Flotilla Street Parade A Success, Dance And Water Parade Canceled
The annual parade for the Father’s Day Flotilla week end was deemed a success Friday night with over 55 participants in the event followed by local beauty, Marcia Peffley, being crowned Queen of the Flotilla in a judging held at Wawasee high school Over 300 persons were on hand for the Flotilla ball Saturday night at the Smith-Walbridge camp, including Senator Vance Hartke, but money had to be refunded when the band did not show. The Sunday lake parade was cancelled when committee members were advised by conservation officers that the lake was unsafe for most crafts and Sunday. June 28. was set for the annual event. The week of activities for the affair this year was sponsored for the first time by local Jaycees and Jayshees and all members worked diligently for the event to be a success No reason has bee received to date as to why the band did not make an appearance It is not known at this time whether Senator Hartke and Congressman John D Brademas will be in attendance for the Sunday parade to serve as

Susie Smith was selected by a vote by the 17 contestants as Miss Congeniality and presented, for the first time this year, a trophy and a floating tiera by Top Pop Carroll Lee Koble. In addition to a trophy, the queen received a SI,OOO scholarship for furthering her education this fall. The scholarship was new this year and made possible by donations from local merchants and sponsors in addition to the Jaycees and Jayshees Master of ceremonies was Chic Lantz Karen Allen presided at the piano with Chuck Murray and Barry Davis in charge of lighting. Miss Jayne of the Village Flower Shop was in charge of scenery. Judges were Karen Strueh, Jo Ann Mosbaugh. Larry Jones. Dave Andrews and Norm Haag Other Events A chicken barbecue was held at the Lakeland Youth Center from noon until 5 p.m. sponsored by the Goshen Jaycees. Winners in the fishing contest ending Saturday and being recorded and weighed at the Sportsman's Center south of Syracuse were: Harland Ditmors, Goshen, large mouth bass; Jim LeCount, Goshen.

A floating trophy was {resented in the golf tournament held at all three local golf courses in week end play with low gross of 73 at South Shore fired by John Hulley of Syracuse and Steve Lambert of West Lafayette recording a 72 at Wawasee Golf club to win the trophy and a SIOO savings bwid Merl Smith of Syracuse posted a 79 at Maxwelton. Chairman Steve Solina presented the flotaing Flotilla trophy to Wawasee Golf club proowner, Don Byrd. The Sunday parade schedule will be the same as planned with assembling at Macy’s Slip prior to starting at one o'clock. Steve Butt is chairman. LAKELAND LOCAL Mrs. Harriet Brenner of r 3 Syracuse will observe her 86th birthday Saturday. July 4. Carol Meroney And Paul Frederick Exchange Marriage Vows June 14
Carol Kay Meroney and Paul Frederick Kehr exchanged marriage vows Sunday. June 14, at the Centenary United Methodist church. Ligonier, at 2:30 p.m. Rev. Walter House officiated at the ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and. Mrs. Robert Meroney, Ligonier, and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jess Kehr of Fort Wayne. The double ring vows were solemnized before an altar banked with white flowers and candelabra and pews were marked with white satin bows. Mrs. Gary Peterson presided at the organ. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of white satopeau and rochelle lace. The lace appliqued empire bodice was fashioned with an oval neckline and long bishop sleeves. The lace appliqued A-line skirt with bow topped watteau back fullness, swept into a scalloped lace edged chapel length train. Her elbow length laced veil of bridal illusion fell from a headpiece of leaves and pearls. She carried a styled handbouqet of pink sweetheart roses and stephanotis with white satin streamers. An aqua rose with a tear drop and bouffant veil completed their ensembles and they carried styled hand bouquets of white and aqua tipped carnations and daisy poms. Calvin Kehr, brother of the bridegroom, served as best man and Randy Erb of West Lafayette, served as groomsman. Ushers were Dave Stubbins of Fort Wayne and Ed Spartz of Kalamazoo, Mich. The bride’s mother wore a dress of pink with white accessories and the bridegroom s mother was attired in blue with blue accessories. Both wore corsages of white carnations and pink sweetheart roses. Immediately after the ceremony a reception was held in the church social rooms. Serving were Mrs. Randy Erb, West Lafayette; Miss Pam Havlin,
Fort Wayne; Mrs. Bruce Owen, Pendleton; and Mrs Steve Shumaker, Kendallville. The guest registrar was Mrs. Lanny Meroney, sister-in-law of the bride. After a wedding trip to the Smoky Mountains the couple will reside at 135-13 Nimitz Drive, West Lafayette. The bride is a graduate of Ligonier high school and CaylorNickel clinic school of certified laboratory assistants. Bluffton. Tlie bridegroom graduated from North Side high school. Fort Wayne and from the Purdue university school of pharmacy. Awards of Gold Presented At OES Meeting Saturday Awards of Gold were presented to two 50-year members of the Ligonier Masonic Lodge Saturday evening at the Masonic Temple in this city. Past Grand Master, J. Carl Humphery, of Muncie, presented the gold pins to Otto Schrock retired florist, and Cecil Griffith, retired pharmacist, long-time residents of the community. Dr. Olin Bailey was also honored but will receive his pin at a later date. About 100 members and guests enjoyed the carry-’n dinner and open meeting. Entertainment was by the Jubileers. singing group from Syracuse and Ligonier.

John Atz Heads Ligonier Rotary John Atz has been elected president of the Ligonier Rotary club. Serving with him will be Tom Conner, vice president; James Schrock, secretary and Fitz Turner, treasurer. Dr. Robert is the retiring president. Rotarians entertained their Rotary Anns at a dinner meeting at Club 30. Columbia City, Monday evening. A new schedule for meetings has been adopted by the group. Meetings this summer will be breakfast at 7:30 a.m. instead of the usual evening dinner. 1 Bessie (Hite) Smith Services were conducted in the Ligonier funeral home Sunday at 2:30 p.m. for Mrs. Bessie (Hite) Smith, 80. Mrs. Smith died in Lucky nursing home. Wolf Lake, on June 19. She had been a patient there for the past three months and ill for eight months. She was bom in Ligonier on August 2.1890 and resided in the area her entire lifetirhe. She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist church. Her first husband. J. C. Hite, died in 1950 and she later married Dr. George Smith, also of Ligonier. He died in 1958. Survivors include one son Harold Hite of Kendallville; a daughter. Mrs. Wayland Rose of Wawaka; two grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. Rev. Walter House was in charge of the services and burial was in Oak Park cemetery. Bertha L. Burdett Mrs. Bertha L. Burdett. 83. of r r Albion, died in Goshen hospital on June 19. Services were held Sunday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home at Ligonier with Rev. DeVon Stump officiating. Mrs. Burdett had Jived the past 10 years in the area and formerly resided in West Virginia. Survivors include three sons and three daughters — Clayton, Elkhart; Donald, West Virginia; Harry, Cleveland. Ohio; Mrs. Margaret Odell and Mrs. Tressie Motor, both of West Virginia and Mrs. Ruth Dunbar of Ligonier. Also surviving are one sister, 30 grandchildren and 20 greatgrandchildren. FIRE AND FIRST AID CALLS LISTED Firemen and the first aid unit responded to a call at 3 a m. June 17 when fire broke out in a truck owned by Comfo Sleep Corp., being driven by Fenton Summerlot on state road 13 at the south limits of town. Minor was given for the fire believed to have started from driving with the emergency brake on. A total of seven persons were taken to Goshen hospital Friday night when a Volkswagen convertible being driven by Jerry Dahm rolled into a pond on road 8 ’ at the former fish hatchery location. Lake Wawasee. The seven persons were all occupants of the small car which was completely demolished.
