Changes Plea To Guilty In Brazel Theft In April
A Fort Wayne man, Jon Thompson Douglas, 30i Changed nis not guilty plea to guilty when appearing in county court at Warsaw Thursday in connection with the theft of money from Brazel's Bait and/Tackle store at Lake Wawasee in April. arrested by state troopers at the intersection of state road 205-and U. S. 30 near Columbia City within a half-hour after a theft of S6O from the Bait store. Mrs. Kathrine Brazel was managing the store at the time of the incident and told investigating officers a young man entered the place of business while she was waiting on another customer. When the customer left, the young man told her there was a man in the other room with a gun and to go for help. Mrs. Brazel left by the back door but realizing the hoax, immediately returned and notified authorities.
Arrested For Reckless Driving On Portland St. Bobby H. Ratliff. 28. of North Webster was arrested by Syracuse police officer Lawrence Firestone at 9:15 Friday night on Portland street and charged with reckless driving. He appeared in JP court Saturday morning paying a $lO fine and costs totaling $22.25. trict Demonstration Contest Held The Junior Demonstration contest was held July 7 at the Ra Ville high school. Two Milford girls represented Kosciusko county. They were Jane Wilson, who tied for second place and Cindy Rapp. Both are members of the Milford Merry Maidens club.
LIGONIER NEWS By Rose Cunningham Pre-Enrollment Set For Next Week At West Noble West Noble schools will hold pre-enrollment for students Grades 7-12 at Cromwell, August 3; at Wawaka. August 4; and at Ligonier on August 5. Students may enroll from 8 to 12 a m. and 1 to 5 p.m. at any of the schools. Book rental should be paid at this time. Prices are the same as last year. The purpose for pre-enrollment is for students to complete their schedules, pay book rental, and pick up materials and information for the beginning of school. West Noble schools will open on September 1 with a teacher workshop on August 31. District 4-H Demonstration Winners Announced District 4-H demonstration and public speaking contest winners have been announced with Noble county’ having several winners. Miss Cindy Reynolds, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. "William Reynolds, r 1 Ligonier, was the winner of the contest. Cindy Hartman, duaghter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hartman. Ligonier, will be representing Noble county at the state fair, in the clothing category and Darlene Diehm will be going in the breads and pastry category Alternates from the county are Douglas Edwards. Ronell Miller, Peggy McLallin and Rita Lortie. ELAINE BOWERS RECEIVES 6.0 GRADE RECORD Elaine V. Tex. Lieutenant Winnebald is being assigned to Robins AFB. Ga., for duty as a KC-135 Stratotanker aerial refueling aircraft pilot with a unit of the Strategic Air Command. America’s nuclear deterrent force of long range bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles. The lieutenant, a 1965 graduate of Goshen high school, received a B.S. degree in marketing in 1969 from the university of Evansville, where he was commissioned through the air force reserve officers training corps program. Drain, Navy Captain, and former resident of Ligonier, has been awarded the legion of merit by rear admiral Walter V. Combs, commander service force, U. S. Pacific Fleet. Captain Drain received the award “for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance us outstanding service as Chief of Staff and Aide to COMSERVPAC from Februray 1968 to July 1970.” He was instrumental in carrying out the responsibilities of COMSERVPAC in providing logistic support throughout the Pacific Ocean area and in the management of the Service Force organization composed of approximately 100 ships. 24 major activities and 80,000 military and civilian personnel. Captain Drain is a native of Ligonier and a graduate of Ligonier high school. Outstanding participants in the workshop will be recognized at an awards banquet Friday, July 31. ‘Elves And The Shoemaker’ Opens Today At Playhouse “The Elves and the Shoemaker.” the second children’s production, will open Wednesday, July 29 at the Enchanted Hills Playhouse. “The Elves” is a classic fairy tale about, just what the title implies, a poor old shoemaker and a group of elves that try to help him save his shop from the hands of an evil old woman. The play is most suited to entertain children in the elementary school grades, although many adults enjoy the charm color and of children’s theatre. The play will be cast from the apprentice (college students) company at the Playhouse. “Children’s theatre is one of the most enjoyable types of theatre to perform in; the children love you and they are very responsive. It is especially fun at the Playhouse because they present the plays in a sort of ‘audience participation’ style. The children sit with the actors and also are included in the activities of the play.” said Glenn Riggs, a member of the apprentice company from Bloomington. Reservations are not necessary and this play will run Wednesday. Thursday and Friday at 10:30 a m. and Saturday at 10:30 and 2 ■o p.m. Russell Smoots Services were held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Ligonier funeral home, for Russell Smoots, 57, of r - 1 Wawaka. who died Wednesday in Goshen hospital.He had been a patient there for one month, suffering with a heart ailment. Mr. Smoots was bom September 24.1912 in Chenoa, 111., he had resided in the Ligonier and Wawaka area for the past 28 years coming here from Sturgis, Mich. He was employed by Essex W’ire of Ligonier. Survivors include two sons Ronnie, Fort Wayne and James,
Elkhart; three daughters Mrs. Clifford Steward, Fort Wayne, Mrs. Harlan Frick. Leo. and Mrs. Dean Davis, Mount Holly, N. J.; nine grandchildren; and four brothers, Paul of El Paso, 111., Harold, Goshen, Lloyd and Ralph, of Elkhart. His wife, the former Faye Herendeen, died in March. 1969. Rev. Larry H. Wilson officiated at the service and burial was in Oak Park cemetery. COMMUNITY NEWS Mr. and Mrs. Steven Hursey are visiting their parents Mrs. Helen Blue and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hursey. The Ligonier high school graduating class of 1965 held their first class reunion at Woodlawn Park in Ligonier, Sunday afternoon. Miss Harriet Hays, of Westerville, Ohio, has been a house-guest of Miss Eva Cook this week. Thursday evening they were dinner guests of Rev. and Mrs, Uung Sheng Chen, in Kendallville. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Lung of Goshen were dinner guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Kumnick. Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Miller and family have returned from a vacation trip throughout the eastern states. Mr. and Mrs. Yehuda Barch and son, of Morton Grove. 111., visited his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Barch this week. Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Fisel are now residing at the Turtle Creek Convalescent Centre. 1400 W. Franklin, St.. Elkhart. Mrs. Fisel had formerly been a patient in Goshen hospital and was transferred to Elkhart by ambulance. John Bushong On I. U. Dean’s List John Bushong, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Bushong of Waubee Lake, was named to the dean’s list at Indiana university at South Bend for the spring semester. Bushong is a 1967 graduate of Milford high school. To attain the dean’s recognition, a student must finish the semester with 3.5 grade point index on a 4.0 point scale. He must also complete 12 or more credit hours during the semester. Bushong is continuing his studies at the South Bend campus this summer.
