■ > The Queen of Lakes will soon have a companion — The King of Sports’ By this time in 1972 if all goes as planned the town of North Webster will have a new look — it will be to the theme of the King of Sports. Plans are currently underway to give the town a face lifting that will bring even more visitors to the community and give a more festive appearance to the annual Mermaid Festival as well as a companion — The King of Sports —for the Queen of Lakes. The new look will carry out the medieval theme and is being sponsored by the local merchants. Said theme was picked to blend in with the 25-year-old Mermaid Festival Queen of Lakes contest. It is hoped a King of Sports award can be presented annually. The Farmers State Bank, backers of the plan, will build a central theme in the form of a fountain. The King of Sports fountain will be glass enclosed and will be located just east of the present bank building. The bank is also underwriting the design costs with 18 stores currently planning to remodel and more being added to the list all the time. Bank president Homer Shoop is working diligently on the project which will have as its focal point both summer and winter sports. Richard Shipley has finished preliminary sketches of each business front. The new fronts will give the town an atmosphere of the old World with the sketches seen by this reporter showing turrets, canopies, shields and other decorations which will help add to the festivities of the summer. Kip Sullivan is building consultant. Some of the projects are scheduled for completion yet this summer. All should be ready by this time in 1972 and the Queen of Lakes will have a King of Sports.
