Children Can Be An Asset Afloat

There 1s nothing on earth with more energy than a kid confined in a small place. Whether it is in a car, an airplane, a dentist’s chair or a boat, a youngster seems to have an infinite capacity for constant motion.

There are three courses of action open to you as a parent. You can do nothing at the dentist’s, and watch the little darling sink his teeth into the doctor's thumb; or in a boat, throw the bait box overboard in desperation. The second solution is to yell a little. The third solution, recommended by the Evinrude

News Service, and the one that will prevent either of the others from happening, is to keep Jimmy or Joanie occupied so that he or she won’t feel the urge to squirm, to tap the windshield with a hammer, or to poke your neighbor in the belly to see if it is real. And you’ll save a lot of money on bait buckets. Family Fun Boating is recreational activity, fun for every member of the family. Since boating is such fun, the attention span of a young child is lengthened considerably. But you want to have fun too, so you will have to see to it that Jimmy and Joanie don’t get into mischief. A family boating outing is a perfect time for constructive fun for children. Start off by treating the youngsters like grown-ups. Nothing pleases a child more than to be treated as

an equal by a parent. Kids are naturally imitative. They’ll follow the example you set as a boatman. Let them see you having fun; they’ll want to emulate you. Let them. It's never too early to let a child take the wheel, for example. You'll be there to supervise; but it will be an indescribable thrill for a young boy or girl to steer the boat. Teach Rules Teach your children the basic rules of the road and the common sense rules of safety. The rules, once learned will be retained. When you give instructions, be sure to explain the reasons behind each rule. Your child will be much more receptive to instruction if he knows ‘‘why.’’ Make a game out of learning the meaning of buoys and markers, or the different types of power and sailboats you see.

TO YOU~j

When a youngster shares in the fun, he should also share in the work. If you’ve done the job right, he will look forward to even the most routine chores such as stowing gear properly, and keeping lines shipshape. Launching, shoving-off and docking are areas in which you can assign appropriate responsibilities according to your children’s ages. Make a child proud of his competence and he will be anxious to increase his expertise. Build Pride Seasonal boat maintenance is another area where chores can be delegated. In limited doses, painting, polishing and lubricating will instill pride in equipment and teach the child to respect property, a respect and pride that will spill over into everyday life. The most important thing to remember, is never to force anything on children, even fun. If you use common sense and imagination, you’ll be able to develop in your children abilities that will make them assets to your boating enjoyment.

Inboard Engines Blossom In Size And Kind

The inboard engine offering for 1970 has been likened by one boatman to the expanding universe, “scattering ever outward, yet never decreasing in density. They seem to proliferate while they diversify!” c Conventional production engines currently span twice the range offered a few years ago and offer four times the number of upfcons, features and transmissions. Inboard marine engines for pleasure boats now range from 8 to 525 hp, and from one to eight cylinders in both gasoline and diesel. Each manufacturer offers a selection of power trains: bob-tail, manual or hydraulic transmission, direct drive or reduction geared, V-drive, angle drive and outdrive. Yes, and there are turbine jet drives, too. Closed circuit, freshwater cooling is a popular option on most gasoline engines and is offered as standard on some. Most of the new diesels come through with fresh-water cooling as part of the standard package. The closed system offers faster warmup, better control of temperature and much reduced internal corrosion. Diesels have shed even more weight while increasing horsepower output per pound of weight. Smaller diesels for auxiliary sailboat use are blos-

Keeping children occupied afloat is the key to pleasant family boating. Children can lend a hand in loading the boat, and in stowing gear.

soming. Fuel oil burners from 5 to 35 hp are now offered by several manufacturers for the raghoister wanting the safety and economy of diesel pro pulsion. Diesels have adopted the outdrive, too. Or is it the other way around ? The houseboat explosion has contributed to this development since they usually are designed for outdrive power.. The result is the happy marriage of the diesel to the outdrive in a wide range of powers. Bigger bores, shorter strokes and V-configu rations have made some of the current diesels spittin’ images of their gas-burn-ing cousins. Several of the high speed, light weight Vs look startlingly like automobile motors. The gargantuan, ungainly diesel of yesteryear is gone. The high performance two-cycle diesel has expanded its scope. Manufactured by Detroit Diesel for many years in a selection of powers and placements, the type is now joined by Chrysler’s Nissan. Turbocharging is on the upswing for both gasoline and diesel engines, with particular emphasis on the latter. While women’s skirt hemlines go up, engine profiles go down, albeit perhaps not in the same ratio. Numerous new inboards are offered in slant

or angled versions, and a few are horizontal. Lower engines allow lower cockpit decks, contributing to cruiser comfort and safety. Engine cost on a horsepower basis remains a bright part of the boating picture. A typical 200 hp gasoline power plant complete with transmission and all accessories, can still be bought for under $2,000. Typical price for a 200 hp diesel is about $6,000. But diesel prices vary more widely for a given power than gas engine prices. “Toned-down” and “cooled” versions of gas engines are marketed by two or three manufacturers. Such “de-souped” mills are aimed squarely at the power cruiser man who cruises extensively and hard-and who wants reliability above all. Lower compression, slower rotation, beefier parts, tougher valves, mark these work horses. Seamaster

This will help rid them of wrinkles and any musty smell from winter storage. Horizon Line Never cut your picture in half with the horizon. If you want to accent spaciousness, place the horizon low; to suggest closeness, place the horizon high. formance, and increased breaker point life or even complete elimination of the points. On some new engines, a slotted disc replaces the points. On others, tiny rotating magnets do the work. Attention to details on the 1970 inboard engines means starter motors are placed higher on the engines, away from bilge water and easy to service. Better drive arrangements and multiple V-belts are appearing on alternators and cooling water pumps. Exhaust manifolds are designed and placed to prevent back-flow of condensate into the cylinders. At least two firms offer engine conversion kits in addition to complete marine engines. Kits for both automobile engines and truck diesels are available.
