—Do make certain lights are not loose in their sockets. —Do use T'L listed, artificial trees wherever available. While not seeking to mini mize the importance of the preceding perhaps two should be stressed:, circuit overloading and physical in spections Basically, overloads are ere ated by placing more current on a wire than it can handle but not enough to cause a fuse .to blow At Christmas this is usually due to placement of too many bulbs on a single ex tension cord Result: overheat ing; melting insulation; expos ed wire; shock; Electrocution or fire Hence, always look for the capability of the wiring supplying the lighting Examination of the insula tion is a minor task but one of major importance Wiring that has been stored in attics or cellars for a long period pf time can become vulnerable to the, elements Consequently, varying temperatures can eas; ly affect the insulation ,to the point of being incapable of serving its protective purpose Have a safe and very merry holiday

SAFE TOYS ARE BEST LAFAYETTE - Make this Christmas merrier. Buy toys that will intrigue your child again and again, decrease his rough play, and be safe for him to use. • The Child Protection and Toy Safety Act became law soon after last Christmas, says Miss Jan Armstrong, extension consumer marketing specialist at Purdue university. This new law amended the Federal Hazardous Substances Act to cover toys with electrical, mechanical, and thermal hazards. The lawauthorized the Department of Health, Education and Welfare to ban unsafe toys from the market. Even with the new law. unsafe toys may still appear on the Christmas shelves this year because of lack of funds allotted to HEW for enforcement. Once toys are put on the shelf, no one removes them until some unsuspecting parent buys them for his child. Manufacturers or sellers seldom take them away first. So the tender, loving care needed to protect the safety of your children must come from you. What can you do? Try these precautions; Read the labels; your child may not be able to.
Watch for warnings and if you have doubts about .the toy’s safety, forget it. Check dolls, rattles, and other toys for sharp spikes used to hold them together. Buy battery-operated toys for youngsters under seven and UL approved electrical toys for older ones. Look for smooth and rolled edges on toys. Be sure gears and springs are enclosed. Avoid protruding parts. Test the toys before you wrap them. Christmas may be ruined if

a longed-for toy breaks before the turkey is carved. Children use toys, not watch them. They walk on them, stomp them, sit on them, and crawl with them, reminds the specialist. Don’t forget cider-based punches make good holiday season drinks. Used in combination with other fruit flavors, your punch could be a highlight of the festive period, say extension horticulturists at Purdue university.
