Politics - 1970 Meet Your Candidates
The appointment of FRANK E. SULLIVAN, South Bend, as cochairman for the Citizens for BRADEMAS committee was announced last week by ARTHUR J. DECIO, Elkhart, committee chairman. CONGRESSMAN JEFFERY COHELAN of California was guest of honor, along with Congressman JOHN BRADEMAS at a luncheon for committee members at 12:15 p.m. Friday. About 150 committee members from Elkhart, Kosciusko, Marshall and Saint Joseph counties, which comprise the third Indiana district which Brademas represents, were in attendance. Cohelan. in his sixth term in Congress, is a member of the House Appropriations committee. He is also one of the leaders of the Democratic study group. JOHN K SNYDER, candidate for the Republican nomination to the United States Senate, stated recently “unless we again get a United States Supreme Court which cracks down on crime, we may be approaching the day when a person will fear to leave his home not just at night, but also during the day. The problem of mounting crime in this country has been largely aided by a Supreme Court which has too often favored the criminal over his victim. Figures recently released by the FBI show that of 539 persons involved in police killings. 77 per cent had previously been arrested and 67 per cent previously convicted. Two thirds of these police killers had been granted parole and thirty per cent were on parole or probation at the time of the killing.” Snyder made his remarks in an address to the Anderson Branch of the American Business Women s Association. “. . . Senators like Vance Hartke who oppose the appointment of conservatives to the Supreme Court are only aiding in continue coddling of the repeat criminal. This nation needs a strong Supreme Court, but we'll only get that after we elect a strong U.S. Senate this November,” he said. Indiana Republican state chairman BUENA CHANEY headed a 26 member Indiana GOP delegation to the national Republican leadership conference held in Washington. D.C., April 15-18. The theme of the leadership conference was "Together We Can!” with the four day meeting bringing together party leaders from all sections of the country for a review and discussion of GOP plans for the 1970 elections TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY TWO BEDROOM year round home for rent.
