Oswego Baptist Church Honors 25-Year Members

1 The Oswego Baptist church honored the members of 25 years and over Sunday. June 7. The recognition service Sunday morning was followed by a dinner. The church was organized in 1839 and is a part of the American Baptist Convention, formerly known as the Northern Baptist FORMER RESIDENTS CELEBRATE SILVER ANNIVERSARY Mr and Mrs Roger McConnell attended open house Sunday at the home of Mr and Mrs. John Stookey of East Kercher Road in Goshen tn celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary Mrs Stookey is the former Pat McConnell Mr Stookey s parents are Mr and Mrs Fred Stookey. Convention Nettie Teeple was honored as, the member of longest service, 69 years and George Hartman for 65 years service. Others over 50 years are Bernice Arbruster. Mabie Lippencott, Ann Hansman. Maude Hartman, Leora Stookey and Beulah Kehr Each received a leather bound Bible engraved in gold, a framed Stump. Mrs. Terry Mauzy. Mrs. Al Engleberth and Mrs Wayne Randal — grades four, five and six, Mrs Wilber Gross and Mrs John Randall — young teens. Mrs. Merl Harris is the director Mrs Lee Tusing is in charge of music, and Mrs. Gene Bryant has charge of the refreshments. There will be a picnic this Saturday at 10 a m for the boys and girls who attended the Bible School, to be held at the church. certificate of appreciation and flowers. Those of 25 to 50 years service are Mr. and Mrs. William Metcalf, Zoa Metcalf. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ryan. Ira Shue, Millie Engle and Mildred Klopenstein. The interim pastor Rev. Robert Chidrster presided at the service, assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Neibert and Alma Freeman. from the state of Oregon. This was under the sponsorship of the Holstein-Friesian Association of America TO PARTICIPATE IN OPENING SERVICE SUNDAY The Leesburg United Methodist church choir will participate in the opening service of “Worship In the Round" along with all the other choirs who are affiliated with Worship in the Round. Rev. David Palmer of the First Presbyterian church is the director. The service starts this Sunday morning at 7:45 a.m. til 8:30 a.m. Robert Bishop is directing the Leesburg choir in the absence of Mrs Maxine Robinson. LEESBURG OES HAS INITIATION The regular June 23 meeting of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 287. will go by default as members meet in Milford at the Masonic Temple for inspection. At the June 9 meeting there were around 40 members present. Dewey Dye and Mrs. Larry Polk were initiated into Star. The refreshment table was

decorated with packages of flower seed and given to each father. Eva Brunner and Mrs. Fred Stookey served refreshments of cake, ice cream, ice tea and coffee. BATTALION CAMP OUT HELD OVER WEED END There was a battailion campout held Friday night and Saturday for boys of the Leesburg Brethren church. They enjoyed swimming, playing miniature golf and riding the amusements at North Webster. Howard Immel was the leader. Those who enjoyed the outing were Jerry Hamilton, GaryHamilton, Gary and Tim George, Steve Johnson, Steve and Doug Stauffer. MEN’S BREAKFAST SET FOR SUNDAY This Sunday morning the Leesburg United Methodist church will hold a men's breakfast at 8:30 a m. in the fellowship hall. The Mason's will be guest and observe the feast of St. John the Baptist. CLASSES BEGIN AT LEESBURG CHURCH MONDAY Next Monday June 22 two classes will begin at the Leesburg United Methodist church. The membera.iip class for the junior high age group will meet at 9. The Bible Study class for children from grade one thru grade six will start at 10:00 to 11:30. The membership class will assist with the Bible Study class. Rev. David Gosser is the director. Mary Magdalene Circle Meets At Ryan Home The Oswego First Baptist church. Mary Magdalene Circle, met last Wednesday evening with Mrs. Carl Ryan. The meeting was opened with devotions “Ye Are the Salt of Earth" by Mrs. Ryan. The business meeting was conducted by the circle leader Mrs. Douglas Metcalf. They discussed their rummage sale to be held July 1- 4 at the George Dickerson building in Oswego. Donations of furniture and clothing are still being taken. The new emphasis of circle of concerns will be initiated this summer. The program was given by Mrs. Keith Felton entitled “One Person Does Matter" in the form of a film on the work of the white cross. There were refreshments served to the seven members present. Calvary Church of Oswego In Final Week Os Its Bible School The Calvary Baptist church of Oswego is in its final week of Bible School with the average attendance last week of 102. The closing program will be held this Sunday evening at 7 p.m. The program will include a musical package and each department will participate. After the program the parents are invited to look at the different projects the boys and girls made. There will be punch served Everyone is welcome. Bushong-Kirkendall Reunion Held Sunday The 56th Bushong — Kirkendall reunion was held Sunday in the Junior Coy’s home of" North Webster. There were 85 present. The new officers are as follows: Paul Bushong, president; Jerry Bushong, vicepresident; Mrs. Esta Yocum, secretary and treasurer; Mrs. Harry Gillis, assistant secretary treasurer. The pony league played Warsaw last Wednesday, the score was Warsaw 11 and Leesburg 2. During Friday evening action of the regular little league teams, team one beat team five, 18 to 3 and team two beat team three. Entertained At Rehearsal Dinner A rehearsal dinner was held for Patty Smaltz and Thomas Hoffert at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Smaltz on Saturday. June 6. There were 23 at the dinner. Patty and Tom were married on Sunday. June 7. REV. GOSSER ON TELEVISION Rev. David Gosser of the United Methodist church was on Homemakers Time Tuesday morning. He visited in the kitchen and made a couple of sandwich recipes. He later visited in the living room and told about the Worship In the Round that begins this Sunday. Redeemer Lutheran . Children’s Choir Picnic At Tippy On Saturday The Redeemer Lutheran church of Warsaw had its children’s choir picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Maynard at Tippy Lake on Saturday, June 13. There were 17 children present along with Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Timmons. Mrs. Donna Brelsford, Mrs. Helen Wallace and Mrs. Carolyn Abernathy. Games were played and boat rides were enjoyed. Prizes were won by Mark Wallace, Mike Wallace, Julie Abernathy, Peter Abernathy. Margaret Brown, and Rose Stroh of W’arsaw; and Susan Heierman of Leesburg. Discussion Class Hks Picnic The discussion class of the United Methodist church had a picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Anglin on Tippy lake Sunday. Everyone enjoyed boating, skiing, and swimming. GIRLS’ SOFTBALL TEAM BEGINS PLAY FRIDAY, JUNE 12 The Leesburg girls softball team began play on Friday, June 12. The score of the first game was 17 to 15. 4-H CLUBS HAVE SKATING PARTY The Leesburg Plain Farmerettes and Successful Farmers held a roller skating party last Tuesday evening at Columbia City. At the regular 4-H meeting of the Farmerettes held at the Leesburg school cafeteria on June 9 at 1:30, the pledge to the American flag was given by Holly Strong and Tammie Klopenstein gave the pledge to the 4-H flag. Devotions were in the charge of Tammie Klopenstein on imagination. The business meeting was conducted by the president, Pam Kuhn. The discussion on the penny pitch to be during Leesburg days was held and on August 18 they will be going to Franke Park in Fort Wayne. The girls have to complete their fair project before they can go. They also discussed achievement day which will be held in July at the Leesburg cafeteria. Demonstrations were given by Bunni Beatty on Five Cup salad and Karen Mosier on apple crumb pie. Attend Sing Out At North Webster Amy and Dirk Ferverada and Kathy Smoker attended the SingOut camp at Camp Croslev at North Webster last Monday thru Wednesday. A program was presented to the parents on Wednesday night. BUDGET MEETING HELD MONDAY The town board member? met Monday evening at the Town Hall to prepare the budget for the coming year. A meeting was held after the meal to complete the planned PTO program for the coming year at the Leesburg school. Mrs. Goldie Sanderson and Mrs. Bernice Watkins visited on Sunday evening with Mrs. Nellie Randall of Warsaw. Mrs. Lucy Hummel and Marvin and Mr. and Mrs. Max Miller attended the Starner reunion at the Pattermill Sunday. Mrs. David Pulver of Woodburn and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kammerer and family were Saturday dinner guests of the Andrew Kammerers to help Mrs. Kammerer celebrate her birthday. William Nay was dismissed on Friday from the Murphy Medical Center. He will be going back to the center in about two weeks for further surgery. Mr. and Mrs. James Baird of Fowlerton called on Mr. and Mrs. Robert Davis Sunday evening. Frank Stephens was admitted to Murphy Medical Center last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Kammerer were lunch guests Monday of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Klopenstein and daughters. This was to celebrate the birthday of Mrs. Kammerer and the wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Kammerer. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Brubaker, Rog, Elizabeth and Robert, Winnetka. 111., spent the week end with the Ralph Brubakers. Bruce Smith had surgery last Thursday at Parkview hospital in Fort Wayne. Bruce is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Smith. Major Roger E. Brockhoff flew to Griffin air force base and recently spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Brockhoff. He has had several visitors since returning home. He celebrated his birthday Sunday. Mrs. Lucy Hummel and Marvin visited Mrs. Rilla Boyer of Fort Wayne last Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Robert Davis was dismissed from Whitley County hospital last Friday. She was there for treatment and X-rays. Mr. and Mrs. Bud Landis, Phil and Janet attended the wedding of their niece, Mary Jo Bryant, to Gary Dixon at North Manchester. Mr. and Mrs. LaVon Heckaman and family attended a go-ing-away party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Heckaman for Jeff Heckaman, who will leave for basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. Robison recently attended the graduation of their granddaughter, Dinah Arthur, daughter of the Gene Arthurs. Mrs. Arthur is the former Sue Robison of Oswego. Dinah was an honor student and a member of the National Honor Society. Mrs. Ken Schernekau is a patient in the Goshen hospital. She expects to return home soon. The Schernekaus are the new owner? of the Oswego Supermarket. Keith Felton is a patient in the Whitley County hospital where he was admitted Saturday for tests. Sam and Dinah Arthur spent several days with their grandparents. the G. F. Robisons, and grandmother, Mrs. LaVon Arthur of North Manchester. Sam will be a junior at MIT where he is training to be a research chemist. Mrs. George Mosier. Mr. and Mrs. Max Anglin, and Mr. and Mrs. Emra Stookey attended the Wesley-Stackhouse cousin reunion held at the Bourbon Park last Sunday. Jim Garner was at Boys’ State at Indiana State at Terre Haute last week. Herve Bourlier is spending two weeks in Detroit.

County Boys At Boys'State TERRE HAUTE. IND. - Over 900 Indiana high school junior and senior boys are participating in the 1970 Hoosier Boys’ State being conducted this week on the campus of Indiana State university. The annual eight-day event is an introduction to practical politics to the citizens of tomorrow, providing an insight into the workings of government on the state level. Since registering in last Saturday, the boys have joined one of two mock political parties and are engaged in campaigning now for elections to be held Wednesday when a full completement of city, county and state officers will be chosen. Swearing in of the governor-elect will take place Wednesday night and the oath of office will be administered by former Indiana Supreme Court Judge James Emmert of Shelbyville, and last year’s Boys’ State Governor Gregory Gray of Gary. Also on the daily schedule are drills, physical education activities; classes in law, speech, journalism and other fields; special assemblies and other events. Climaxing the week Friday night will be final military review for which Governor Edgar Whitcomb will be present. Boys’ State delegates from Kosciusko county include: Leesburg. James R.
