During the awards program held Friday morning in the North Webster junior high school gym, students in grades 6-7-3 were honored for their various achievements during the past year. Legion Elects New Officers Nominations and election of officers for. the Herbert Kuhn American Legion Post 253, Monday night, resulted in the reelection of Jack Angel as commander Eugene Baugher is first vice president, and Larry Shock second vice president Others newly elected are: Tom Davis - adjutant Fred Hunter - financial officer Jim Kuhn - chaplain . Earl Fnbley - historian Herman Adams - service officer Keith Miller - sergeant-at-arms. POPPY DAYS A SUCCESS Poppy Days last week end were reported very successful in the North Webster area, according to American Legion Auxiliary president Elinore Enyeart. Nearly $175 was collected. Poppy Chairman- Judy Hen wood, and Mrs. Wilma Alshouse, whose son Dennis Gest was killed in the Viet Nam war, prepared a windowdisplay, and poppy posters were displayed in various store windows. Joni Black, sixth grader, was awarded $5 for her poster, and the poster, which won first place, was sent to the Indiana Department at Indianapolis. Debbie Kruger, also of the sixth grade, won $3 as second prize; and. Dennis Grieder, seventh grade, won $2 as third prize. —NW- ' HOLD MOTHERDAUGHTER BANQUET Mrs. Paul Beezley was presented a lovely corsage for the mother with the oldest daughter present at the mother-daughter banquet Tuesday night at the United Methodist church. Mrs. Tony Clouse had the youngest daughter present and Mrs. David Berger had the most daughters present. Approximately 160 people enjoyed the carry-in dinner. Music was furnished by the Jubileers and Buchaneers of Syracuse Becky Weeks gave the welcoming remarks and Mrs. John Weeks the response. The invocation was given by Mrs. Russell Churchill and the benediction was offered by Mrs. Richard Snoke. Mrs. Douglas Mock served as mistress of ceremonies. The men and boys of the church congregation served the meal and washed dishes. Mrs. John Dipert was decorating chairman and Mrs. Arden Rider served as program chairman Officers elected during the business portion were: Mrs. Russell Churchill — president Mrs. Richard Snoke — vice president Mrs. Jay Boyer — treasurer Mrs Ronald Moerchen — reelected secretary. Mrs. Donald Dye is the secretary of program materials; Mrs. Ira Nine, chairman of membership cultivation; Mrs. James Greiner, spiritual growth; Mrs. Charles Turner, local responsibilities; Mrs. Earl Black, missionary education; Mrs Howard Bemish, Christian social relations. Nelson Hunt and Mrs. Marion Lantz 1973. —NWUNITED METHODIST CHURCH NEWS The youth of the United Methodist church, with their leaders, had a clean-up day Saturday at Camp Lake Wood, located northeast of Kendallville. After cleaning out brush, trees, weeds, etc., from the entrance and yard, and cleaning the main lodge, the youngsters studied from the book of Romans. They also had a time of Bible discussion Sunday morning, returning home around 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Dr. Ernest Lawshe. retired, filled the pulpit Sunday morning in the absence of Rev. Weeks. Melody Nye, a recent graduate of the West Noble high school, received a book entitled "After the Tassel is Moved,” in honor of her graduation. , Arthur Keif er. r 1 Leesburg, is a patient at the Whitley county hospital. Mrs. Arthur Iden is recuperating at home after an extended stay in the hospital. Charles Turner was admitted to the Saint Joseph hospital in South Bend. Sunday. —NW— Five To Attend Second District Conference Mrs. Elinore Enyeart. Mrs. Lillian Barker. Mrs. Iva Krouse, Mrs. Stanley Vanator and Mrs. Edith Kesterson will attend the second district conference of the American Legion auxiliary at Hebri i on June 10. It was announced at a recent local meeting that initiation for new members will be incorporated into the June 2 meeting and nominations for new officers will also be heard. —NW— County Extension Agent Guest Os Backwater Friends Thursday Mrs. Ann Hancook. Kosciusko county extension homemakers agent, was a guest Thursdayevening at the home of Mrs. RayRupprecht when the Backwater Friends club met for the Maymeeting. Vice president Mrs. Richard Snoke opened the meeting. Members sang America the Beautiful, repeated the pledge to the American flag, and the club creed. Meditations were given byMrs. Norman Rhodes, reading several poems about mothers, and the group sang the Levee Song, reviewed by Mrs. Howard Bemish. Mrs. Orva Miller gave health and safety tips on proper shelf storage, and care of the hands

while trimming grass. Garden remarks dealt with the proper watering of garden plants, using the old fashioned watering can, and methods used to prune grape vines. The lesson “meals for unexpected company” was presented by Mrs. Arden Rider and Mrs. —Orva Miller, who served samples of tuna croquettes, spice loaf, and chocolate pudding. Mrs. Harold Moser presented a lesson on the generation gap. which gave rise to an extremely lively discussion. Mrs. Ron Moerchen was Welcomed as a new member. Roll call responses were names of Bible mothers or Bible verses containing the word mother. Mrs. Archie Hoffert won the door prize and delicious refreshments were served by the hostess, assisted by Mrs. Norman Rhodes as co-hostess. -NW—MAKE EXTENDED TRIP BY CANOE Four area teenagers embarked on an extended trip by canoe Friday evening. Kerry Barrett of near Barbee Lake, Jeff Farrell, Charles Baldwin and brother of Syracuse, launched their craft on the Tippecanoe River Friday evening, intending to arrive at the state park near W’inimac sometime Sunday. Enroute they encountered at least three thunderstorms which hindered their progress. Tired and sunburned, they completed their journey quite late Sundayevening. and returned home by automobile with Mr. and Mrs Charles Baldwin. —NW— S Sgt. Larry Baugher Home From Okinawa Staff sergeant and Mrs. LarryBaugher and daughters arrived at the home of his parents, the Paul Baughers of North Webster, at 5 p.m. Saturday evening after spending the past 39 months in Okinawa. The young Baughers will enjoy 40 days visiting friends and relatives in the North Webster area and with Mrs. Baughers

Mr J and Mrs. James Cooper and family, of Findlay, Ohio, spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Randy Thomas and Lori. Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Cooper are twins. Mrs. Paul Grile remains a patient in the Saint Joseph hospital at South Bend. Mrs. Nellie Jones is recovering satisfactorily at the home of her daughter Mrs. Roy Caywood, after undergoing major surgery recently at Goshen. There will be no Sunday night services at the Church of God, due to the commencement exercises at Wawasee high school. Mrs. Darwin (Wanda) Cataline is spending the week at the home of her parents. Rev. and Mrs. Lewis Thomas, awaiting Sgt. Cataline’s discharge from the army on Wednesday at Fort Riley, Kan. The Catalines plan to make their home in Findlay, Ohio. Graduates May 31 At Indianapolis Floyd Newcomer, better known as Butch by his many friends, will graduate from the Indiana School for the Deaf at Indianapolis on May 31.
