LIGONIER NEWS By Hose Cunningham West Noble Announces Salary Schedule West Noble School Corporation has announced a new salary Schedule for teachers, effective August 15th. Glen K Longenbaugh, superintendent of schools, calls the schedule competitive with other school districts of the area No 4 across-the-board percentage increases were given the teachers but the hikes range from seven to nine per cent on most levels Mrs. Robert Viars Receives Degree Mrs Rovert Viars of Kendallville received her bachelor of arts degree from Saint Francis college. Fort Wayne, at their exercises on June 2 Mrs Viars is the former Janet Saggars, daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Saggars, of Ligonier. Mrs. Fred Rossmanith Graduates Mrs. Fred Rossmanith of Lowell received her master’s degree in music at the Valparaiso college commencement. Mrs. Rossmanith is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Targgart, of Ligonier Attending the graduation exercises were her parents and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Targgart BASKETBALL CLINIC SET All boys in grades three through eight in the West Noble school system are invited to a free basketball clinic to be held on the outside courts at the Ligonier high school building June 20th. The time is set at 1 to3p.m and in case of rain will be moved inside. Coach Roger Tuggle will be in charge and will be discussing and demonstrating the philosophy and technique of shooting baskets A special invitation is issued to fathers who have young sons and would like to learn how to instruct them in the art of shooting COMMUNITY NEWS Mr and Mrs Ralph Allen of Indianapolis were recent visitors in Ijgonier Mr Allen was for a number of years superintendent of the Ligonier schools Mr and Mrs. Jack Miller and children of Bowling Green. She is sponsored by the Nappanee Rotary club. Denise is 17 and has blonde hair and blue eyes. She weighs 115 pounds and is five feet, two inches tall. A graduate of North Wood high school, she will attend Ball State university this fall. Denise is a life guard at the Nappanee city pool. She plays trumpet and piano and enjoys sports. Bushong Mr. and Mrs. George Arden Bushong of Syracuse entertained at a reception for 25 persons in honor of the graduation of their son. David. KERMIT WELTY IN VOLUNTEER YOUTH WORK Kermit Welty, a resident of Syracuse, and a student at Taylor university. Upland, will spend the sumrtrer in volunteer youth work in Teen Haven, in the Philadelphia inner city, through the Taylor World Outreach (TWO) program. He will be working under the auspices of the William Drury Teen Haven program. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Welty, r 2. Syracuse. More than 150 Taylor students will participate in such activities in Southeast Asia, Europe. Africa, as well as in America's inner cities and will also work with Indian tribes in Latin America, Canada and the United States. The TWO program was initiated three years ago as a means of involving students in volunteer services as a part of their college experiences. Taylor university is an interdehominational private liberal arts college with an enrollment of 1.350 students. Founded in 1846. it is the ninth oldest college in Indiana.
Brademas Attacks Penn Central's Request To End Passenger Service
SOUTH BEND — Congressman John Brademas (D-Ind.) urged the Interstate Commerce Commission to deny the Penn Central’s request to curtail eastwest passenger service. Brademas said: “The request of the Penn Central Railroad to eliminate passenger service threatens to impose on the citizens of Northern Indiana, substantial inconvenience, unnecessary and unacceptable discontinuation of travel patterns.” Brademas cited pending ligislation which he has cosponsored in the House that would establish a national railroad passenger network, a mass transit trust fund, and new

Said Brademas, “I urge that no decision be made on the abandonment of east-west passenger trains until Congress has had an opportunity to consider and act on the pending legislation.” Brademas submitted a written statement to the I.C.C. at hearings held recently in the South Bend Public Library. The Third District Congressman s statement was read by Sam Mercantini. If you believe in the freedoms of civilization you must see that they belong to the other fellow.
