Unemployment Follows Seasonal Pattern Many of Indiana’s industries were closed for their usual summer vacation or inventory periods at mid-July, and estimates of the state’s nonfarm employment total then reflected a 23,100 drop from the June level, according to John F. Coppes, director of the Indiana Employment Security Division. He said that the decrease to 1,846,600 from 1,869,700 in June conformed to the usual seasonal pattern. The closing of schools brought nonmanufacturing employment below the June figure, Mr. Coppes said. However, steel mills had more workers in July and nondurable goods industries also reported higher employment. Fewer people were reported as unemployed last month. Mr. Coppes explained that this change occurs annually after the sharp rise in June when vacationing students flood the job markets The extent of the drop, from fabout 123,400 in June to some 106,100 in July, was about the same as in past years, Mr. Coppes said, adding that because the dip was normal, the seasonally adjusted rate of unemployment remained at 4.3 per cent. In July 1969, nonfarm employment was estimated at 1,877,200, unemployment was about 63,900, and the seasonally adjusted rate was 2.6 per cent.
