' Environmental Workshops Sponsored By Wells A unique program to make teachers and administrators acutely aware of current ecological and environmental problems is being carried on by State School Superintendent Richard D. Wells. Continuous weekend conservation workshops are being held in various state parks, fish and game areas, state forests, and 4-H camps across Indiana by Joe Wright, consultant for conservation and outdoor education. This new approach to educator in-service training has been designed to develop favorable attitudes toward the national priority of solutions to environmental pollution. The week*end group camps give teachers and administrators the opportunity to study various environmental-ecological problems and possible solutions to the problems. The educators then go back and implement suggestions for conservation education in their own schools. Classes in geology, wildlife, plants, techniques for teaching conservation education, ecology, outdoor laboratories, environmental education, and outdoor education are conducted by experts in their particular fields. They provide teachers and administrators with background information needed to develop programs in conservation and outdoor education. The group camp concept gives the educators and their families an ideal opportunity to live and learn together in a natural setting. Many educators bring trailers or tents and prepare their own meals, rather than stay in workshop cabins. Regardless of which accomodations are chosen, everyone is invited to attend the stimulating classes and discussions. Upon completion of a weekend workshop, the participants have (a) become acquainted with environmental materials; (b) acquired techniques for teaching environmental education; (c) gained an appreciation of environmental education in relation to other school subjects; and (d) increased their awareness of environmental education objectives. AU educators attending the in-service training program receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by Richard D. Wells, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. So far about 1800 educators have been reached directly through the workshops; the number is rising steadily as the praises of the program are sung across the state. Superintendent Wells urges all educators to attend these fascinating and timely workshops. ■■■ ■■■ ■■■ ■■■ aaaa oms « County Extension Service News ■■■ ■■ ■■■ ■■ By ANN HANCOCK Various Facets Os H. E. Program Many people are unaware of the various facets of the extension homemakers program. The primary structure is the club. Any homemaker with a desire to learn may join an extension homemakers club. You do not need to be invited to join, merely call the extension office at Warsaw and we will make the contacts for you. The primary purpose of the club is educational. Lessons are presented concerning the various aspects of homemaking and ideas are exchanged among the members. These lessons are open to any interested women. The dates are usually announced in this column. There is one club in the county which is unique. That is the Choral Club. They do not take lessons or have the usual type of meeting. But they sing the hours away! Miss Mary Jane Miller, director of the chorus has done a wonderful job — and has made our chorus one of the best. The chorus will sing for any group. Contact Mrs. Richard Whittenberger, r 2 Akron, for more information. Sunflower Seeds Anyone? „ I had an interesting request, I would like to share with you. A homemaker called and wanted to know how to salt sunflower seeds. I must say it stumped me for a while. But I asked around and found out that anyone should know that. (That was one thing they over looked- in college). Here’s how you do it: Soak the seeds over-night in a salt brine. The amount of salt would depend on individual preference. Remove the seeds from the salt water and place them on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 4 hour. Thought you might enjoy trying it! • Recipe The recipe this week is from the Chit Chat Extension Homemakers club. They served the chicken salad at the district workshop and president council meeting and everyone thought it was delicious. Hope you enjoy it!
