REMEMBERWHEN IT HAPPENED IN SYRACUSE One Year Ago About 50 town and county officials from a four-county area making up the Elkhart river basin met at Wawasee high school Monday night to hear discussions on the conservation of the natural water supply in this 690 mile area. Counties involved are Kosciusko. Noble, Elkhart and Lagrange. Mike Bauer of Michigan City, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. S.A. Bauer, is a member of a 100-voice mixed group at Miami university who will be touring Europe this summer with the Cincinnati symphony orchestra. Members of the SyracuseWawasee Garden club planted three Pyramid Arbor Vita bushes at the west end of the Syracuse cemetery Friday marking Arbor Day. Members of the Syracuse fire department were guests at a dinner given by the Turkey Creek senior citizens Thursday night. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Snellenberger have returned to their r 2 home after spending the winter at Arcadia, Fla. The Ben Juliers are expected home this week from a fivemonth stay in Florida. Five Years Ago Larry Jones received the outstanding athlete award during the all sport’s banquet Wednesday in the Syracuse high school cafeteria. Turkey Creek Township Parent Teachers Association officers elected at the Tuesday night meeting were: President. Mrs. Jack Carr; vice president, Mrs. Max Workman; secretary. Mrs. Jan Rinker and treasurer. Miss Patricia Forrester. Members of the National Honor Society at Syracuse raised a gross of $230 at a Bessie Wolfe benefit chili supper Saturday night. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rehrer have returned from the winter in California. Tom Clayion. Syracuse senior, has received a $650 scholarship from Purdue: plus a $2,000 scholarship on April 6 from Syracuse-Wawasee Education, Inc. The annual Weatherhead dance was held Saturday at North Webster with music by The Beachcombers. Ten Years Ago Mrs. Joe Rapp, first grade teacher in the Syracuse schools for the past 33 years, will retire at the close of this school year. She will be completing 38 years of service to the public schools of this state. Dick Beck, head coach at Syracuse high school since 1956, has resigned. The Syracuse Newcomers club held their style show in the Syracuse high school auditorium on April 20. Jesse Mitchell is reported improving at his home from a

Richard Ruple, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morton Ruple of Lake Wawasee, was killed in action in Germany on April 5 according to a telegram received by his parents. R. Leon Connolly was elected president of the Syracuse high school alumni association Saturday night. Also, Hilary Bachman, vice president; Lavon Symensma, secretary and Lois Davis, treasurer. Mrs. Edith Ronketti is employed in the offices of the Liberty Coach Co. Pfc. Gerald Carwile, Jr., a technician at Asburn General hospital, McKinney, Texas, was married April 4 to Miss Dorothy Stewart. C.C. Bachman and son Charles, Jr., have returned from St. Petersburg. Fla. Mrs. John Meek is spending two weeks in Warsaw with her sister-in-law. Mrs. Edward Meek. Sgt. Joseph W. Kindig has been transferred to Fort Ord, Calif. Forty-Five Years Ago William Colwell. 80, died at the home of a son. George. He was ill with a heart disease. The 17th annual reception of alumni of Syracuse high school will be held in May at The Sign of the Kettle. Mrs. Lucy Butt has just completed school bf census of the town of Syracuse and lists 145 boys and 122 girls .between the ages of 6 and 21. She also lists 366 male voters. Miss Henrietta Brunjes eqjoyed her first seasonal plunge into Lake Wawasee Saturday. She said the water was fine but still a little cold. S. F. Fryer of Ligonier has sold the late Betty Younce residence on South Main street to Bert C. Cripe. Dr. Bowser will be doing surgery on Mrs. Judd Searfoss at Goshen hospital.
