mission of Civil Defense is to save lives in the event of an attack upon this country and mitigate the effects of peacetime disasters; and WHEREAS, the international situation ran. ins unsettled and the danger of involvement in an all-out war with foreign enemies is ever present; and WHEREAS, our State and Local Defense Agencies are constantly on the alert to protect our citizens from the full range of hazards that pose a threat to their safety and well-being; and WHEREAS, Monday, December 7, 1970, will be observed as Civil Defense Day, by the American Legion Auxiliary; and
