25th MERMAID FESTIVAL

Now In Progress, Parade Saturday

THE 25TH ANNUAL NORTH WEBSTER LIONS CLUB MERMAID FESTIVAL IS IN FULL SWING IN THAT LAKELAND TOWN WITH THE FINISHING TOUCHES OF THE SILVER ANNIVERSARY FESTIVAL BEING PLANNED FOR SATURDAY. The gigantic two-hour parade is set for 4 p.m. with Republican Congressional candidate Don Newman as parade marshal. The line of march is down state highway 13 through the heart of the small Lakeland community which opens its doors each year to the more than 100.000 persons who visit “America’s Largest Small Town Fete.’’ The parade is one of the biggest and prettiest in the state. It runs two hours or longer and each year more units are on hand to the delight of the large crowd that lines the streets to view the spectacle. Trophies are given for the best school bands, best decorated convertible and floats, best walking unit, oldest car. color guard, best mounted unit and best cutie conveyance. Winners will be announced at 7 p.m. on the fair grounds and trophies presented at that time. One of the biggest highlites of the parade is the arrival of the “Queen of Lakes" at the reviewing stand. This vear 1969 queen Peggy Hughes of Syracuse will be on hand for the parade and the crowning of a new queen later in the evening. The Queen of Lakes pageant finals will be in the North Webster junior high school gym at 8 p.m. Miss Indiana. Jill Jackson, will perform during the pageant. Members of queen Peggy's court are Marta Juday, Miss Texaco; Ginger Shipley, Miss North Webster; Marilvn Elev. Miss Argos Lions Club; Rebecca Kellogg, Miss Eastbrook; Joyce Cripe. Miss Ligonier; and Jan Rocque. Miss North Webster Ski-Bees. Miss Juday. a resident of Syracuse won the Miss Congeniality honors and Miss Shipley, now Mrs. Max Beer of Milford, won the swim suit honors in 1969. Competition for the 1970 Queen of Lakes title began at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday when an informal reception was held at a*North Webster restaurant. The public is not invited to the reception which gives judges a chance to meet the girls and talk with them informally. The Queen of Lakes hopefulls appear before the public for the first time at 8 p.m. on Friday when the swim suit competition will be held in the school gym. A new Miss Swim Suit will be crowned at the close of the evening. The final judging will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday in the gym. The new queen will be crowned, her court named and a new Miss Congeniality will be selected. Kid’s Tonight! Tonight is the night that is annually turned over to the younger set! It’s Kids' Night! The Cutie parade will be held at 7 on the town's Main street with the Cutie King and Queen contest following at 7:30 p.m. The parade will be from the stop light on state road 13 to the school building. The contest is for boys and girls from four to six and z will be held in the gym. As usual the festival program is a full one. Events began last Friday night with the Mermaid Ball at the Tippy Gardens and will run until a new queen is crowned on Saturday night. The merchants featured specials on Saturday and a horse shoe pitch contest proceeded the chicken barbecue. Sunday a new event, snowmobile drag races, were held and the waterball contest provided excitement for all. SSO Damage To Sign At Milford Texaco Station Police officers estimated SSO in damages to a sign at the Berkeypile Texaco station on state road 15 in Milford. The sign was struck by a vehicle operated by Cora L. Watson. 38, Warsaw at 3 25 a m. Friday. The Warsaw woman was driving down the highway when her car crossed the center line and struck the sign on the driveway at the station. Damages of $750 were estimated to the car owned by Marshal Turner of Warsaw. The Watson woman was arrected by Milford chief of police Don Drake and deputysheriff Ron Robinson for driving under the influence of intoxicating beverages and riving left of the center.

Queen Murcia Prepares

For Flotilla Parade

Queen Marcia was prepared for the lake parade on Lake Wawasee Sunday, in spite of inclement weather, but to no avail. The annual Father’s Day Flotilla was postponed until Sunday, June 28. after the committee in charge was advised the lake was unsafe for most crafts. Marcia. 18-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Peffley of Syracuse Lake, was crowned Flotilla Queen Friday night at Wawasee high school by 1969 Queen Carla Singrey. She was selected over 16 other lovely beauties in the contest. Runner-up for two years in a row, the third time was the charm for Marcia. A 1970 graduate of Wawasae high school, she majored in art. home economics. English, social studies- and business. Queen Marcia was a cheerleader. member of GAA, art club, drama and debate club. Block ”W”, gymnastics, the YTeens in her junior year and FFA sweetheart in both her junior and senior years. She enjoys water sports and bowling and is presently employed at Tom Socks in the Village. The SI,OOO scholarship, given for the first time this year, will be used this fall when entering Indiana university where she will be majoring in art. Marcia is also entered in the Mermaid Festival contest at North Webster. Syracuse Police And Firemen’s Fair Scheduled For July 6-11

Plans are being announced for the 11th annual police and firemen's fair to be held July 6 through 11 one block west of state road 13 south of Syracuse in Wawasee Village. 36 Beauties Vie In Festival 'Queen Os Lakes' Contest There are many beautiful girls in this year’s Queen of Lakes beauty pageant, .all hoping to become the 25th queen on Saturday night. The Queen of Lakes title is currently held by Miss Peggy Hughes of Syracuse. The girls attended a preliminary judging reception at a North Webster restaurant last evening at ’6:30 p.m. They will meet again on Friday when the .swim suit, competition will be held in the gym'at 8 p.m. The finals are at 8 p.m. on Saturday. The public’s first look at the contestants will be Fr iday at the swim suit competition. A Miss Swim Suit will be named at that time. Miss Hughes will reign over the activities and will relinquish her crown Saturday.
