NEIGHBORHOOD CAR POOL LAFAYETTE — The neighborhood car pool is a convenient meansof transporting children to school. Convenient, yes; but is it safe? It can be if drivers are responsible and cars are in good condition and equipped with safety devices notably seat belts, says F. R. Willsey. extension safety specialist at Purdue university’. Transport only the number of children for whom you have seat belts. Remember that accidents happen even near home, so insist that every passenger’s seat belt be buckled and fitting properly before starting the engine. If shoulder harnesses are available, be sure to use them for added protection. There will always be children who saythey cannot see when “strapped in.” Pay no attention to such a weak argument. It’s not worth the child’s life. Seat belts not only provide protection, but also help maintain orderliness. And when you are trying to concentrate on driving and watching traffic, active children can be a hazardous distraction.
