EIXj-gB THERE’S NOTHING LIKE the smell of Bar-B-Q chicken to get the gang out of the water. Here a junior 4-H leader serves up the crispy golden pieces to members of her 4-H Club. She has learned how to prepare the chicken through participation in the 4-H food-nutrition program which annually attracts around 660,000 girls and boys, reports the Cooperative Extension Service. General Foods Corporation supports this nationwide program.
The Geranium Is Constantly Changing LAFAYETTE - The ever popular geranium is continually changing. Today, we not only have new colors but also the introduction of seed-produced types. These have noticeably changed the geranium industry, says John A. Wott, Purdue University extension home environment horticulturist. Geraniums are usually grown in planters or beds. However, they can also be grown as interesting and attractive novelties, he adds. Tree and pillar geraniums are two such interesting ways; but these require more labor. In a tree geranium the plant is trained to a single stem with leaves and flowers clustered at the top. Since it is singleL stemmed, a sturdy stake must be p used to support the stem which is relatively can occur quite easily if the plant is exposed to winds. s A newer and more practical innovation is the technique used to produce the pillar geranium. In this technique several trunks are allowed to develop along with leaves and flowers from the top to the bottom of the pillar. * Pillar type plants are usually produced more quickly than tree geraniums. Pillar plants are also supported by a stake but are less J subject to breakage because of j the multiple stems. Geraniums grown as a tree or pillar must be taken inside during * the winter, Wott stresses. Individuals with greenhouses or glassed in areas will be able to keep them over winter and enjoy their beauty a second, and perhaps a third season. All geraniums require a sunny location for choice bloom. Avoid excess water and fertilizer which may hinder growth. Overhead watering should always 1 be avoided. Also be sure to remove all faded blooms regularly. 7 ■ Oi MISS Warsaw high school senior Pam Records, 17, is Miss Warsaw 111 in the fair queen contest this year.
