Wawasee Shuts Out Manchester 20-0
By JOHN BAHN The Wawasee Warriors smashed North Manchester in a hard rushing game last Friday at Wawasee The first quarter started off with Wawasee’s Donn May kicking off to Manchester-opd the two teams battled down to the wire With 34 seconds gone Wawasee’s Kim Cripe rushed through the Manchester offensive line for a three-yard pass against Manchester Later in the quarter Manchester punted 30 yards with Wawasee’s Russ Mikel receiving There was no punt return With 8:24 in the quarter Manchester’s Mike Burke intercepted and with 3:27 left in the quarter. Wawasee’s Donn May received a punt from Manchester and ran an 11 yard return. In the second quarter with only 10 seconds gone Russ Mikel received a handoff and ran 15 yards Tim Blue passed to Tom Fribley for another 15 yards Russ Mikel rushed through an opening in the Manchester defense for a 10-yard gain for Wawasee With 9 20 left in the quarter. Wawasee’s May dashed (or a first down, missing a touchdown by one yard Mikel crashed through the Manchester defense for the touchdown With 8:25 remaining m the quarter Wawasee’s Rex Hunziker plowed through the Manchester
Wawasee Reserves Down Manchester Warrior reserves played another outstanding game of defense this past week defeating Manchester 14-0. This was the third shut out recorded by the reserves and gave them a season record of five wins, two losses and one-tie John Rhoads, who played a great game as quarterback, started the scoring with a seven yard scoring pass to Bill Leemon The Warrior offense completely * dominated the first half but could only score six points and halftime score was 6-0 In the second half. Rhoads again found Leemon open for a 15-yard scoring pass Juan Pena threw to Leemon for the twopoint conversion the defense took over from this point and limited Manchester to only 11 yards for the game. The defense was~led by Tatman. Schium. Bauman. Tim Blue passed to Donn May for a 13-yard gain with 2:35 remaining. Later Blue was thrown for a 13-yard loss. With 20 seconds remaining in the half Blue passed to Mikel for a 75yard run for another touchdown, a play that duplicated one play which occurred in the Rochester game. At half-time, junior high football players and their parents from Milford. North Webster and Syracuse were honored With 25 seconds in the third quarter Wawasee’s Mikel received a hand off and ran 13 yards Later Manchester’s Bill Kreider intercepted the ball With 8:25 remaining Donn May deflicted a pass and kept Manchester from a possible score. With 6:58 remaining Wawasee punted but was called back because of a roughing the kicker penalty, giving an automatic first down to the Warriors Russ Mikel later faked a punt and ran for a first down With five seconds gone in the fourth quarter Tim Blue passed to Tom Fribley for a touchdown Blue then passed to Russ Mikel for the extra points. Prep Junior Varsity Ends Season, Defeats Northridge
.On Wednesday. Oct. 20, Wawasee Preparatory junior varsity met Northridge of Middlebury on Prep’s home field for the final game of Prep's football season. It was the Wawasee Prep Lakers game all the way with the final score 26-0. Statistics P N Yards rushing 289 23 Yards passing 60 27 Passes attempted 17 12 Passes completed 7 6 Interceptions 4 0 First downs 8 2 Howard Witherspoon of Niles. Mich. made one interception, Crit Witherspoon of South Bend made one and Ray Vanett of South Bend made the other two. Manchester fumbled the ball with 1:45 remaining The Squires recovered but lost six yards in the play. With 51 seconds remaining Wawasee’s Blue passed to May only three yards from the goal. - PHIL WYSONG Wysong Wins Title At Sectional Phil Wysong. a junior at West Noble high school, won the individual honors at the Elkhart cross-country sectional. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Wysong of r 1 Wawaka. At 16 he is six feet, two inches tall and weighs 160 pounds. His outstanding accomplishments in cross country began last year when he placed first in the NECC conference meet with 10:09. first in the Churubusco invitational, second in the Manchester invitational, first in the Elkhart sectional, second in the Fort Wayne regional and 12th in the state meet. He has broken the record on every 7 course that he has run on this year. He was first again in the NECC meet with a time of 9:17 and placed first in the Churubusco invitational. invitational prior to walking off with the sectional honors. He also did very well in track last spring. As a sophomore he won the Elkhart sectional mile run with a time of 4:30. He placed second behind Fort Wayne North Side’s Tim Zumbaugh, with a time of 4:20. Phil advanced to the ’ state track meet where he placed fifth in the mile run with a time of 4:19.6. LAKELAND LOCALS Mike Zimmerman and Richard Bender of Milford, attended the Wawasee football game Friday evening, while Mrs. Zimmerman and daughter Kara, spent the evening visiting with ■ Mrs. Bender and daughter Jennifer.
