Boating Furnishes Fun Outdoors for Everyone

Today’s Outboards Power the Way To Pleasure, Excitement for AU Who Are Young in Spirit Boating is for the young. .... And the old. . . . And everyone in between. Next time you're around boaters, take a look for yourself. You’ll find people of all ages, from all walks of life, enjoying the fun and excitement of pleasure boating. There’ll probably be a couple of teenagers, enjoying the waterways in a sleek, speedy runabout. There’s sure to be some guys who’ll never see the sunny side of 40 again, off to their favorite fishing spot in an out-board-powered skiff. There’ll be plenty of families, enjoying boating as the best way to get out into the great outdoors — together. And chances are you’ll see a grandmother and grandfather, savor-

ing the get-away-from-lt-all solitude a small boat and| plenty of cruiseable water) offer. Boating is for everyone. Maybe that’s why more than 43-million Americans this year will climb into boats of one sort or another and weigh anchor in search of leisure-time recreation. i Few ef Oar* Sold* Today’s boats mirror the taste of a society swinging more and more towards the youthful. The trusty old rowboat is fast going the way of the streetcar; today's fishing "skiffs,’’ for example, offer such conveniences as builtin bait wells and rod holders, under-the-seat storage compartments and computer-de-signed hulls. And there aren't as many oars sold these days, either. The modern runabout -+■ usually, just about any boat designed for an outboard putting out 33 horsepower or more — boasts of looks that, would do justice to the best of Detroit’s stylists. Sleek, aerodynamic lines, dazzling paint and pleated upholstery, carpets and compartments, rub rails and radios, all add up to make the 1970 runabout a thing of functional beauty, a waterbound sportscar perfect for the young"at heart, regardless of age Trend in Outboard* There are still plenty of the traditional tried-and-true boats on the market, though. These are the onies that eschew fancy trim and hoodscoops for usable space, reclining seats for storage space. Outboard motors, too. reflect this trend. With power options from a mini-motor m on up to -4 115horse f power mill#, there’s something for everyone, whether he be fisherman, water skier, racer or Sundayafternoon cruiser The move is~towards higher horsepower outboards, however. Outboard technology has banished the gremlins that plagued the old "knucklebusters’’ of just a few years ago, so that today, the modern outboard, regardless of size, offers the very best in performance, reliability and economy. In fact, that’s one of the nice things about boating: whatever type of boat and motor you need, you can be

sure there’s a perfect match waiting at a marine dealer. Boats in U»e As more and more boaters take to the water, more and more uses for boats are discovered. Pastors in such 'watery'’ locales as Florida and the North Woods have found boats let them get around to their congregations with an ease otherwise impossible. And in California, a rancher whose land borders a river uses boats, instead of horses, to tend his fences. P.M k 4 SPARE Pack a spare set of radio batteries in tackle box or gadget bag.

Return Their Winter Hospitality With Swim Party in Backyard

If you have a swimming pool, this summer you can return with interest all the hospitality you enjoyed during the winter A crowded cocktail party is uncomfortable and old hat, but a big party in the great outdoors, with the focus on fine food and fun in the pool is something else. If your friends like to dress up. make it a costume party. How about a deep sea theme, with guests coming as some form of marine life? If they’re imaginative, you’ll probably see a wild assortment of swordfish, angelfish, catfish, bluefish, starfish and goldfish. And perhaps a few mermaids, Neptunes and frogmen. Better warn them that costumes should be either waterproof or easy to exchange for a swim suit. For Party Prop* For party props, beg, buy or borrow Oriental fish kites, fish-shaped pool toys, seashells — anything that smacks of life under the sea. Make your menu predominantly seafood dishes to carry out the party theme. Prepare some things in advance, and cook others on the patio for on-the-spot char-broiled

flavor. The easiest and cleanest cookouts are done on gas grills, which may be connected to a natural gas line, or fueled by tanks of LP gas. Some are permanently installed: others can be moved around and quick-connected to the gas supply. Since gas heat is instant and controllable, and there’s no grime to contend with, a gas grill will make party preparations and clean-up easier. For the Menu For the menu, you might serve Oriental shrimp appetizers — shrimp marinated in soy sauce, honey, sherry and crushed garlic. Broil them quickly on the gas grill and have a generous supply of Japanese wood skewers or big toothpicks and cocktail napkins on hand for serving them. Have an unlimited supply of green salad, beverages both hot and cold, and buttered rolls warmed in foil on the grill. For an extra touch that makes a good party memorable, illuminate the pool and patio with the soft glow of gaslights. Some have solar controls that automatically

Hardest Job of Year forYour Car Is Coming Up, So Give it a Break

It may be a vacation for you but it’s most likely your car will do the hardest work it’s had to perform all year. So, when you go into the Great Outdoors this year, give your car a break. Like a human being, a car that has remained relatively inactive all year tends to get out of condition. Those short trips to the office and the market and Sunday visits to Aunt Ida tend to keep the engine out of shape. Carbon deposits build up and engine components deteriorate.. The engine becomes sluggish and during extended vacation trips a peppy, responsive engine is a must. Visit Service Station For dependable performance during your vacation trip, visit your favorite service outlet for a thorough tune-up and engine check. Here are the basic ingredients of such a tune-up as outlined by Champion Spark Plug Company. Such services are vital to good performance, especially if you've driven 10,000 miles since your last tune-up. O Install new spark plugs. Inspect spark plug wires and boots. Test cranking, starting and operating voltage. O Install new ignition points and condenser, set distributor dwell angle and timing. Check compression. Test charging rate of generator or' alternator. □ Test coil output. Check distributor condition. Clean and inspect distributor rotor and cap. □ Perform any necessary carburetor service. Replace air cleaner element. Check and replace, if necessary, anti-pollution devices. □ Check battery and cables. Having these services performed before your trip will help avoid a variety of troubles. For example, if your car is generally garaged, it has been protected from the elements. On vacation trips, it is likely that your car will be exposed to the elements overnight. Should rain or condensation be heavy, chances of hard starting are increased unless the ignition system is in good working order. Can’t starts aren’t the only penalty from an engine in need of tune-up. High-speed
