North Webster By MAYZEL MILLER North Webster Honor Rolls Released For Fifth Grading Period Os Year
The honor rolls have been released by North Webster school principal G. Wendell Bryant for the fifth grading period. The only student on the distinguished honor roll, with all A’s, was Debbie Engleberth, a sixth grade student Those on the regular honor roll are as follows: Additional Mermaid Entries Received j- North Webster Mermaid festival publicity chairman. Thurman Rinker, announced recently two additional parade entries' They are the Fort Wayne Shfine horse patrol and the donkey patrol. It was also mentioned that Stu Collins will represent the Fort Wayne radio station WOWO instead of Jack Underwood as was announced previously .. ’ _NW’~ I Five Receive Webelos Awards Phil Payne, assistant cubmaster. conducted the pack 26 meeting recently during which five cubs received their Webelos awards They are Bobby Wright, Doug Charlton. Steve Badskey, Steve Wilson and Don Wiley. The five will now go into boy scout troop ‘26 led by Robert Garr, scoutmaster Kay Bell, who has been den leader for the Webelos during the past year, has resigned the post and-was presented a certificate of recognition and appreciation —NW—PFC. KENNETH ENYEART IN SOUTH VIET NAM Pfc Kenneth Enyeart arrived m Viet Nam on March 23 and is stationed at Camp Eagle north of Da Nang He took his training at Fort Knox. NORTH WEBSTER PYTHIANS MEET Mrs.. Clifford Payne, a former past grand chief and member of the North Webster Pythians Sisters, now of Florida, was a guest Monday night at the Pythian meeting. Mrs. Verland Bockman, most excellent chief, presided during the business session, when plans were discussed for the district convention to be held in North Webster on May 14. Guests are expected from a 50-mile area. Mrs. Russell Moore reviewed the life of Thomas Edison, as a special feature. Mrs. Stanley Vanator and Mrs. Russell Moore were appointed to the investigating committee for a potential new member. Refreshments were furnished by Mrs. Howard Bockman and Miss Martha Bockman and served by Mrs. Roy Spry and Mrs. Myrtle Greisinger. —NW— United Methodist Church New’ officers elected Sunday evening by the Youth Fellowship, for the coming year are as follows: Gint Olson - president Kurt Kruger - vice president Jyl Sharp - secretary Shannan Hall - treasurer Representative for grade 12 - Darlene Long Grade 11 - Rebecca Long Grade 10 - Jill Plew Grade 9 - Bruce Mitchell Grade 8 - Jennifer Longenecker. The seventh grade representative will be chosen in the fall. A film entitled “Mr. Chairman. I Do Move” was shown during the church school segment Sunday morning. Singspiration A singspiration was featured Sunday evening. Mrs. Ralph Ray planned the program and James Turner led the singing. David Blackwell on the clarinet; Jeff Butts on drums; and James Turner, trombone, were accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Loren Kruger as they provided music. Hint Olson and Kurt Kruger presented a vocal duet. Gloria Shipley a vocal solo; and Mrs. Marion Lantz, a vocal solo. The youth group sang Kum Ba Yah, and there was also congregational singing. —NW— Church of God Each mother who attends the Sunday morning service will receive a gift. A baby dedication service will be incorporated into the Sunday morning program Election of Mother of the Year wall take place Sunday morning. Winners from previous years are Mrs Doug Bowser, Mrs Lewis Thomas, and Mrs Janet Coy. These ladies will not be eligible for nomination The Mother of the Year award, along with other special awards will be presented in the evening service. The youngest mother, the oldest mother, and the mother with the most children present in the service will be honored
Junior Troop 178 Works n Badges Members of junior troop 178 worked on requirements for badges Monday afternoon. The sixth grade girls visited the Cadets to observe, and incoming third grade Brownies will visit troop 178 next week. -NW—BROWNIE TROOP 101 HONORS LEADERS Brownie troop 101 leaders Mrs. Larry Reed, Mrs. Gilbert Baumleb, Mrs. George Sliger, and Mrs. Glenn Vanator were honored Monday afternoon with a surprise party at the home of Mrs. David Delp, The program was planned and presented by the Brownies, who also presented each leader with a lovely corsage. A point of interest was a checklist by each Brownie recalling her impressions of the past year. Refreshments consisted of an elaborately decorated cake, topped with a Brownie figurine, and punch. Mrs. Delp was assisted by Mrs. Vernon Zurcher and Mrs. Robert Garr. -NWBROWNIE TROOP 63 TAPES ACTIVITIES Mrs. James Joyce, troop leader, tape recorded the activities of the Browiiies as they congregated for their meeting Monday afternoon. This was played for Mrs. Ledru Gray, service unit chairman, much to the surprise of the girls. A hike was enjoyed later. —NW—GRANDPARENTS OF NEW BABY GIRL Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Vandersaul. r 6 Columbia City, are the parents of a baby girl, Jerilyn Dee. bom at 11:57 am., April 29, in the Whitley County hospital, Columbia City. The little girl weighed eight pounds, eight ounces, and was 20G inches long. Grandparents of the new arrival are Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Richard Lundy. North W’ebster. and Mr. and Mrs. Marion Vandersaul. r 6 Columbia City. The maternal great grandfather is Palmer Hannum of Greene county. 14 YEARS AGO. MAY 3, 1956 Mr. and Mrs. Harold Morris of Dewart Lake announce the engagement of their daughter. Miss Nova Jean, to Kenneth Ryman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ryman, of near Milford. Three hundred and forty-seven new cases of tuberculosis have been reported in Indiana in the first 12 weeks of this year. Mrs. Roy Teeple and Mrs. Eugene Felkner were in Centreville, Mich., Sunday. They visited Mrs. Lou Crowl, who was celebrating her 89th birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wilson and daughters entertained Mr. and Mrs, Melvin Morningstar and sons of Elkhart and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Wilson at dinner Saturday evening. Harold Wilson and his twin sister. Mrs. Morningstar, celebrated their birthdays. Lightning struck the Russell K. Scott home on James street at aJody Laßay, 10, Janette Kae. 3. and Jamie Lee, 20 months. Mrs. Vandersaul is the former Janice Dee Lundy. She graduated from North Webster in 1958. —NW—COMMUNITY NEWS Glenn Kunce remains a patient at the Lutheran hospital in Fort Wayne. Royal Kline of South Bend spent Sunday with Rev. and Mrs J. L. Kline, and the Orv a Millers. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Barrett visited the Dick Kistlers at Churbusco Sunday evening. Mrs. Stanley Baugher is quite ill at her home. Mr. and Mrs Andy Stefoff. of Mishawaka, were at their Epworth Forest home last week end. Bob Arnett is a patient at the Murphy Medical Center in W’arsaw. Bob was involved in an automobile accident during the week end. The Youth Fellowship groups from the North Webster and Milford Church of the Brethren met Sundav evening with the Syracuse group for an hour of discussion and socializing.

Mrs. Parrett could not identify the exotic blossoms but intends to contact Henry Beer, local florist, for this information. 24 YEARS AGO, MAY 2, 1946 A disastrous fire at the Firestone farm, about three miles east of Milford on the Syracuse road, utterly destroyed a large bank bam. a corn crib filled with corn and a shed, last Saturday afternoon at about 1 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. Levi Beer announce the arrival of an eight pound son, Joseph Frank, born at 1 o’clock Friday afternoon, April 26. in the Goshen hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Cletus S. Myers and son Chuck and Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Miller left for Washington, D. C., last Thursday to be guests of Mr. Myers’ sister, Mrs. Harry Hover. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Haney of Hastings and Mr. and Mrs. Paid Haney of Elkhart spent the week end in Chicago. Sgt. Don Baumgartner of Cissna Park. 111., formerly of Milford, arrived at his home last week from Germany where he was assigned to the American armed forces. Miss Elsie Tusing and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kasper and daughter have gone to Florida to spend a few weeks with Mr. Kasper’s mother, whose home is in Florida. 30 YEARS AGO. MAY 2, 1940 On Friday of last week, Eugene W. Felkner, Milford postmaster, was recommended for reappointment when President Roosevelt sent his name along with several others to the senate for confirma-
tion. Mr. and Mrs. Milton Hiatt and daughter Rosalie left Milford Saturday to take up their residence in Muncie where Mr. Hiatt, Milford teacher, will attend Ball State Teachers' college during the summer months. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Mock are the parents of a daughter. Dolores Ann, born at their home near Milford, on April 24. Misses Esther and Anna Beer of Elkhart spent Friday evening with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Beer, and also attended the commencement exercises of the Milford high school. It snowed in Milford Wednesday morning, May 1, and the temperature dropped accordingly. Worth Jackson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Jackson, was surprised last Thursday evening at a birthday party given in his honor at the home of his parents for his 16th birthday. Troup passed away at 9 o’clock Sunday evening at her home five miles northeast of Warsaw. She was an aunt of Mrs. A. P. Bowers of Milford. Janice Burch, 14-year-old daughter of Mrs. Roscoe Burch of Dowagiac, Mich., a former compositor in this office, has been placed on the news staff of the Dowagiac high school newspaper. Miss Burch is a niece of Mrs. C. A. Sparklin and a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Grove of Dowagiac, former residents of Milford.
