Outboard Boats Adaptable For a Variety of Activities
If you asked a dozen skippers of outboard boats how they use their craft, you’d probably get a dozen different answers. Depending on the individual interests of the skipper, each boat may be equipped differently to make it more suitable for fishing, water skiing, cruising, skin diving or any number of other water activities. The versatility of the basic outboard boat is what makes it possible to adapt it to many uses. x
Outboard boats have opened new vistas for the sportsman, giving him mobility in an entire fishing or hunting area. For the adventurous boatman, miles of waterways are at his disposal for cruising, camping and exploring. The explorer can also find a totally new world underwater, using his outboard boat as a home base. Water skiing is another common sight in the boating areas of the country. And it's a natural for the outboard, Running over-the

waves at about 3b miles an hour is a most exciting sensation. At a mere 10 miles an hour you canXski on a saucer for and some spills. Varx 'Equipment An average outboard boat can be adapted to many of these activities just by varying the equipment. The average length of all outboard boats purchased last year was 15.9 feet. Boats in this length category have been the most popular for a number of years.
For all around fun and performance on a boat this size, most families will choose a motor of 40 to 60 horsepower. The rig will give them speed and power for water skiing, plenty of room for fishing, and will be well suited for short cruises and just plain boat riding. The same 16 foot boat used primarily for water skiing may be rigged quite differently. Many skiiers prefer a larger motor of 85 to 115 horsepower. The boat is often fitted with a special tow line hitch and a low’ pitch propeller for maximum thrust. Ski Boat Avid water skiing enthusiasts usually prefer an open utility boat without the rear seats. This gives more room for storing skis and equipment. Other accessories . such as a boarding ladder, rear view mirror,

speedometer and tachometer are often used on skiing boats. The average 16 foot boat adapted to family cruising uses motors of varying size, but the trend is toward higher horsepower. For cruising, many skippers equip their boats with convertible tops. Rear seats are often passed up in favor of deck chairs which can be folded for more room aboard or taken ashore. Cruising enthusiasts also like to outfit their boats with plenty of accessories. Just about any boat can be adapted to a special use. In most cases, it’s simply a matter of adding equipment or sometimes removing it. The important thing is to start out with a boat that has a good basic design. SEEK BLUE STAR Look for the American Gas Association’s Certification Seal on all outdoor gas equipment — lights, infra-red heaters and pool heaters, and ranges and water heaters in mobile and trailers. The A.Gjv Blue Star on a gas appliance signifies that it has met national safety standards.
Outdoor Plant Jobs Need Attention LAFAYETTE - Lawn and flower projects are not the only ones that demand the homeowner’s attention in the spring. Projects such as exterior repairs and painting fences, porches, trellises, screen and outdoor furniture are also spring chores. In painting, three basic steps are important, says John Foley, Purdue university extension agricultural engineer. They are selecting the right paint for the surface to be painted, preparing the surface adequately and applying the paint properly. Foley stresses these points: —select the proper paint in colors that will blend with the surroundings of the house and also satisfy your preferences. Bright colored objects will create focal points if this is desirable. —paint wood and most metals with either solvent or water base paint, but remember these materials need a primer coat to seal the surface against moisture. —use a paint with abrasionresistance on porches, steps, screens, etc. Many paints are specially formulated for this type of surface. —finish outdoor furniture with exterior enamel or penetrating pigmented stain. Apply an enamel primer to wood furniture or a special metal primer to metal furniture. —clean all surfaces of dirt, oil. scale and other impurities prior to painting. Then, be sure the surface is dry before commencing. —use paint in temperature preferably above 50 degrees F or higher. The temperature of the paint should be about 70 degrees F. —apply any caulking needed after the primer coat. —put on finish coats of paint immediately after the primer has dried. —place paint-filled rags in a fireproof container or burn immediately after discarding.

Modern Tent Erects Easily For Campers The first tent or portable shelter probably came into existence when prehistoric ■nan had a few complaints irom his wife about spending all her time in that dark, damp cave. To keep peace in the family, he took her away from it aJI during the summer months and stretched an animal skin between two trees to provide protection. We have American Indians to thank for the first portable shelter. Their conical tent made of skins had all sorts of refinements including flaps for regulating draft

and escape of smoke. Another legendary tent is the pup tent of World War I fame which put a roof over the heads of our doughboys and a w’ord in our vocabulary. Hardly spacious, it afforded a minimum of comfort. Now the young camper under ten who wants to set up housekeeping in the backyard tries it. Along about the time wall-to-wall carpeting became popular on the home front, the wall tent sheltered World War II Gl’s on the fighting fronts. Although this tent furnishes unobstructed standing room, the wall tent is bulky to carry, difficult to put up and hardly a happy choice for a camper who likes to camp without bringing along his own construction crew. Today’s camper will find
a wide variety of tents to choose from — some shaped like umbrellas, others that pop into shape and, look like igloos, and there’s even one inspired by the covered wagon. Although we haven’t any record of how many Eskimos own Pop-Tents, this iglooshaped tent would be ideal for them since it sets up easily on ice, snow or rock without stakes. Campers in more temperate climates will be happy to know it’s every bit as effective in grassy knolls, wooded glens or on sunny beaches. Even a beginner finds this tent easy to manage. The roomy Prairie Schooner is great for family camping or for groups Os hunters, fishermen or boating enthusiasts.
