Herbert Baumgartner, Retired Milford Businessman, Dies Saturday, Sept. 19
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Milford United Methodist church for Herbert William Baumgartner, 70, well-known Milford resident and retired businessman. Baumgartner died at 10 am. Saturday as he was working in his garden. He suffered a heart attack. The deceased was the son of Emil and Emma (Beer) Baumgartner and was born at Cissna Park, DI., on April 2,1900. He had resided at the intersection of James and Catherine streets in Milford for 57 years. On April 6, 1940 he was married to Edith Rogers who survives. He owned and operated the Standard station on state road 15 in Milford for 37 years, purchasing the business on August 1, 1933 from Robert Groves. He retired on January 1 of this year after selling the station to Robert Ruch. He was a member of Kosciusko Lodge 418 F and AM, South Bend Scottish Rite. Murat Shrine at Indianapolis and Kosciusko County Shrine club. He was a charter member and took an active part in forming the Milford Lions club and was retired from the volunteer fire department. Baumgartner was also an active member of the Republican party having served as advisory board member for Van Buren township under trustees John F. Augsburger, Ray Ferverda. Noble W. Neff and currently under John Davidsen He was not seeking re-election in the coming November election Baumgartner was also a candidate for

Wilbur, Arthur and Arch, all of Milford; three sisters. Mrs Helen Funk and Miss Edith Baumgartner, both of Milford, and Mrs. Clara Marie Ballard of Ottumwa. Two brothers and three sisters. William Harry. Edna, Venita and Delight preceded him in death. Rev. Richard Sumner. OSL, former minister of the Milford church, officiated at the senices Burial was in the Milford cemetery with Masonic senices at the graveside Henry L. Pletcher Funeral services for Henry L. Pletcher. 76, brother of Walter J. Pletcher of Syracuse, were held Thursday afternoon at the Nappanee Church of the Brethren. Mr. Pletcher died at his r 1 Nappanee home Tuesday morning Burial was in Union Center cemetery He was bom in Wakarusa on June 6. 1894 and married Beulah
Hall on June 5, 1912. He was a member of the Church of the Brethren. Surviving are the widow, three daughters, one other brother, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. William H. Johnson Funeral services for William H. Johnson, 78, r 1 Monroe, father of Mrs. Douglas (Lorraine) Allen and Mrs. Carl (Dorothy) Hunziker, both of North Webster, were held Sunday at Decatur and burial was in Decatur cemetery. Mr. Johnson died early Friday morning at the clinic hospital in Bluffton where he had been a patient for one day. A retired farmer and Yost Construction Co. employee, Mr. Johnson was bom to Leander and Elizabeth (Hardin) Johnson on July 25,1892 in Van Wert county, Ohio. He was married January 1, 1911 to Eva P. Boch and she preceded him in death September 12, 1970. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Chattanooga, O. Surviving in addition to the two CNorth Webster daughters are six other daughters, Mrs. Orville (Mary) Royer of Decatur, Mrs. Robert (Juanita) Young and Mrs. Orland (Beatrice) Hawkins, both of Marion. Mrs. Carl (Geraldine) Johnson and Mrs. Patty Simerman. both of Fbrt Wayne, and Mrs. Glen (Shirley) Everett of Pleasant Mills; three sons, Harold (Jack) Johnson of Lancaster, Calif., and Richard and Billy Johnson, both of Monroe; one brother. Arthur, Santa Ana. Calif.; 38 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Charles Eugene Hite Funeral services were held Sunday for Charles Eugene Hite, 69. of r 4 Goshen, formerly of the Syracuse and Millersburg areas. He died at LaGrange County hospital where he had been a patient following a stroke on Tuesday. Mr. Hite was bom in Eden township November 2. 1900 and resided all of his life in the above areas. He was employed for 33 years with the Wabash railroad, retiring in 1959 On January 20, 1951, he married Louise Counterman Hapner and she Also surviving are three sons, Galen of South Whitley, Lowell of Goshen and Albert. (Lucille) Whirledge, Millersburg, Mrs. Robert (Georgia) Mard of Noblesville and Mrs. Dennis (Rosa Mae) Young, Dunlap; 22 grandchildren; four sisters and three brothers. The Rev. Nevin H. Zuck officiated and burial was in Brown cemetery at Millersburg. Dr. David M. Jenkins Dr. David M. Jenkins. 67, a physician and surgeon in Bloomington since 1937 and husband of the tormer Virginia Bachman of Syracuse, died September 13 at Saint Joseph s hospital there following a heart attack on September 1 while driving his car. A former president of the Illinois Obstetrical and Gynecological society, he first practiced as a surgeon at a mining camp in Kentucky in 193437. Dr. Jenkins was a 1929 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan university and received his medical degree in 1933 at Rush Medical school He was a staff physician at Brokaw and Saint Joseph's hospitals before becoming ill. Dr. Jenkins was a charter member of the Illinois Obstetrical and Gynecological society which was organized in 1946 to help spread knowledge of diseases affecting women. He served as a captain in the ArmyMedical Corps in WWII under General George Patton in Europe. He was also president of the McLean County Medical society in 1953. a 30-year member of the Kiwanis club, member of the Bloomington Country club and the Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. Dr. Jenkins was bom August 20, 1903 in El Paso, a son of I. J. and Kathryn (Stock) Jenkins and was united in marriage in Bloomington on November 14, 1934 to Virginia Bachman of Syracuse, a sister of Mrs. James (Laura) Stucky of north Shore Drive, Syracuse. Survivors include the widow; two sons, David M. of Fairfax. Va., and Charles H., of Chicago; a daughter, Mrs. Deoorah D. Progar, Lakewood Colo., and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister. Services were held last Wednesday at the Second Presbyterian church of which he was a member and burial was in East Lawn cemetery. Charles E. Johnson Charles E. Johnson, 61, of r 2 Syracuse, died unexpectedly at 11:15 Monday night at Goshen hospital of complications due to a heart condition. He was admitted to the hospital around 9 a.m. Monday morning following a call to the Syracuse first aid department after suffering an attack at his home. Oxygen was administered by the unit prior to hospital admission. Mr. Johnson was bom at Union Mills on May 16, 1909 to James and Cora Mae (Linard) Johnson. On February 28, 1940. he married Effie Brown and she survives. They moved to Papakeechie Lake from Ligonier 18 years ago. He was a retired truck driver, retiring two years ago due to health reasons, from the Harriett Trucking Co, East Palestine, Ohio. He was a member of the Teamsters Union 710 out of Chicago. Surviving in addition to the wife are four sons. Minnie Jarboe Mrs. Minnie May belle (Smith) Jarboe. 93. mother of Mrs. Clarence (Clara) Fike of Waubee lake, died early today at Miller's Merry Manor at Warsaw, where she had been a patient for two weeks. Mrs. Jarboe was born at Council Bluffs. lowa. May 2, 1877, and had resided with the Fike's for many years. Her husband, Samuel Louis Jarboe. to whom she was married Sept. 10, 1901. died April 19. 1953. Surviving in addition to the daughter are three sons, Clyde O. Jarboe of Phoenix,Ariz..Floyd L. Jarboe of Dallas, Texas, and Virgil H. Jarboe of Colo, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 29 greatgrandchildren; two foster daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Maj-garet) Keltner of Stratford. Mo. and Mrs. Ray (Helen) Veselak of Knoxville, Iowa; and a sister, Mrs. Bertha Carlburg of Kingman. Kan. Services were held Sunday at the Peace Valley Church of Brethren in Missouri. Burial was in the New Hope cemetery. Mrs. Doris Darnell Mrs. Doris Darnell, 54. of r 4 Syracuse, passed away Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Prarie View Rest Home at Warsaw where she was admitted on Tuesday. She has been in failing health for sometime due to cancer. Death was due to complications. Mrs. Darnell was bom at Anderson on January 30. 1916 a daughter of Charles and Lottie M. (Surber) Adams. She was a resident of the Syracuse community for the past ten years, coming here from rushville. An accountant, she owned her own accounting and tax service and was also associated in the real estate business. Mrs. Darnell was a member of the accounting society and a member of the Calvary United Methodist church. Surviving in addition to her mother at Muncie are a brother. Chester F. Adams of Sarasota, Fla., and a sister, Mrs. Nellie Rozelle at Muncie. Friends may call at the Harris Funeral home at Syracuse after 2:30 Thursday afternoon until time of the service on Friday at 1:30. Rev. Kennard Robinson will officiate and burial will be in Syracuse cemetery. LIONS HEAR REPORT ON UNITED FUND Members of the Milford Lions club met Monday evening in the fire station and heard a talk on the United Fund Drive currently underway The fire station is now the official home of the Lions. During the business meeting Jerry Bushong and Richard Hepler were appointed to the Halloween committee and will work with the Legion and Auxiliary in planning the annual event for the youngsters of the town. After the meeting members went to the funeral home to pay tribute to Herbert Baumgartner, a charter member of the club, who died on Saturday.

County hospital, Columbia City. William Kem of south Main street, Syracuse, has been released from Elkhart following treatment for seven weeks. Mrs. Jean May of r 2 Leesburg was admitted to Murphy Medical Center Wednesday. Robert Auer of r 1 Milford was dismissed from the Bremen hospital Friday. Miss Martha Groves has been a patient at the Om nursing home for the past two weeks. Mrs. S. Knochel, sister of Mrs.' Emma Krauter of r 1 Milford, has been a patient in the Elkhart hospital for the past two weeks. Arnold Caudill of Leesburg was treated in the emergency room of Murphy Medical Center over the week end. Dick Widup of Milford returned home Saturday morning from the Goshen hospital where he had undergone surgery. William Martin of Milford has been in the Elkhart hospital a week and will undergo surgery today (Wednesday). Mrs. Don Tarner of Leesburg was admitted to Murphy Medical Center Monday. Fred Vining of r 2 Milford was treated in the emergency room of Murphy Medical Center Monday. LAKELAND LOCALS The Misses Francelia, Hermine, and Alma Beer and Mrs. Katherine Deturk of Mansfield, Ohio, were week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Beer and Sandra of r 1 Milford. Mrs. Beer -served a duck dinner Friday for the birthday of her husband* and his twin sister, Miss Francelia Beer. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Mock of Kissimmee. Fla., left Sunday after spending several weeks in the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Dane Rarick of near Milford and visiting in the area. William Perry of Milford is visiting in Indiana Harbor for a few days. Mrs. Pret Poe had as her week end guests, a niece Mrs. Pearl Hunt of Warsaw.
