Conservation Officer Has Busy Summer Days
Realizing that the conservation officers of Indiana are a busy lot this time of the year we asked Earl Money (rs Syracuse about his job and he cheerfully gave us a list <rf typical day's activities. On the day in question he left his house at 8 a m. after receiving a call that a fishing boat was drifting on Wawasee Lake with no one in it. His goal is to check to see if the party has fallen out of the boat or if it came untied during the night. He finds out it was just a drifter so he’starts checking fishing license and inspects boat registrations and life preservers Before too long the state officer starts getting complaints from people about skiers going to close to the piers and beaches. Fishermen give him the same complaint so he tries to check them all, apprehending the boating viola ters and site them
into court. Officer Money also gets complaints of a boat going too fast thru a channel and a radio message of a boat accident on another lake. These both must be checked out. While he's traveling from place to place he has to check sea wall permits where new ones are being built. A well driller's licensees checked and the license of persons having their septic tanks pumped must also be checked. Now comes a call from a marina operator who needs a boat registration application and boating laws so off goes the 8 conservation officer once again on another of his many trips. Next comes a message to deliver to a fisherman or boater to call back to his hometown for an emergency of sickness or death in the family. The day has ended so the conservation officer goes home to eat and rest but that's not in the cards for once in bed he receives a call (rs youngsters who are lost in a boat. Off he goes once again in search and find out they ran out of gas or lost their way home. Home again... in bed again... the telephone rings again .. This time it's a call for help from the Macy Slip area or the Johnsons Bay area where someone ran aground in the swamplands and failed to find the lake. He gets them out and takes them home. Now we'll not go through the home again ... in bed again . . . telephone again . . . routine but the next call is one telling the conservation officer that a deer has been killed on the highway. His job is to remove the deer and dispose of it. The job done ... the sun's coming up... it’s breakfast time and time to start another day of helping people and working for the state conservation department. Thus is the day in the life of a conservation officer... an officer that you might not be able to find right away because he's off on the other side (rs the lake helping someone else. Mrs. Mae Rinker has moved from her residence on Harrison street in Syracuse to a home south of town on r 4.
