facts about $ ‘OUR TOWN’ Milford, Ind. "v By JERI SEELY .Another activity of Milford Day was a baseball game at the park. The above photo shows a large number of people who turned out for the game play* ed in September of 1910. • * * One does read the strangest things; An aged man in Wales says he can tell if it’s going to rain by the May the'bubbles rise when he drops a lump of sugar into his mornin:: coffee. If the bubbles collect in the middle.

he says a fine day will follow. If they form a ring around the edge of the cup, there'll be rain, sure as shootin’. So many funny things have been heard and read about men and their Bermuda shorts and other garments or lack of garments supposed to help them endure the scorching hot weather we have been having. / 1 • Some incautious persons in Chicago suggested that the city policemen wear shorts and shortsleeved shirts, but the policemen themselves "shot down" on that idea right away. They said, and quite truly, that it would make them the subject of jokes, and an officer of the law should not be garbed in away to lower his dignity. Then too. they 'said, their summer uniforms are made of lightweight material and are not uncomfortable. It is well remembered that when Catherine street was paved—and some of the weather at that time was blistering—the men wore hats or caps?and shirts with long sleeves, why? To protect themselves against the hot rays of the sun. ♦ • • A starred looking man driving a caf. says as he watches a group of teen-agers tearing along at break : neck speed. "I always watch out for school children especially if they’re driving a car.” • • • When I was quite a little girl. I thought it was rather silly for Milfkrd to have streets named Henri and James. Emetine'and Catherine. Heaven only knows
what I might have named them when I was indulging in severe Maybe Emeline and have been changed to Daisy and Pearl, names of my favorite dolls! It was carefully explained to me that these four streets were named after .the children of judge Aaron Perrine, the man who laid out - the town of Milford. Well, that made it a little better, but I still didn’t admire judge Perrine's choice of names for struts. But if one of the boys had been named Broadway — Now I think it’s quite alright, and I have no reluctance whatever about telling people I live on Henry street, actually the southwest corner of Henry and Catherine streets. To be exact, lot 1. block 5. Incidentally. Milford should always be grateful to judge Aaron Perrine for making our Main street as wide as it is. Not many small towns have as wide a Main street. „ • • • Have you figured the column out yet? Really, I haven’t flipped! The articles, except for the first paragraphs on this week’s old picture, are copied from News and Views by MLM in the August and September issues of the 1955 Milford Mail. The next time I have a cup of tea I must remember to watch the bubbles. Maybe I’ll find a foolproof way of telling the weather! As for the Bermuda shorts, I can't help but wonder what our former editor would think of the dress today. Or, should I have said undress! Most of our readers know the

four streets mentioned in the final article, but for those who are new to the community 'and haven't, notice James and Henry are north and. south streets while Emeline and Catherine run east and west. All are just off the business block. The Bruce McClintic family resides in the residence referred to by MLM as her home. ♦ • • Big things are happening in Lebanon and Albany, Oreg., according to Harry and Dorothy Funk, former Milford residents who have lived in Lebanon for many years. Mrs. Funk has sent us a special "Strawberry Festival” issue of the Lebanon Express and of the “Timber Carnival” issue of the Albany paper, she hopes would be of interest to some of their “long ago” neighbors. ■ V She writes they are both in fair health and that nice, cool weather <6B-72 degrees' prevailing in the area in which they live. She gives their address as 450 West Sherman, Lebanon, Oreg., 97355. Howard Locke Attending NSFSI At Ball State U.
