Wawasee Prep Doesn’t Stand Empty During The Summer
While most o parochial and many public 4 schools stand empty during the long, hot summer months Wawasee Prep, on the banks of Lake Wawasee. is a bee-hive of activity as officials utilize the facilities for a 12 month period each year. During the winter months Wawasee Preparatory, formerly Our Lady of the Lake Seminary, is a Catholic college-preparatory school with a program designed to meet the needs of today’s students. It has an emphasis upon a solid education in the humanities, science and social studies with an approach that is thoroughly Christian, up-to-date and highly personal and aims to develop real leaders. A wide program of cocumcular and athletic activities are offered by the school which is operated by the Crosier Order When Summer Comes When summer comes the doors of Wawasee Prep are not locked . . . .they are opened to the public. The Catholic Youtl? Organization (CYO) holds camps each year at Wawasee Prep for the boys and girls of the church. A general sports clinic, golf clinic, basketball clinic and football clinic are open to all boys regardless of religious background Coaches are urged to take advantage of the clinics which are run by professionals. Phil’ Jones, a graduate of Asbury college and Indiana university, is camp director this year. He is overseeing the entire program Johnnie LoPenzia served as instructor for the golf clinic which was held June 28-July 11. He is assistant golf pro at Crooked Creek Country club in Miami. Fla. It’s A Wide, Wonderful Area
And It’s Full Os Lakes
The Lakeland area is a big. Wide. wonderful place whether you live hare all year long, stay here in the summer or are just passing through and it's full of lakes So often we think of the Lakeland area and we think of Lake Wawasee! This is fitting and proper because it is the largest natural lake in the state but there are numerous other lakes dotting the three and onehalf townships that make up the Lakeland area/ There are. "however, so many lakes in Van Buren. Turkey Creek and Tippecanoe townships that each map this reporter looked at showed a different number There are no lakes in Jefferson township The “Biographical and Historical Record of Kosciusko County” which is a collector s item, gives a little information on some of the lakes. It was printed in 1887 Tingle lake in Van Buren township was listed as being romantic and a picturesque retreat while Wawa’s lake was a former part of Indian chief Waw-wa-esse’s reservation Both were reported to abound with fish and wild fowl Since these are the only two lakes in Van Buren township it doesn’t take too long to figure out that Tingle lake has since been re-named Dewart and Wawa’s lake now carries the name of Waubee. Syracuse lake was reported to be one mile long and mile wide It was also reported to lie directly
Plans are underway to improve the summer program which is new for the school. It is, according to school officials, growing gradually. The hope to have it become a very worthwhile program within the next few years with young people from all over the state attending. Important To Area Wawasee Prep with its school program in the winter and its summer programs has become a vital link in the Lakeland area. It draws many visitors to Syracuse and Wawasee each year as students from all over the country come to look at the school and to study there and to attend
east of the. village of the same name. Nine-Mile lake was said to be five miles long and one mile wide. The history of the final township, Tippecanoe. stated numerous lakes and marshes occupied considerable territory and that Tippecanoe lake was the spurce of the river bearing it’s name. In 1914 Using maps of the three townships dating back to 1914 we found a few more of the lakes named. Have you ever heard of the Twin Lakes? Mabie Lake? Plew Lake’’ Two Kuhn Lakes” Hammond Lake? We noted Papakeechie was Pappakeechie! Tippecanoe and James or Little Tippy were combined into one lake by the name of Tippecanoe. The Twin Lakes have since been changed to Allen and Rothenberger. The most interesting is the Barbee Chain. That’s where someone really got happy when it came to changing names. Mabie Lake is now Sawmill. Plew is Sechrist. Kuhn is Little Barbee. Hammond is Big Barbee. Only the second Kuhn Lake remains the same. Wawasee , The history of Wawasee lake is an interesting one with the lake being called Turkey and NineMile during the good old days. When the lake began to attract summer visitors and a more romantic name was sought the lake was named after the great Indian chief who had ruled the tribes in this area on his reservation years before. The Standard Atlas, our 1914 source, showed Waubee and Dewart in Van Buren township. Boner. Syracuse, Wawasee, Papakeechie. Hammond. Twin lakes. Spear and Shock in Turkey Creek township and Tippecanoe. Webster. Shoe. Irish. Mabie. Plew, the two Kuhn. Hammond. Heron and part of Ridinger's were listed in Tippecanoe township. Our map of 1967 showed the same two lakes in Van Buren township with several new lakes listed in the other two townships. Have you eve- heard of Barrel-and-a-half lake? Or what about Price? Grindle? Long? Wyland” Morehead” Black? Backwater’ Snoke? Greeder? Kiser? Pisgah? Durham? or. Banning? This author will admit many of them are very small but all are listed on the map and all join to make the Lakeland area one of the best vacation lands in Indiana Lake all of northern Indiana these lakes once belonged to the Indian, then the white man came and settled in the area and the Indian was sent to a reservation and later moved farther west The whiteman came in search of riches in the form of farm land and wild animals and found them

the camps that are held there. The facilities of the school are open to students and potential students and their families each summer. They stay in the dorms and enjoy the water front facilities of the school and visit and shop in area stores. For several years now • the Wawasee Arts Foundation, which has taken over the Enchanted Hills Playhouse, has used one of the school’s dormitory halls to house its personnel. Truly, Wawasee Prep has opened its doors during the summer months to the Catholic and non-Catholic alike as it draws people to the Lakeland area from all over.
in the Lakeland area. He settled on the banks of the larger lakes and laid claim to the smaller ones. Like Wawasee. most of the lakes in this area are nowsurrounded by year-round homes and summer cottages and are a bee-hive of activity as people take advantage of » the manyadvantages lake living offers Papakeechie Papakeechie lake, according to Eli Lilly’s book “Early Wawasee Days," was named after one of the most influential Miami chiefs in the region. “Before 1910,” says the book, “when the earth day forming Lake Papakeechie was built, six small lakes or ponds, surrounded by marshland, lay in the depression now filled and made so beautiful by that sparkling body of water surrounded by its templed hills. The names of these small lakes were Jarrett’s, Gan’s Hopper’s, and the three called Hartzell’s.” The book continues, “The man who built the dam and created this beautiful little lake, and was also largely responsible for building the little Episcopal church on the south shore of Lake Wawasee, was Charles A. Sudlow. of Indianapolis, who had been born in Surrey. England, coming to the United States at the age of 19. Mr. Sudlow was in the insurance and real estate business in Indianapolis. About 1890 he had purchased the old Markey farmhouse, one of the few near the Lake, from Uncle John Vawter. He remodeled it into a most picturesque, low. rambling cottage. It is nowowned by James B. Kirkwood “Unfortunately, Mr. Sudlow did not live to see his lake become surrounded by the many pleasant summer places eventually built there, for at that time there were still many locations available on the big lake, and his beautiful development was quite primitive when *he took up his new work.’ "His grandson. John Sudlow. is the prominent and helpful contractor and friend of many cottagers around the lakes.” RETURN FROM WESTERN TRIP Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Fox have returned from a trip through the western states. Places of interest they enjoyed were the Royal Gorge. Garden of the God’s, the dfrive up Pike’s Peak and the eruption of “Old Faithful” at Yellowstone National Park. They visited Mr and Mrs Victor Seidell in Lincoln. Neb., and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rhodes in Moscow, Idaho, who were armv friends of the Fox's during World War 11. In Rocky Ford. Col., they visited Mr. and Mrs. Robert Newcomer and family, who is a brother of Mrs. Delbert Money- heffer

Basic Rules Aid Boatmen
Detailed boating regulations that may differ from one part of the country to the next may be confusing to boatmen. But a little common sense in boating and a knowledge of the fundamental rules of the road can be applied almost everywhere. The basic rule to remember is that a vessel approaching you from any point dead ahead to within a ninety degree angle coming from the right has the right of way. Steer to Right When two boats approach head on, each should steer to the right or starboard side. When one boat is overtaking another, he must keep clear of the slower moving boat which has the right of way. Boats leaving the dock have no right of way until they are in open water.

The vessel having the right of way is called “privileged” but has the obligation to maintain course and speed. The vessel not having the right of way is “burdened” and must take necessary action to avoid the possibility of collision by turning, slowing, stopping or reversing. Sailboats Privileged Sailboats are always privileged ovgr motorboats except in a rare situation when they are overtaking boats under power. Fishing boats, whether anchored or underway, have the right of way. A good rule to remember when approaching larger vessels such as freighters is that they have the right of way though you may technically be privileged. In any emergency, it is the duty of the boatman to stand by and render all possible assistance. Common sense and boating courtesy should prevail in all situations.
Moore is heading up the prep’s football camp this year. A total of 21 boys are attending the camp which is a first for the prep school this summer.
