•:• ,' facts about $ ‘OUR TOWN’ Milford, Ind. *\ss>ssss;w>>s>s>sss : >:<->>:<4i<<<w By JERI SEELY \ Milford Day must have been quite an affair in Our Town way back when. Our photo of the week was taken on one of the many Milford Days and carries the date September 2, 1909. In progress at the time was a motorcycle race. They started three miles out on old state road 15 south of Milford and ended “ the race somewhere north of town according to our information. • • • The following it-a clipping from the MichiitaurCity paper and was brought to us by Mrs. Bill Coy „and her mother-in-law. Mrs. Roscoe Coy. both of that Indiana town The Coys have summer cottages on Waubee lake and are quite well known in the area. The younger Co\s have a son stationed in Iceland and think he is one of the navy men. who put Mrs Ross up to writing the letter. It follows: “Chamber of Commerce: ’We arc stationed.; at # Keflanik naval station. Iceland, and there are several men from Indiana here. We would all appreciate receiving a recipe for sugar cream pie. 1 have researched my cookbooks and cannot locate a recipe. All of the Hoosier boys are’ awaiting your reply. Shirley D. Ross. IDF, Box 1. FPO New York, N. Y„ MS7F ... anyone have such a recipe?” Well, does anyone have the recipe? If so why not send it to Iceland and make a number of Hoosier navymen happy.

Do you know what SPC stands for? I do. or thought I did until Monday. Now I have some research to do to see if I can find out who is right! Some have called to say SPC is for Sandusky-Portland Cement Company while others say it's Syracuse-Portland Cement Company. We do thank everyone who called or wrote! I even learned that my grandfather, the late John H. Bushong of Our Town, was a night watchman on the barge at Waubee Lake while his brother, the late Charles Bushong of Syracuse, was the manager of the same barge. The SPC was a leading local industry from the late 19th century until about 1920. according to information sent to us by Wiley W. (Bill* Spurgeon, Jr., of r 1 Syracuse. The principal product of the firm was portland cement, which was made best with marl as one of its principal ingredients. To get the marl to make the cement, Mr. Spurgeon's letter states, dredges were operated on marl-bottom lakes in the area such as Wawasee and Waubee. Resentment of local property; owners, who protested to the use of a state lake for private enterprise, ran the dredges off of Wawasee in the 'teens.

The SPC plant (and It was huge) was located at the east end of Medusa street, on both sides of the B and O railroad along Syracuse Lake. Ruins of the plant can still be seen there. Most of the plant had been dismantled when a fire ravaged the ruins about 1924. To get the marl from the lakes to the plant, a standard-guage railroad ran due south from the SPC plant to "The Slip,” now Macy's Wawasee Slip, and then due west to Waubee lake. The railroad grade can still be seen just west of old Indiana 13 opposite the entrance to Oakwood Park, and also just west of Old Indiana 13 owx>site the Turtle Bay trailer park. Buildings at the Slip bear a marked and understandable resemblance to buildings between Wawasee and Waubee on the old right-of-way-drive about a mile south of the Syracuse-Milford road on the road just east of the Leland pit to see. SPC can be credited for the unusual name of Medusa street in Syracuse. Medusa was the Greek Goddess with snakes for hair (or in her hair) and if you looked at her. you turned to stone. What better tradename for cement! There are still ' some portland cement firms with Medusa in their names. SPC may also be credited with making Wawasee the lake it is today, says Mr. 'Spurgeon’s letter. Wawasee was traditionally
a very shallow lake, and to make it possible to operate the dredges, it was necessary to raise the lake level, so they could maneuver the whole lake. * • Deborah Sue May, 21-year-old, blue-eyed blonde ’ from Remington, is the new Miss Indiana. She is well known by many residents of Our Town. Debbie won her title in Michigan City last Saturday night. She entered the contest as Miss Indianapolis.
