enlisted men at the Cape May, New Jersey, Recruit Training Center has been extended to 10 weeks. The additional week will provide driver education for 40 per cent of the trainees and advanced seamanship training for the remaining recruits. The National Highway Safety Bureau is sponsoring the driving safety course as part of a
research project to develop better methods of teaching. The Development Education Training Research Institute of the American university will be conducting the safety course. The new educational concept is anticipated to be the biggest driver training program ever conducted for the purpose of research. Those men not taking the
driver course will participate in an intensive boat handling course. The 32 hours of small boat instruction they will receive consists of classroom training and 16 hours of practical experience. The men will operate a fleet of ten 30-foot utility boats on the intracoastal waterways and the off-shore waters of the Atlantic. They will participate in
simulated search and rescue missions and learn elementary small boat navigation. They will also learn basic motorboat operating procedures. The new safety and boat handling curriculum will add to the knowledge they gained during the previous nine weeks of training, resulting in better trained and qualified coast guardsmen.
