County Extension Service News ■M ■■ OHB 0888 «■» ■■ ■■ 8888 MB MB MB M By ANN HANCOCK Education, Consumer's t Defense The consumer workshop entitled "Confusion in the Market Place” held in South Bend and Valparaiso, was most successful I only wish that more people from this county could have attended one of the workshops. Speakers for the program included the president of the Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan Chicago. a representative from the Food and Drug Administration, a member of Nadar's Raiders, and the Associate Director of the Office of Consumer Education I would like to share with you some of the mainpoints of the speakers. Doris Sasser from the Office of Consumer Education cautioned us concerning dangerous toys With Christmas coming up many of us will be purchasing toys for our children or those of friends and relatives We need to be especially careful to check the toys for labels identifying the materials used in the toy and the construction Mrs. Sasser stated that she has asked retailors to show her the inner construction of toys that she wanted to purchase She showed a baby rattle with an outer covering of cardboard and inside sharp metal spikes She stressed the fact that we should be sure to report any unsafe toys that we purchase or our children receive as gifts It is; up to us to help protect other consumers. James Turner, an attorney and one of "Nadar’s Raders” feels that business has become so powerful that the Food and Drug
Administration cannot act efficiently. He encourages everyone to write to the Center for the Study erf Responsive Law, Washington, D. C. and the Food and Drug Administration if we come across any deceptive practices. Consumers need to work together to protect each other. All of the speakers felt that education of the consumer was most important. They felt that consumer economics should be a part of all high school curriculums. Adults need to educate themselves by reading and studying so that they might be less confused consumers. It is our right and responsibility as consumers. I detest the fact that our own courts of law render the decisions they have in the past regarding the reading of the Bible. I for one. will read my Bible any place and time that I chose, be it in front of the White House, the Supreme Court Building and will read it inside if possible to get in. As I see and decide the question at hand, when any Astronaut is traveling in outer space he is in an area that belongs to God. where no man can dictate as to man’s law. there is only the legal word of God. it can 6e found in the Bible. Keep your head high and your chin in. if our astronauts want to read the Bible from outerspace, let them, and we should all listen as they quote the Bible. Sincerely yours, Lionel L. Harmison. Maj. Ret. AUS.
