Mrs. Forrest (Pearl) Lyons Mrs. Forrest (Pearl ) Lyons, 58. of Leesburg, died at 5:50 a.m. on Thursday. April 16. in the Goshen hospital? She had been in failing health for some time. Born December 19, 1911, at Windfall, she was the daughter of Earl and Emma (Woodard) Pendegrass. On April 17, 1938, Ae Was united in marriage to Mr. Lyons, who survives. She attended the Leesburg United Methodist church and was a member of the Leesburg Order of Eastern Star. She had served 'as Leesburg correspondent for Hie Mail-Journal* In addition to her husband she is survived by two sons, William E. Lyons, Washington. D. C., and Charles Lyons of Leesburg. Services were conducted Sunday in a Warsaw funeral home and burial was in the Leesburg cemetery. Mrs. Cleon Strombeck Mullens Graveside services ■were conducted at North Webster by Rev. Lewis Thomas for Mrs. Cleon Strombeck Mullens. 86. of San Francisco. Calif. Mrs Mullens left the North Webster area 40 years ago. Burial was in the North Webster cemetery. Survivors include a son and a daughter, both living in !San Francisco. Junes Ritter Funeral services were held Sunday at the Syracuse Church of the Brethren for James Ritter. 39. of 612 Baltimore St.. Syracuse He passed away suddenly Thursday afternoon while at workat the Svracuse Rubber Co. Mr. Ritter was born on February 26.1931, a son of Walter and Severa Laura (Jarrett) Ritter and lived in the Syracuse community most of his life He was a member of the Syracuse Church of the Brethren. American Legion Post 223 at Syracuse, Syracuse civil defense and VFW at Goshen Survivors include the mother with whom he resided; a brother Walter D. Ritter and a sister. Brief graveside services and interment were in the Gardens of Memory cemetery at Muncie Saturday. Mr. Newby died at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, in the Veterans Administration hospital in Indianapolis of complications following an illness of the past year and a half. He was born at Lapel July 3, 1927, to Edwin and Maible (WQiitehead» Newi>y. He resided in Muncie until 12 years ago when he moved to the North Webster area. He was an employee of the Syracuse Rubber Company. He was united in marriage February’ 10. 1947. to the former. Annabelle Me ” Colley, who survives. The deceased was a member of the Saint Francis church and a veteran of World War 11. Other survivors are a daughter, Mary Margaret, and a son. Willis Michael, both at home: his father, Edwin Newby, and step-mother, of Noblesville; one brother and four sisters, whose addresses are hot known as the children were separated when very young. Merl M. Keck Merl M. Keck, 58, New Paris, son of Mrs. Jesse Keck, Leesburg, suffered a fatal heart attack at about 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, at the residence of Rev. Jesse Hoover, US 33 at CR 40. He was stricken while helping to cut down a small tree Mr. Keck was bom in Union township November 4. 1911, to Jesse and Ida May Keck. On April 20. 1935. he married Verda Stouder, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Larry and Merl, Jr., both of New Pans, and Donhld. Kankakee. 11l ; a daughter. Mrs. Pat (Alice' Adams. Goshen: a foster daughter, Mrs J. P. 'Linda) Smith, Schaumburg, HL: two brothers. Paul, Arcadia. Calif. and Alfred, New Paris; three sisters, Mrs. Wilbur Shoup. Edwardsburg. Mich., Mrs. Mervin Stouder. New Paris, and Mrs. Willard Hawley, Bristol; and nine grandchildren. Services were held Saturday in the New Paris funeral home and burial was in Union Center cemetery. George M. Hurt, Sr. Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. April 21, for George M. Hurt. Sr . 67. of r 1 Leesburg, in a Lebanon funeral home. Rev. John Weeks, pastor of the North Webster United Methodist church, officiated at the final rites. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery at Lebanon. Death occurred at 9:45 a m. Saturday in the Goshen hospital from complications. He had been ill since October. Mr. Hurt was bom February 2. 1903. at Lebanon to Harry and

Winifred (Mclntyre) Hurt. He had lived in the North Webster area since 1959, moving from Anderson. In 1943 he was united in marriage in Chicago with Margaret Drain, who survives. He was retired from the retail shoe business and was a member of the United Methodist church at Anderson. Survivors in addition to the widow include three sons, George, Jr., Indianapolis, Jack, Cincinnati. Ohio, and Tom. at home; one daughter, Mrs. Floyd (Henrietta) Shafee. Indianapolis; nine grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Ernest (Cecile) Richmann, r 1 Leesburg; and three nephews. Mrs. Roy Sarjent Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Harris funeral home in Syarcuse for Mrs. Roy (Zella» Sarjent, 67, 424 Parkway Drive, Syracuse. She passed away of complications at 8:30 a.m. Monday in Miller's Merry Manor, Warsaw, following an illness of several years. Born September 23, 1902, in Albion, she was a daughter of Jacob and Myrtle (Master) Bowser and lived in the Benton-Syracuse areas most of her life. Her first husband, Chancy Coy, preceded her in decth in 1943. She married Mr. Sarjent and he died in 1968. Mrs. Sarjent was a member of the United Methodist church at Benton, a charter member of the Syracuse American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the Benton Home Economics club and Benton Community association. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Tim (Elaine) Darr and a son, Harry Coy, both of Syracuse; six granddaughters; one grandson; and one sister. Miss Ethel Bowser, Syracuse. Two brothers, one sister, and one son preceded her in death. Rev. Chester Carpenter and Rev. Elmer Regier will officiate and burial will be in the Syracuse cemetery. Mr*. Cleon Mullen Graveside services were held at 10 a m Monday at North Webster cemetery for Mrs. Cleon Strombeck Mullen. 86, formerly of North Webster. She passed away at San Francisco, Calif., where she resided. Henry Doty Henry Doty, 64. r 1 Milford, died at 3 a.m. Monday at the Riley Convalescent home at Goshen, where he had been a patient for six weeks. Mr. Doty was bom in Milford on February 22, 1906. the son of Alonzo and Cora (Hoffman) Doty. He resided on a farm near Milford all of his life and never married. Surviving are four brothers, Harry and Dwight, both of Milford, George of Syracuse, and Ray of Fond du Lac. Wis.; and two sisters, Mrs. Lulu Felkner, Milford, and Mrs. Harold (Dorothy) Young. Peru. Four sisters preceded him in death. Services will be held today (Wednesday) at 1:30 p.m. at the Mishler funeral home and burial in the Milford cemetery. Roscoe V. White Services will be held at Harris funeral home in Syracuse at 1 p.m Saturday for Roscoe White, 65. of Fostoria. O. He passed away at 4 a.m. this morning. Frank Kline Funeral services were held April 4 for Frank Kline, 86, of Grand Rapids. Bom in Milford on November 8, 1883, he moved to Itasca county in 1920 where he worked for the Great Northern railway. He is survived by his wife, Ida, Grand Rapids; two daughters, two sons, 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Neeley of Bristol and a brother, Nansen of Fort Wayne. A son preceded him in death. Stoelting of Dewart Lake remains a patient at Goshen hospital where she underwent surgery April 13 for a pin in her hip following a break from a fall in her home. Court News Suits Dismissed The following suits have been dismissed from Kosciusko circuit and superior courts on motions filed by the plaintiffs: John VanCuren, doing business as Van Curen Electric, Warsaw vs Frances Marie D. Klare, r 1 Leesburg, complaint to foreclose a mechanic’s lien. Promissory Note State Bank of Syracuse has filed a complaint on promissory note suit in Kosciusko circuit court against Mary E. Liniger, Milford. The plaintiff seeks a judgment in the amount of $4,100. Judgment Made Peoples State Bank, of Leesburg, has been awarded a judgment in the amount of $2,026.66 in Kosciusko superior court on a complaint on promissory note suit filed against Eunice I. Greider Lowe, Ligonier. A mortgage on real estate described as 2.51 acres in Tippecanoe township was also ordered foreclosed and the property is to be sold to satisfy the judgment. Suspend License Delbert R. Fuller, 26, of jr 1 North Webster has his driver license suspended according to the latest report from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles in Indianapolis. GUEST SPEAKERS FOR ROTARY CLUB Speaker for the Tuesday meeting of the SyracuseWawasee Rotary meeting was Howard Wilson, executive director of the Cardinal Center at Warsaw. He told of how the carter came into existance a few years ago with a purpose of building a productive life for retarded children within Kosciusko county. Supported by taxes and donations, the Lakeland area has supplied many applicants. He spoke of several cases of members and their phenominal development with a few years of training. Thus, being absorbed into industries within the county and doing work on assembly lines with good incomes. The earned income from work performed by Cardinal retarded students last year amounted to $22,500. Wilson has chosen a field of work to which he has become dedicated and his efforts have been realized with a successfully operated institution of learning in which retarded youngsters of the county are given the chance to become happy useful citizens. Mrs. Joseph Beres of Milford is the baby’s paternal grandmother. Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Walter Stahl of Goshen. DIERKS, Beth Ann Mr. and Mrs. Philip Dierks of Sidney are the parents of a daughter born at 5:03 p.m. Thursday, April 16, in Whitley County hospital. The little girl was named Beth Ann. Syracuse Lions To Celebrate 20th Anniversary The regular meeting of the Syracuse Lions club was held on April 15 with an interesting and informative program by Gene Glod, director of student affairs at the South Bend campus of the Indiana Vocational-Technical college. Mr. Glod stated that I.V. Tech began its existance in 1961 when the general assembly set up a commission to investigate the feasibility of a vocationaltechnical college system for Indiana. In 1963. a law established I.V. Tech and money was appropriated for planning. I.V.Tech opened it’s doors to students in 1968. Offerings include technical 2-year degrees, vocational diplomas for 1-year programs, and continuing education for further training or retraining. An interesting informal question and answer period followed Mr. Glod’s presentation. The Syracuse Lions will be 20 years young in May. The president has appointed a special committee of Noble Blocker, Deloss Weaver and Max Brower to plan a celebration for this milestone of community service. Lions Elect Syracuse Lions elected officers for the 1970-71 Lion year during a special business session. NUMEROUS FIRE RUNS IN PAST WEEK Numerous fire runs were made during the past week by Syracuse fire department and first aid members. Response was made for a call at 1:22 Thursday at Syracuse Rubber company for James Ritter who was pronounced dead. A grass fire was extinguished at Regent mobile homes at 11:53 a.m. Friday and a bathroom fire with minor damage at the Eldon Ummel home on North Shore drive, Syracuse Lake, at 2:40 p.m. A test call was held for department members at 6:02 p.m. Friday. A 9:55 a.m. grass fire was extinguished near the railroad and Turtle Bay trailer park at the south edge of Syracuse followed by a grass fire beyond the Bonnie Brae addition south of town at 12:35. A car fire was extinguished at 1:26 p in. Saturday when a car driven by Wayne Coy, Jr., of Syracuse taught fire after it backfired at 600 south Huntington. Treatment was refused following a first aid call at 1:10 p.m. Sunday at the Arnold Hall home south of Syracuse. Guest Speaker For Intermediate Mothers The Svracuse Intermediate Mothers club met Monday night at the home of Mrs. F.A. Rhoades with 20 members and two guests Miss Jayne Poynter and Mrs. Jack Francis. Miss Poynter spoke on her experiences as a student and teacher while in Nicaragua as a Goshen college student.
