Rick Bowen Signed As Pierceton Head Coach

Rick Bowen, 25-year-old freshman basketball coach at North Wood high school (Nappanee and Wakarusa), was signed up Monday night as Pierceton’s new varsity coach. The Whitko school board signed Bowen at its regular board meeting to replace Tom Sittier who resigned on March 30 to seek a coaching post in a larger school Coached With Dougherty Bowen, a Bremen native where he played on the high school basketball team, is the son of Indiana Speaker of the House of Representatives and Mrs. Otis Bowen He graduated from Indiana university in 1966 and became freshman coach at Nappanee high school in the 1966-67 school year, and was freshman coach in basketball, football and assistant baseball coach for North Wood during this current year He had an 18-4 record this year Young Bowen served under Keith Dougherty, well known Nappanee coach who is now head coach at Elkhart high school. It is his first varisty coaching post. Served In Viet Nam He served in the U.S. Army two years and saw action irv the medics with the 9th Infantry Division in Viet Nam where he was awarded the combat medical badge and Bronze Star He is married to the former Sandra Todd Yellow Jackets Open Track Season Syracuse junior high school initiates its 1970 track season this week by playing host to West Noble and North Webster on Tuesday evening On Thursday of this week, the Yellow Jackets will travel to South Whitley for a dual meet. ► Coach Ralph Bushong has been working his track squad very hard 'or the past few weeks in preparing for the 1970 track season. HOLE LN ONE AT WAWASEE Don Byrd, pro-owner of. the Wawasee Golf club, reports a hole in one at the course over the week end. Merril Postma of New Paris hit the first hole in one of the season while golfing with his son, Allen, and Leonard Jones of Benton and his son, Calvin. The shot was on the 200 yard ninth hole. Postma used a driver. Wawasee Eighth In Goshen Relays Wawasee high school won eighth {dace honors with 20 points at the class B Goshen relays held over the week end The class B events were won by DeKalb with 56 points. North Woe J was second with 43. followed by Concord, Plymouth. Rochester. Jimtown and Garrett. La Ville and Bremen also finished with 20 points each. Wawasee’s.Dave Elliott placed fourth in the 880 run. The school also placed second in the sprint relay, third in the sprint medley and fourth in the 880 relay. COMMISSIONED — Thomas J. Moore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell J. Moore of r 1 Leesburg has been commissioned a second lieutenant in the V.S. air force upon graduation from officer training school <OTS) at Lackland AFB. Tex. The lieutenant, selected for OTS through competitive examination, is being assigned to Laredo AFB. Tex., for pilot training. Lieutenant Moore, a 1965 graduate of North Webster high school, received his B.S. degree in 1969 from Bail State university. Muncie, and is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. School Board To Attend PTA Meetings The board of school trustees of the Lakeland Community School Corporation has been invited by the Parent-Teachers organizations in the district to project the future building needs of the Lakeland Community schools. The meetings will begin at 7:30 pm. and are scheduled as follows: Monday. April 27, at North Webster school; Tuesday, April 28. at Milford elementary school; and Thursday. Thornburg has been promoted from patrolman with the Elkhart county police department to detective sergeant. D-Sgt. Thornburg served on the Elkhart county sheriff’s reserves from February 15, 1968. to October 15 at which time he went on as a regular with the police department. He started as a turnkey and continued there until his promotion to road status as a patrolman January 1,1969. While serving as a patrolman, he was selected to attend the Law Enforcement Academy on the Indiana University campus, graduating from the academy as 12th in his class on January 31 of this year. A Syracuse high school graduate in the class of 1958. he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Thornburg of r 2 Syracuse. He resides at New Paris with his wife, the former Sherrill Tarman of New Paris and their three daughters. Kosciusko Association of Churches Hold Annual Meeting At Warsaw

The Kosciusko county association of churches held its annual meeting of the assembly on Tuesday, April 21, at 6:30 p.m. in a Warsaw restaurant. The association is a voluntary fellowship of area churches dedicated to help each other in effective ministry to the county. The annual assembly was attended by clergymen and laymen from participating churches along with their spouses and guests. The meeting was presided over by Ed Whitby of Warsaw. He reviewed the activities of the last year and discussed the coming year. Rev. Garrett Phillips of the United Methodist church at Mentone gave a report on the lenten services held at Warsaw at noon each Wednesday during lent. He said 499 people attended the services and the association felt it was a worthwhile project and plans to have such services again next year. The offering from the lenten services was sent to CROP. Workshop Sunday Rev. John Newberg of the Trinity United Methodist church of Warsaw reported the leadership training department of the association is sponsoring a “Communications” workshop for church leaders on Sunday, April 26fr0m3:30t0 8:30p.m. It will be held at the Trinity Methodist church on east Center street in Warsaw. A slight cost includes a light supper. The workshop will provide help in improving communication skills for those adults in area churches who work with either children, youth (teens) or adults. Dr. Donald Joy of Winona Lake will be the instructor for those who work with children. He is concerned with the relationship between home teaching and church teaching. Parents are urged to attend. Rev. Kenneth Sherfick, pastor of Grace Episcopal church in Muncie, will be instructor for youth workers. Rev. Elvin Miller will be the instructor for those who work with adults. Mr. Miller is staff resource specialist in careerdevelopment for the Northern Indiana Conference of the United Methodist church. Anyone interested in improving skills in communications is cordially invited. The workshop should be particularly helpful to church school teachers, parents, youth leaders, church board members and pastors. Elect Officers President Whitby asked Rev. leadership training are still needed. The assembly granted the board of directors permission to fill these two offices as soon as possible. Other members of the board of directors are Rev. Donald Abbey, Trinity United Methodist church, Warsaw; Mrs. Robert Litchenwalter, Saint Anne’s Episcopal church, Warsaw; and Robert Delp, First United Methodist, Warsaw. The president asked for suggestions for future projects the association could undertake. Ideas presented included a children’s department, the housing problems and work with youth on probation or predelinquents. The program was turned over to Rev. Newberg who introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Donald Joy. executive editor of Sunday school curriculum for the Free Methodist Publishing House at Winona Lake. Dr. Joy opened the program by having everyone repeat the 90th Psalm. The topic presented was ‘‘Christian Education and the Future.” He expressed “Hope in the 70’s,” “College Kids Responding to Jesus Christ” and “Hie Star Fixed Ages of Man and the Zodiac in Relation to History.” Dr. Joy closed his presentation by asking all present to repeat the Prayer of Saint Francis. Attending from Milford were Mrs. Doral McFarren, Rev. and Mrs. Chester Bahn, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Hoover. Mrs. McFarren. Rev. Bahn and Mr. Hoover are delegates to the assembly from the Bethel Church of the Brethern at Milford. Leesburg Man Number One Fund Raiser Wayne Hoffer of r 1 Leesburg, has become the number one fund raiser in Kosciusko county according to a survey done by the Thrust ‘7O girl scout fund drive for the expansion of Camp Singing Hills near Middlebury. Hoffer raised SI,OBO from 15 Girl Scout families in Troop 219, according to Max M. Anglin, chairman of troop fathers for the county. Hoffer raised approximately $250 more than his goal and placed far above everyone else thus far. Mrs. Ruth Fuller has returned to her Lake Wawasee home from a winter stay in Florida. ° Burns Van Sickle of Homestead, Fla., has arrived for a visit with his daughter and son-in-law. the Donald Grawcocks, of Syracuse, before continuing his trip to Maine.
