14 YEARS AGO, OCT. 4,1956 Roberta Amsden, small daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lemoyne Amsden, was knocked down by a truck driven by Paul Ruch as he came out from the alley Tuesday morning at eight o’clock. She was unhurt. Dewey H. Wyland, 58, a resident of Long Beach, Calif., was killed in an auto accident Tuesday. His widow is the former Gertrude Wolferman. They resided in Milford before moving' to California. The Milford town board members entertained their wives at dinner Saturday evening in a nearby Warsaw restaurant. Present were Dr. and Mrs. Carey Parrett, Mr. and Mrs. Hoy Jones, and Mr. and Mrs. Victor Beer. Starr Eileen was bom to Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Martin at Great Lakes, DI., September 29. Mrs. Martin is the former Elsie KHne of Milford. Miss Helene Lentz suffered a severe cut on her head Tuesday while at her place of employment at the Chicago Telephone Supply Company in Elkhart. Kenneth Hagans and Donald Beer are in Syracuse. N.Y., attending the Neppco show. Before returning home they will visit poultry houses in the eastern states. Miss Alice Yeater of New Paris and Rev. Alastair Lamont of Stirling. Loch Lomond, Scotland, were married Saturday at 4 p.m. in the New Paris Methodist church. 24 YEARS AGO. Oct. 3,1946 Mr. and Mrs. David Clem of Goshen became the parents of a son, David Bruce, bom early Sunday morning. Sept. 29, in the Goshen hospital. The mother was formerly Florence Coy of Milford. Mr. and Mrs. Carlos Ewing of Saint David. 111., are the parents of a daughter. Sue Ellen, bom September 15. Mrs. Ewing is the former Dorothy Kelly of Milford. Township trustee Vem Wysong completed the refinishing of the Milford school gym Friday. Mr. Wysong did much of the work himself over a period of several months. The floor was re-sanded, waxed, and the regulation basketball lines were repainted. The Sorosis club met Monday evening with Mrs. Harry Phend. Mrs. Ronald Brown gave a very able report of the book. “While Time Remains,” by Leslie Stowe. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kline have announced their plans to open a pastry shop in Milford. They will locate in the building just south of the Milford Hotel. While watching the Homecoming contests last Thursday afternoon, “Hap” Carlton recalled that when he and Harry Martin were about 16-years-old they won a three-legged contest at a Milford homecoming several years ago. 30 YEARS AGO, OCT. 3.1940 Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Miller entertained the softball team at a potluck supper Friday. Those present were Messrs, and Mesdames Randall Dewart, Johnnie Fisher, Eugene Estep, Donald DeFries, Jerry Bushong, Don Tribble, George Haab, and and Messrs. Darrel Orn. Marvin Brumbaugh, Harry Haab, Herbert Felkner, and Dick Miller. Mrs. Henry Beer entertained at a dinner party last Thursday evening in honor of the 14th birthday of her daughter. Lois Marie. Those present were Kathryn Graff, Frances Piper, Marguerite Beer, Doris Myers, and Lorene Beer. Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Doty, Mrs. Pearl Locke, and Mrs. Melvin Lyon were in Edwardsburg, Mich., Monday, gathering cranberries. John K. Gerber, 60, died of a paralytic stroke Sunday at the home of his son, Valentine Gerber, south of Nappanee. A daughter, Mrs. Roman Slabaugh, and a son, Floyd Gerber, are among the survivors. Miss June Coy is leading the county in securing the greatest number of members to the Kosciusko County Young Republican Club. The new and more complete Pure Oil Service Station, located on road 15 in Milford and operated by Noble 1 Miller, will hold a grand opening Saturday, Oct. 5. Milford citizens get first sight of new boulevard lights Monday night. Eighteen members and a guest, Mrs. E. E. Purdum of Appomattos, Va., met with Mrs Charles Purdum Monday evening for the second regular meeting of the Sorosis club. 40 YEARS AGO, OCT. 2,1930 A letter from Miss Frieda Schori, who is employed in the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Bissell, Rockville, conn., stated that they have returned to their winter home and are having real summer weather. Miss Schori, formerly of Milford, is enjoying the New England states very much. Mr. and Mks. George B. Riley of near Milford announce the marriage of their daughter, Miss Beulah Riley, to Eldon Neff of New Paris. The marriage occurred on August 17 at Knox. Funeral services for B. F. Deahl, 67, a prominent Goshen attorney and businessman who died of heart trouble Thursday morning, were held Saturday afternoon. Jerry Mullett, 8-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Mullett, residing on a farm miles south of Nappanee, was fatally injured Friday when a trailer in which he was riding with seven other boys, broke loose from the coupe and upset. Mrs. Charles Sparklin will hold a crochet contest during this month and has some nice prizes on display which will go to the ladies completing the best crocheted articles by November 3. Those who have entered the contest up to this time are Mrs. Belle Pinkerton, Mrs. Hazel Vanderveer, Miss Dorothea Groves, Mrs. Elsie Overleese, Mrs. Edna Jensen, Mrs. Ada Gunther, and Mrs. Clarissa Phillips.
