It’s been a grand summer and everyone had been busy.visiting all the exciting places around the ’ Lakeland area for truly historical Wawasee is a wonderful place to spend the summer. Mr. Harkless drawings have taken us back to by-gftie days as we viewed once again the Avalon, a house boat built in 1902 • for William Fortune of Indianapolis; The Tavern hotel in Brunjes park where W. A. Johnson and Paul O. Penn now have summer homes, the Lilly home where the family has stayed since the fall of 1886 when visiting the lake; the Look

Seth marked his T Ist birthdas on Tuesdaj of this week, but on Sundas a large number of friends dropped by his home on the east shores of Lake Wawasee to wish him well. His friends at Wawasee Prep brought a large cake to mark the occasion. In this photo Ward is standing by the railing atop the lakefront apartment catching the late afternoon breeze. Behind him is his bell tower or gazebo and on the right are piers that line the lake front.

Out cottage on the south side of Wawasee which was originally built in 1894 and known as the Pottawattamie’ club, it was purchased in 1901 by Fred Rusch (rs Indianapolis and has been in the Rusch family for five generations. We’ve also seen the Vawter Park Hotel that burned on May 28.1910; the second hotel that was also destroyed by fire on June 4, 1918; and the South Shore Inn which burned in October of 1964. Through Mr. Harkless’ drawings the readers of this page have returned once again to sail the waters of Wawasee in a Lilly sail boat that was built in 1897 and christened Monoquet after one of the local Indian chiefs; seen again the Wawasee Inn. built in 1892 by Colonel Lilly and associates to. replace the Cedar
Beach club; and re-visited the old Waco pavilions. The churches of the Lakeland area opened their doors this summer as they do each summer to welcome all who entered. Many lakers have a church home in the Lakeland area while others visit several of the churches while visiting here. Many of you golfed the summer away while others enjoyed swimming, soaking up the sunshine, browsing in the area stores, boating skiing, fishing and relaxing in the friendly Lakeland atmosphere. Camps abound in the Lakeland area and many visit here while attending one of the many camps here » Did you drive past Camp Logan, the Tippecanoe Baptist camp. Oakwood Park. Camp Crosely. Camp Alexander Mack, Camp Dick Runyan, Camp Gus Grissom or Smith-Walbridge this summer? They bring additional thousands to the area each year. Many bring their children to camp here and stay to enjoy the area themselves. The senior citizens of the area are not forgotten for there is plenty to do and most have

hobbies that keep them busy from sunrise to sunset in the summer time.
Recreation vehicles have created fun for many during the hot summer months as they have escaped from the daily routine into a world of fun and enjoyment via traveling in campers and trailers. Many visitors to the lakeland area have visited W’awasee and others have stayed on the shores of Papakeechie, Dewart, W’aubee. Tippecanoe. Kuhn, Webster or any one of a number of other lakes located here. Picnics have been summer fun and the Lakeview Spring rest park was a good place to visit for an afternoon of relaxing as was the fish hatchery. At the old hatchery the younger set can enjoy an afternoon of fishing while mom and dad relax. Skiing too is catching on in the Lakeland area. It’s fun and if you haven’t tryed it yet why not plan now to do so on your next visit to the Lakeland area. So 10ng... it’s been a good year at Wawasee . . . and the lake and its friendly people will be here next year waiting for your visit.
At one point during the outing, chief of police Orville VanderReyden smoked, the Indian peace pipe which was later given to the chief's long-time friend, Earl Money. The Chief is a Miami Indian and owns 80 acres of land in Wabash Valley which has never been owned by a white man. In a discussion with the Chief, he admits to being a great-great-grandson to Frances Slocum. His many tales and wit during the afternoon will be long remembered by those in attendance including the original call to council, the bow and arrow, tomahawk and tom-tom displays.

SUMMER'S ALMOST OVER — This boat being pulled in for storage at the Wawasee Marina is proof that summer is almost over. As the city folks leave the lake for school and work their boats are taken from the water and stored until warm weather returns again next spring.

Water Skiing Tips
Water skiing depends on teamwork between the boat driver, the observer and the skier. The following tips, offered by the Evinrude News Service, will help assure safety and fun through teamwork. Hand Signals—Before starting out the skier, observer and driver should compare notes to make sure they understand the six basic water ski hand signals. Stay Alert The driver’s most important job is to remain alert at all times. Many times the skier is busy executing turns or tricks and does not see obstructions or congested areas looming up in front of him. Starting Position —The takeoff is the most important part of the water ski run. The driver should position the boat so that he will be able to follow a straight , course. This will allow the / skier to gain his balance fore having to execute a '- turn. “Hit It’’*- When the skier yells “hit it,” the driver should have the line taut and ready for take-off. Use
enough throttle to make sure the skier is pulled quickly to the surface. Turns—Avoid abrupt maneuvers. When turning, swing wide especially if the skier is on the inside of the turn. Never execute any maneuver that would allow an unreasonable amount of slack in the tow line. Boating Laws —The driver, observer and skier should acquaint themselves with state and local regulations governing water skiing. Many areas have "sunrise to sunset* 1 - rules, which permit skiing only during daylight hours. Congested Areas It’s the driver’s responsibility to avoid congested areas, piers and swimming beaches. It’s also smart to avoid shallow water or weed choked areas. Saturday evening guests of Miss Linda Wickersham of r 1 Leesburg were Misses Roberta and Joyce Terrell, Steve Rutledge and Michael Thompson, all of Winchester and Dennis Miller of r 1 Milford.
Larry Griffith, owner of the marina, is shown operating the crain with assistance from his son, Danny, a senior at Wawasee high school. Wawasee is the only marina on the lake with a crane.
