Don’t Just Grumble —Become Involved Yourself

Do you grumble when your favorite beach is overcrowded, or you can't find a pad at the campground of your choice? Does it seem there ought to be a ski lift or a boat launching ramp closer to home? Or a ballfield, or a swimming pool, or a trail? Most people do complain about such things these days The numbers of outdoor ac-

tivists are growing at a fantastic rate while the areas and facilities for them to enjoy are limited and their growth rate is way below pressures for expansion. Recent legislation such as the National Scenic Rivers and Trails Acts, and the growing involvement of states and communities w’ith the program of the Land and

Implementation of these laws evolves at State and local, as well as at the Federal level. The Department of the interior’s Bureau of Outdoor Recreation suggests that outdoorsmen (and women> can help themselves by getting involved in these and other and national efforts to balance outdoor recreation supply and demand. Rarely before in our history have citizen groups been so encouraged to participate in matters of environmental concern, and rarely have their accomplishments been so encouraging. Citizen victories in preserving open space in our countryside as well as our cities are due, at least in part, to the fact that a wealth of

assistance and Information is available for everyone who wants to act instead of grumble. There are some 35 Federal agencies with more than 90 specific programs that in some way affect outdoor recreation. Citizen awareness of these programs often spurs both private and public interest in preserving or developing outdoor recreation areas and facilities. These are briefly explained in a Bureau of Outdoor Recreation publication called "Federal Assistance in Outdoor Recreation,” which is available for 35c from the Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402. The programs covered range from financial and technical assistance that might be available for cleaning up a lake, for converting

farmland to public or private outdoor recreation areas. The Nationwide Outdoor Recreation Plan, “The Recreation Imperative,” discusses the Nation’s outdoor recreation estate, and recommendations to improve it “From Sea to Shining Sea” suggests many for citizen action in a broad range of environmental programs. These also are available through the Government Printing Office. ♦ • • Any number of technical nublications on various aspects of natural resource conservation, use and development are available. Heaters Add To Time You Enjoy Patio Outdoor living is delightful but only when it’s comfortable. Gas infra-red radiant heaters now are adding months to life in the great outdoors for an ever-increasing number of families. Last year sales of infra-red heaters soared and they are expected to jump again this year. Many families have found they can enjoy cookouts even in winter with infra-red heaters installed on their patios. Hunters and fishermen now use them, too, to keep warm at the campsite without heavy clothing — even in be-low-freezing temperatures. Infra-red heaters may be stationary or portable. The portable units, which use LP gas, can be used while riding in a golf cart, working in a garage, or camping, and for melting ice and snow on walks and driveways. Hand carts are available for several of the portable models. Natural gas service can be extended from the house to supply stationary infra-red heaters, which may be mounted on a post, wall or ceiling. An especially popular installation is on the post of an outdoor gaslight. A minimum of two heaters is usually installed to bracket people between them. Spacing of heaters depends on how protected the area is. Although the principle has been known for years, not until recently has infra-red heating come into its own as an adjunct to outdoor living. It has been used extensively, however, by Industry to make otherwise unbeatable areas comfortable to w’ork in.

Smart modern women allocate a closet at the beginning of the season as a place to keep the family's outdoor recreation gear conveniently available for weekend trip* as well as in advance of the planned annual vacation.

Compact TV Sets Serve Outdoors x You don’t have to miss your favorite program, history making news or television specials if you take your TV set on vacation this year. Television sets today are compact enough to fit into luggage compartments, and keep you in touch whether you are at a lodge, lake cottage or in a trailer-camper. Most campers are fitted with an outdoor cable that hooks up to outlets in our trailer parks. Marinas also have AC current outlets within reach of a boat’s berth. Save your radio or TV packing box as protection from salt mist and road bumps. FOR COOKING ONLY A modern gas range in your camper, trailer or mobile home is a blessing, but remember it’s for cooking only. Never use any gas range for heating, whether you’re at home or out camping.
