There Is Plenty To Do In The Lakes Area

There is plenty to do in the Lakeland area — all you have to do is look around! Do you like to golf? Swim? Sit on a sandy beach and soak up the sunshine? Browse through friendly stores? Visit with the natives? Enjoy a play on a cool summer’s night? Take a boat ride? Ski? Fish? Or, is your cup of tea sitting in the shade without a care in the world? It’s all possible right here in the Lakeland area! Take golfing for example, there are many fine courses in the area. You can play nine holes, 18 holes or try your luck on a par three course. There is miniature golf too for the younger set or those who aren’t quite ready to tackle a nine iron. Maxwelton and South Shore

women enjoy golfing every Tuesday while the women of the Tippecanoe Country club golf on Thursdays. Wawasee, Maxwelton and South Shore golf clubs are all located in die Wawasee area and are open to the public. All have professional golfers on hand to help anyone who needs a pointer or two to improve his game. How about swimming’’ There are many fine beaches in the area with Syracuse’s City Park and the Lakeside beach or Waubee lake being two of the finest. Another area beach open to the public is Waco. The city owned parks of Syracuse and Lakeside on Waubee near Milford offer concession stands, picnic tables and other facilities to make an

enjoyable outing. If you just like to browse through friendly stores then why not plan a shopping spree in Syracuse. Wawasee Village, Milford or North Webster. All have stores filled with fine items and who knows while you are browsing you might find something to your liking and make a purchase or two. The natives are friendly too! Many visitors enjoy afternoon chats with some of the people who take advantage of the area’s natural facilities and live here 12 months a year. Many of these folks can relate interesting stories of the history of Lake Wawasee and the surrounding area. How About A Play? If you enjoy {days then you won’t want to miss the Enchanted Hills Playhouse on the east side of the big lake. The playhouse, under the direction of Robert Tolan, opens its third season on June 24 with the smash hit Broadway musical “I Do! I Do!" This year the playhouse is trying something new as they have "picnic-buffets” before the play. Tolan stated the key to the concept is the word “picnic". He continued, “We want our patrons to enjoy an informal, picnic-like atmosphere. We will be eating at picnic tables, with paper plates and cups and plastic utensils. Everyone will be encouraged to dress casually and comfortably. Coats tfnd ties are definitely out!!!” The buffet meals will not be open to the general public. Only ticket holders for the evening's performance will be admitted and reservations at least 24 hours in advance will be required. Now. how about a boat ride or skiing? Boat rentals are available at several marinas around Wawasee and its sister lakes. You can sail, paddle a canoe, row your own boat or skim over the water in a speedy craft and feel the lake’s fresh waters splash in your face. Whatever you prefer you are sure to find it in the Lakeland area. Is fishing your game? Fish abound in the cool, clear waters of the area lakes and an angler is almost sure to catch bass, bluegills, crappies, perch or the like when trying his luck in the area's waters. If none of these meet your fancy how about sitting in the shade with a cool breeze blowing

FISHING AT WAWASEE"— Dennis Solomon. 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Mathew Solomon of r 1 Leesburg is shown above as he enjoyed an afternoon of fishing at Lake Wawasee. The Solomons are currently building a home on the Wawasee Lake Channel in the Hawaiian Village addition. Dennis reported he had lost a fly but the fish weren’t biting. An eager lad, he will undoubtedly be back to try his luck again in the near future.

PAINTNIC PARTY HELD ON SUNDAY There were seven local persons, members of the art group at Syracuse, taking part in a paint’nic party Sunday at the home of their instructors, the Stevens at Stone Lake near Middlebury. Painting was enjoyed during the morning with a break for a picnic followed by more painting and art criticism. LAKELAND LOCALS Miss Esther Beer and Miss Edith Baumgartner of Milford had dinner Sunday at a restaurant near Syracuse. Mr. and Mrs. Owen Gertsch of Tampa. Fla., and Chicago have arrived to spend the summer at their Lake Wawasee home.

BETWEEN THE LAKES — These boaters are on the channel between the lakes—Syracuse and Wawasee. Many people enjoy trips via boat from one lake to another. The boat in the top photo proves boating is for the entire family. Mother, father, grandmother and the youngsters are all enjoying the cool breezes of the lake. The photo at the left shows a number of boats making their way down the channel. A person can find all forms, shapes and sizes of boats on Lake Wawasee. Bluegill Fishing Good In County Steuben county anglers are taking bluegills at Lake James and Snow Lake and largemouth bass at Clark Lake, Lake James and North Otter Lake. Bluegills are being caught at Pretty Lake, Fennel Lake and Big Long Lake in LaGrange county. In Noble county bluegills are being caught at Chain O’Lakes State Park and at Sylvan Lake near Rome City. , Bluegill fishing is hot at Palestine Lake in Kosciusko county. Bluegills and bass are biting at Big' Chapman and Pike Lakes. Largemouth bass also are being taken at Webster Lake. At the Tri-County State Fish and Wildlife Area they are catching bluegills and redears in pot holes. A. MISS ETNA GREEN' — The Junior ONO club is sponsoring Darcy Lynn Stouder in the Mermaid Festival queen contest this year. Darcy is entered as Miss Etna Green. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stouder. Darcy is 18 and a 1970 graduate of Triton high school in Bourbon. She has brown hair, green eyes, weighs 116 pounds and is five feet, 64 inches tall. She enjoys swimming and singing.
