Town Board Passes Ordinances, Discuss Traffic Hazards
During the rescheduled Syracuse town board meeting Tuesday night, Robert Reed town attorney reported he had responded to the court summons in regard to annexation but there was nothing to report at this time. Reed was instructed to draft an ordinance notifying of a change in traffic stops at Brooklyn street and S Oak, reversing the stop traffic at these streets. Permission was granted the clerk-treasurer to invest $250 of the Greider fund money in time certificates. Town insurance does not cover various riders in the police car when called in for assistance thus necessitating deputizing of certain individuals for this purpose, with approval of the board, will give them coverage. Sign Height The question arose as to a law on how high a sign should be posted due to a complaint by a custodian at the school of several signs in the area being low enough for children to bump

Zoning Board The town attorney asked board members to consider appointment of present plan commission members Charles Miller and William Pipp to the board of zoning appeals to fill several vacancies. A number of claims were approved. G. A. Herbison was in attendance regarding property he has leased from the town for 18 years behind his property on south Huntington street, due to a conflict with several home owners in the area believing this leased property is part of theirs so cars are parked here blocking traffic. Herbison stressed this area near the Syracuse dam. needs to be kept open for entrance to the buildings back entrances for loading and unloading zones. The building, recently vacated by Penn Controls, is now leased to the Village Square Housing Division, Delta Homes Corp., Elkhart The section of land being leased by Herbison is not owned by the town, but by the Water Company, and not supported by taxes. Town attorney was instructed to draw up a new lease for Herbison in the name of the Water Company and notify necessary residents in the area as to existing conditions. Attending the meeting were town board president Byron Connolly, Loren, Longenbaugh, Willard Nusbaum, Vernon Beckman. the town attorney and clerk-treasurer. LAKELAND LOCALS Mrs. Jerry Kerr of Columbus. Ohio, was a recent week end guest at the John VanLue home at Syracuse and attended the graduation of her nephew, Dan. Mr and Mrs. Robert V. Fisher. Jr„ and family, Evansville, arrived Tuesday to spend the remainder of the week with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. R. V. Fisher of Syracuse and to attend the Tuesday graduation of his sister. Barbara, from Memorial hospital school of nursing at South Bend.
Sunnyside Park Days Set At New Paris The New Paris Chamber of Commerce and the Jackson township improvement corporation are sponsoring Sunnyside Park Days at New Paris on Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13. The events begin at 1 p.m. on Friday when pony rides will be given until 3:30. At 3:30 the carnival rides will open for the children and will continue through Saturday evening. An ice cream social featuring homemade pies and cakes will be held at 5:30 p.m. followed by a Fairfield band concert at 6. The water fight is set for 7 p.m. and the Country Travelers will present a country and western show at 8 p.m. in the community building while free movies are scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Concessions will be available from 3:30 p.m, on Friday and continue until Saturday evening. A golf tournament starts on the Par 3 course and the Miniature course at 12 noon on Friday and closes at 6 p.m. Sunday. Events on Saturday begin at 8 a m. when the fishing contest for children 6 -14 gets underway. It will continue until 11 a m. The horseshoe pitching contest will be held at 1:30 with the parade set to begin at 3:30 At 4:30 the New Paris Lions will serve a chicken bar-b-q in the park building. The queen will be crowned at 5 p.m. and trophies will be awarded. The garden tractor pull will be held at 5:30 p.m. as will the Saturday concert by the high school band. A fireworks display will conclude the event at 10 p.m. Adv. He explained Mr. Washler’s name had been included because he had resigned earlier to take a job with the state department but had changed his mind and decided to stay in the area. Dr. Barr has extensive experience in school finance and reviewed with the board the various options available for financing of the building and renovating program of the Lakeland schools. Dowtys Retire As Caretakers At Camp Mack After the main adress at the Church of the Brethren mass meeting held at Camp Mack near Milford on Sunday the camp’s board of directors announced the retirement of Virgil and Mary Dowty. caretakers at the camp since 1956. Raymond Hoover spoke of some of the changes which have taken place at the camp through the years. Former camp manager L. W. Shultz spoke briefly of the part the men of the district played in the building of the large auditorium. Later a recliner rocker was presented to the retiring couple. They were the guests of honor at the evening meal. New Caretaker The new resident caretaker. Lores Steury, and his wife Martha, were also introduced to the group. They will live at the camp and will soon occupy the latest addition to the camp — an addition to the staff house, which also includes the offices of the resident director, Raymond Hoover. REPLOGLES LEAVE FOR GERMANY ON TUESDAY Mr. and Mrs. Oliver (“Bud”) Replogle of Milford left Tuesday afternoon for a 20-day trip to Germany where they will visit Mr. Replogle’s sister and her family, the Lt. Col. Thomas Loosmores at Stuttgart. Mrs. Loosmore was formerly Marion Replogle of Milford. They left O’Hare airport in Chicago for Kennedy airport in New York, then flew directly to Luxembourg, before going to Germany. They will return home on July 1. Mr. Replogle is custodian at the Milford junior high school. JAILED AT WARSAW Edward William Patton, Jr., 95. r 3 Syracuse was jailed at Warsaw last week by deputy sheriffs Stanley Holderman and Alan Rovenstine on an assault and battery charge. He was released on bond late Friday morning.

Receives BS Degree At Indiana Central Lucy Kay Kitson, daughter of Mrs. Dallas Kitson and the late Mr. Kitson of Syracuse, received a bachelor of science degree at the 65th annual commencement at Indiana Central College, Indianapolis. on June 7. She is a 1966 graduate of Syracuse high school. BROWNIE TROOP 222 MEETS Brownie Troop 222 of Milford held a meeting at the home of Vickie Zimmerman June 8. Games were played and prizes given. BOOKED AT COUNTY JAIL Booked at the county jail late Friday was Charles Lewis Taft, 33, Syracuse. He was cited for public intoxication. LAKELAND LOCALS Mrs. Tom (Nancy) Levemier, Milford, left for Schweinfort, Germany, Monday, June 1. to be with her husband who is stationed there with the army. She will be staying in Germany for 16 or 17 months. Levemier began his duty in Germany in April and will finish his term of service in October of 1971. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs Dan Levemier of Milford Crystal Borkholder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Borkholder. Milford, has been in Milwaukee, Wis., this week visiting her grandparents. While at a baseball game on Monday, she had the opportunity to meet singer Frankie Avalon and to get his autograph. Crystal is ten years old. Recent house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Kurman Dale Jessop and family of Milford were Mr. and Mrs. Hans Kuchler of Indianapolis; Mrs. Cecelia Mercier and Mrs. Virginia Sutton of Cambridge City; and Stevie Hornung of Connersville. Kindergarten Reminder From Syracuse School Principal Robert D. Hamman reminds parents of children enrolling in kindergarten at Syracuse in September that they must have their enrollment forms completed before the children will be permitted to attend. Many parents still need to have the physical examination form completed by their family physician and returned to the elementary school office. A few parents must bring their child’s birth certificate to verify the birth date. The Syracuse elementary school office will be open all this week and Monday and Tuesday of next week with hours from 8 to 12 noon and 1 to 4 daily. BRIDAL SHOWER HONORS MISS JUDAY A bridal shower was given in honor of Miss Karen Juday June 2 at Wawasee Heights Baptist church, Syracuse. The bride to be was presented, upon her arrival, a beautiful wrist corsage. She also received a corsage composed of a kitchen scratcher, measuring spoons, corn holders and bottle caps. The gift table was appropriately decorated with a bridal umbrella. Various games were played with gifts being presented to the guest of honor. Refreshments included individual cakes decorated with their name and a wedding ring served to the 18 in attendance. Miss Juday will become the bride of Garry Ringler on August 8. $9 DAMAGE IN CAR FIRE SATURDAY Syracuse firemen listed damage at $9 in a car fire at 9:27 Saturday morning near the drugstore. The car was registered to Glenn Unziker and the fire had been nearly extinguished when firemen arrived.
