They represent the top players on the Wawasee high school football team. >■ Hunziker was named as a tackle Monday night for the first team of the Northern Lakes Conference all conference team, Fribley was named an end. Mikel a halfback and Blue quarterback on the second team. Both Richardson, a halfback, and Korenstra. a fullback, received honorable mention. The awards were presented at theconference banquet held at Bremen Monday evening. Bremen placed first in football competition with Wawasee second and Warsaw third. Jim baseball coach of the state championship Washington Clay team, was speaker.
Wawasee Ties Warsaw 8-8 To Finish 2d In Conference
* By JOHN BAHN Wawasee tied Warsaw 8-8 last Wednesday night to finish its first season in the Northern Lakes Conference in second place Bremen, the only conference team to defeat the Warriors during the season, now stands alone in first place. A victory over Warsaw Wednesday would have given the Warriors a share of first place Warsaw finished in third place because of the tie. had they defeated Wawasee. the Warriors team would have finished in the third position The Warriors entertained Warsaw’s Tigers on the Wawasee field Wednesday. It was the last game of the season for the local boys The first quarter started off with Warsaw’s Jim Kaufman kicking off to Wawasee's Donn May With a minute into the game an illegal procedure penalty was called against Wawasee for five yards Following this Wawasee punted l-ate in the quarter Warsaw fumbled and Wawasee recovered With 4:19 left in the quarter Warsaw attempted a touchdown pass only to have it blocked by the Warriors Seven seconds later Warsaw's Mike Simpson received a handoff and ran 12 yards for a touchdown with the extra points run good Warsaw then kicked with Wawasee’s Russ Mikel receiving for a two-yard gain With 3:03 left m the quarter Kaufman intercepted On the next play Donn May and Mikel blocked an attempted touchdown pass With 2:44 left in the quarter Wawasee's Tim Blue passed to Joe Baumgartner for a first down Warsaw took over the ball because of an offside call against Wawasee Several seconds later clipping penalty against Warsawcaused a 10-ya rd loss With 9:24 left in the half Wawasee’s Tom Fribley intercepted With 4:35 remaining Warsaw's Rick Kerlin punted Mikel received and ran a 15-yard return With 1:58 remaining Warsawfumbled and Warrior John Rhodes recovered. With the clock running out and only 54 seconds remaining Tiger Bob Longenecker intercepted a pass Warsaw kicked off at the beginning of the third quarter and Wawasee’s Rex Hunziker recovered and ran 33 yards Later with 7’40 left in the quarter, Warsaw fumbled and Tom Fribley recovered With 6:39 left Joe Baumgartner received a 12-yard pass for a first down for Wawasee Only 20 seconds into the final quarter Warsaw punted for 25
yards Later with 8:40 left the Tigers fumbled and Donn May recovered The high point in the game for Wawasee came when Blue prepared to pass but darted in for a touchdown Rex Hunziker ran for the extra point. Following this with 7:34» remaining m the quarter Hun ziker intercepted a pass from W arsaw Blue ran for a first down with 6.12 remaining Later with 4 14 left in the game a penalty was called against Warsaw for unsportsmanlike conduct. With 4 12 left in the game Warsaw was thrown for a three-yard loss With 3 10 remaining a 10-yard penalty was called against Warsaw Wawasee's attempts for a second touchdown were futile in the last few minutes of the game. He was presented a certificate from the board and Robert Freiser. cross country coach was also honored. Glen K. Longenbaugh, superintendent of schools, made suggestions as to the revision of the school hand-book stating that the retirement age be changed from 65 to 66 The 1970-71 handbook was given out to board members by the administration. Three senior members from the West Noble student council attending the meeting and proposed some changes in the dress code The motion to accept these changes was passed by the board. A progress report was given on the new high school building with members stating that they were not completely satisfied with the present rate of progress Lloyd Ness, principal at the
f Wawaka building, gave the report on a recent meeting he had attended at Fort Wayne, on the narcotic problem. He preported hearing very interesting speakers and suggested that a class on this subject be taught next year as he felt that education on the subject would bring the best answer to the problem. The motion was passed to pay attorney fees on the building project of 1 per cent with a total due of $20,000 to the Campbell estate. In other business Longenbaugh was given permission to purchase moveable equipment for classrooms of the new school and to acquire bids for same. It was also suggested that the Washington Center building be used in the future program to house the auto mechanics division Permission was given for Lloyd Ness. Robert Wechter. and Roger Schermerhorn to attend the principal's meeting at Purdue. REPLOGLE FAMILY DINNER SATURDAY The Oliver and Barbara Ellen Replogle annual get-to gether was held Saturday at the Milford fire station. Daughters of the Replogles who were present were Mrs Mary Hight of South Bend, oldest person present. Mrs. Howard (Dorothy) Voris and Mrs. Glen (Ruth) Tom, both of Elkhart. Over 80 persons were present from Goshen. Elkhart, Nappanee. Mishawaka. South Bend 'and Milford The youngest person present was two-week old Paul Shelton, grandson of Mrs. Barbara (Replogle > Cripe. Another get-together was planned for next year at the same time.

Wawasee Prep Opens Basketball Season
Friday night. Nov. 13. Wawasee Prep will open its 197071 basketball season, hosting the Bryant Owls. Coach Rex Yentes, in his third year at Prep, has three starters returning from his ‘69-‘7O team which won nine and lost nine. Coach Yentes has a good nucleus to build around with sophomore Sylvester Allen of Chicago, junior. Rick Mertz of Defiance. 0., and senior Mike Elward of Wabash. Allen was second leading scorer and leading rebounder on last year’s team Mertz led the Lakers in assists and was third highest scorer. Elward was fourth in scoring and second in rebounding in 1969 Coach Yentes feels that two of the toughest games of the season will be the first week end. Bryant has all five starters returning from last year’s squad, led by senior guard Tom Weidel who averaged better than 30-points per game last year. Saturday night. Nov. 14, Wawasee Prep will travel to South Whitley to take on the Bulldogs who have center. Tom Davis, back again. The rest of the Laker varsity consists of seniors: Kent Ryan of Fort Wayne and Bryan Goodall of Crown Point: juniors: Ed Binzel of Washington Court House, 0., Rod Martin of South Bend, and Mark Sisko of Patterson.
