They hope to mail from the > small New Paris post office at least a ton and a half of printed materials per day. They hope to be in production by November. • • ♦ Real credit Is due Helen Murchie for her work with a special education class at Syracuse junior high school. Her one big drive is to push reading ability among members of her small class. To do this she uses a Belloptican machine to throw newspaper and magazine pictures on a screen for reading. This way she encourages her students to read the current weekly newspaper coming into her classroom. ■• • • An insight into the golfing ability of Chris Schenkel was gained when a listener asked him last Wednesday night what handicap he would post at the Tippecanoe Country club. “I would like to post an 18 handicap, but I think it will be closer to 12,” he commented. • • • The blue parakeet making its home in the trees in the vicinity of Mock’s Marine Service, Lake Wawasee, has been captured according to Mrs. R. C. Tytler,
and being cared for until the owner claims it.
• * ♦ With the steady rise in college costs, the day is not far off when education may become as expensive as ignorance. • * • Anyone want to know Chris Schenkel’s home address? It’s ’ 200 East End Ave., N. Y. C. | 10028. ! • • • Realtor and auto salesman Chet Elder is working on his weight problem, but in a different way. He has purchased a S2O sauna belt which he wears. An inquiry about it will bring forth a short ; talk about its benefits. ] It was broad and black and weighs about 20 pounds, and is ’ worn about the waist. Chet says ' in a short time it has taken $ five inches off his girth. e •• • C North Webster banker J. Homer Shoop arrived home Friday from Haiti where he won the Haitian National Senior Doubles Tennis championship with his longtime partner Gardner Mullay of Miami. Homer will remain here 1 for the summer, hopefully taking some part in the 25th annual Mermaid Festival which he helped get on its feet a number of years ago.
He and Mullay will defend their Southland tennfa title in Chicago on June 12. The tennis duo also holds the Florida state tennis championship title and the Puerto Rican tennis championship. • • • We have a constant supplier of editorial material in Everett Ketering, the latest being a newspaper editorial on “Moonlighting Senators.” It notes that the senators gave themselves a $12,500 raise last year, then a number of them set out on speaking terms for which they were reimbursed. Sen. Edmund S. Muskie (DMaine), for example, earned SBO,183 from speeches and writings, bringing his earnings to $122,683. Second was Sen. George S. Me Govern (D-S D.) who earned $63,501, then Sen. Birch Bayh (DInd.) who earned $38,950, followed by Sen. Mark O. Hatfield (ROreg.) with $28,750. The editorial goes on that these high earners are frequently absent when the Senate roll is called. Everett doesn’t like this and many of us don’t either. • • •. The best way to get your mind off other troubles is to wear tight shoes. 000 ' Dr. Bill Myers, Syracuse physician, has come up with a new one. A boat builder before going to medical school, he has now built him a new boat, made of (are you ready?) concrete! The boat is 37 feet long, is supposed to be lighter and stronger than wood. • • « A late phone call at the James Mench home Monday night proved to be their son, Dennis, spending a week of R & R at Sydney, Australia. Dennis is stationed at CuChi about 20 miles from Saigon and due to be discharged in the next month or six weeks. • • • The annual Syracuse high school alumni banquet was well attended Saturday night, including eight members of the 1920 graduating class. The School Chorus of America supplied the musical portion of
the program and jovial “magician” Nelson Auer was emcee, adding a number of mystical acts. • ♦ ♦ A new flag is flying over the Syracuse fire department building, a gift of the American Legion Wawasee Post 223, Syracuse. The flag, to be flown 24 hours a day, can be seen at night with a spotlight shining on that area. ♦ • • Mr. and Mrs. Jack Carr, daughters Christie and Connie Sue, Patti Holtzclaw and Kris Ellen Prickett were among the many persons attending the 500 time trials at Indianapolis Sunday. Willis Alt Presents Program At Christian Church Willis Alt of Milford presented a slide program on his trip to India at the Thursday evening meeting of the Ladies Aid of the Milford Christian church. Mr. Alt made his trip four years ago. He had lived in India for six months and told of his experiences and the life of the people there. The meeting opened in the overflow room of the sanctuary with Mrs. D. G. Seely, president presiding. The women were reminded of the area women s meeting to be held in Milford on June 4, the church picnic on June 7 and the father-son banquet on June 27. Following the program which was given in the fellowship room refreshments of sherbert and cookies with tea and coffee were served by the ladies of the afternoon circle. Politics - 1970 Meet Your Candidates
JOHN K. SNYDER, candidate for the Republican nomination for United States Senator, said recently that “VANCE HARTKE’S co-sponsorship of a bill cutting off funds for the President’s use in Cambodia amounts to nothing less than aiding the enemy. Hartke is attempting to do to our fighting men what entire divisions of North Vietnamese and Viet Cong have been unable to do. that is, cut off their supply lines. Hartke proposes that the Commander-In-Chief of this nation be denied the funds with which to adequately protect our men in Viet Nam.” ♦ ♦ * State senator LESLIE DUVALL (R-Marion county), majority caucus chairman, announced the Republican senate campaign committee would conduct a campaign conference for the office of state senator. This conference was held in Republican State Headquarters on May 23 and was designed to assist Republican Senate candidates on campaign techniques and also to educate them on some of the state issues. • « • An Indiana university Purdue university organization at Indianapolis Professors for the re-elec-tion of Senator VANCE HARTKE. (D-IndJ has been formed, it was announced last week by DR.
ROBERT I. LONG, chairman of the group. Dr. Long said he would also act in a liaison capacity with the statewide committee of college and university professors for the re-election of Hartke. “In his two terms as United States Senator, he has made his particular concern for those Americans who have no special interest group to speak for them—the elderly. the w’age earner, the unemployed and the underemployed,” he said in a statement. He also cited Hartke’s speaking for the youth and the minorities, “all of whom can be considered the forgotten Americans.” Vacation Bible School To Begin June 8 At Milford The annual vacation Bible school of the First Brethren church of Milford will begin on Monday, June 8, at 9 a.m. Qasses will run until 11:30 a.m. and continue through Friday, June 12.
