National School Lunch Week October 11-17
The theme for National School Lunch Week is “School Lunch Supports Effective Education.” The Americal School Food Service Association is stressing their basic philosophy of "Always the Children First." As last year, a universal menu is being served throughout the nation on Wednesday, Oct. 14. The meal features chicken; homemade biscuits and butter; green peas; crisp coleslaw; cranberry jelly; oatmeal raisin cookies and ice cold milk. Each day foods should supply people with many different nutrients. Proteins for growth and repair of the body, minerals and vitamins for growth and to keep the functioning properly, and fats and carbohydrates for energy. Most foods contain more than one nutrient, but no single food contains all the nutrients in the amount needed. The U. S. D. A. has set the standards for schools participating in the school lunch program. An adequate lunch must provide one-third or more of one days’ nutritive requirements for a 9-12 year-old boy as recommended by the National Research Council to be designated a “Type A" lunch. To obtain the maximum rate of reimbursement under the National School Lunch Act. such a lunch must contain at least: A) 4 pt. whole milk as a beverage. B) two oz. meat or poultry

(cooked edible portion), canned or cooked fish, or cheese; or 4 cup cooked dry beans, peas or soybeans, or four tablespoons peanut butter or one egg. Protein requirements may be met by serving 4 the required quantities of each of two proteins, 04 cup raw or canned vegetable and-or fruit. 4 cup fruit or vegetable juice may be served in meeting 4 of the requirements. D) One portion bread, muffins, cornbread, biscuits or other hot bread made of whole grain cereal or enriched flour. E) One teaspoon butter or fortified margarine. By making a good selection of foods within the frame work of the Type “A” Pattern, school cooks can be sure that the school lunch will provide all the key nutrients that are essential to the growth and well-being of children. Studies have shown that vitamins A and C are the nutrients most likely to be short in childrens diets. School lunch menus include a vitamin C food every day and a vitamin A food at least twice a week. Miss Carol Mynhier of Milford was the week end guest of Mrs. Buena Smith and sons, Jerry and Billy, and granddaughter, Carol Ann Harold. The Smith family and Miss Mynhier were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Buddy- Smith and children, Amy and Davey. All are from Royal Center.

We can cut our school taxes by cutting out the excessive administrative expense, and non essential misc. expenses, and the cumulative building fund. We can have a better school system by putting our emphasis on education instead of how much can we spend. Why should it cost the taxpayers 1200.00 more per student in our school than it cost the Warsaw taxpayers for their students. Vote for WILLIAM BRAMMER for the School Board. ADV.
