Robber Os Brazel’s Store Apprehended In One Hour
The alertness of Mrs. Russell (Kate) Brazel assisted in the quick arrest of John Thompson Douglas less than an hour after robbing the Brazel Bait and Tackle Shop, Lake Wawasee, of an estimated S3O to S6O from the cash register. Douglas, 30, of 2810 Muldune ave., Fort Wayne, was taken into custody on state road 205 near the by-pass of U.S. 30 at Columbia City at 2:15 p.m., by the state trooper Hugh Geiger. The Fort Wayne man entered the bait store, around 1:30 Monday afternoon hesitated while Mrs. Brazel waited on a customer and after the customer left, approached the counter at the cash register announcing there was a man in the other Hospital Notes Ronald S. Campbell of Leesburg was admitted to Murphy Medical Center Tuesday. Mabel Martin remains hospitalized at the Elkhart hospital, room 330 Robert Reed is in the hospital at Goshen. Miss Mary J. Brubaker of r 2 Leesburg was dismissed from the Murphy Medical Center Thursday. Raymond Whitridge of r 1 Leesburg was treated in the emergency room of Murphy Medical Center Thursday. Bruce Pierce of r 2 Leesburg was treated in the emergency room of Murphy Medical Center over the week end. Mrs. O. C. Stoelting, Dewart Lake was admitted to Goshen hospital Saturday evening after a fall at her home. Mrs. Stoelting had surgery Monday for a broken leg. She is in room 258. Elmer Rassi r 2 Leesburg arrived home Tuesday from Mayo Clinic. Mrs. Forrest Lyons of Leesburg was admitted to Goshen hospital Monday. Warren Fisher, Jr. of r 1 Milford was admitted to Elkhart hospital Tuesday April 7 following an accident at work. He underwent surgery on Tuesday and again on Saturday. He is in room 372. Gary Rookstool of Syracuse has been admitted to Goshen hospital. Lewis Caskey, r 2 Syracuse, is a patient in Whitley county hospital. Mrs. Edwin Upson of r 1 North Webster has been released from Whitley county hospital. Joey Beezley of North Webster received treatment in the emergency room of MurphyMedical Center on Thursday. Mrs. Sammy Morrison of r 1 North Webster received treatment in the emergency room of Murphy Medical Center on Friday. As Mrs. Brazel left the building by the rear door, authorities reported Douglas helped himself to money from the cash register, leaving by the front entrance. Mrs. Brazel re-entered the store and called authorities giving a description of the getaway auto. Douglas was interrogated in Whitley county by detective Sidney Fish and state trooper Melvin Wall before being transported to Kosciusko county jail at Warsaw. He is being held on $2,000 bond. Syracuse police chief Orville Vanderßeyden assisted at the bait store in the investigation, along with state trooper Barry Black. Medical Center during the week end. Mrs. M. Louise Connolly of Syracuse is reported slightly improved at Goshen hospital where she was readmitted cm April 7. Mrs. Thomas Clutter of North Webster is a patient in MurphyMedical Center. Picklip Run-Away In Milford A 17-year-old run-away from Napoleon. Ohio, was picked up in Milford at 8:50 a.m. today (Wednesday) by Milford police chief Don Drake and deputy sheriff Roger Fellows. She is being held at Warsaw until authorities come from Ohio to return her to that state. Drake received a call at 4:15 p.m. on April 8 from a Mr. Styles, probation officer of Henry county, Ohio, advising him of the girl and of the fact friends said she might be heading for Milford. Drake remembered the girl from a previous visit she had made to Milford. Authorities in Ohio have been notified. School Board Received Report On Adult Education At Wawasee
Members of the Lakeland school board, meeting in regular session Tuesday evening in the administrative offices, received a report from superintendent Don H. Arnold on the adult education courses recently completed. A total of 204 were enrolled. The report showed 23 in ceramics at North Webster. 12 in typing. 15 in tailoring, 13 in intermediate sewing. 13 in beginning sewing, 24 in two beginning sewing classes held in the fall. 11 in modem literature, 12 in art. 20 in women's physical education with an additional 10 in swimming oily, 16 in men’s physical education and 35 in vocational adult farmer classes. Mr. Arnold also reported on the corporation music festival to be held April 24 and of the prekindergarten enrollment that is underway at the present time. Enrollment Up 46 In the guidance report he stated 10 college applications had been filled out during March for a total of 103 and 25 applications for scholarship were sent in for a total of 128. Members of the guidance department have preregistered 821 students for the 1970-71 school year at Wawasee. This is an increase of 46 over the present enrollment. Approval was given for a supplemental service contract for Terry Frank for men’s adult physical education class. The board also approved the use of the auditorium for the Kiwanis travelogue series for 1970-71 as the dates have been cleared with principal Henry Smith. university in respect to student teacher as the agreement extends liability insurance coverage to student teachers while performing under the supervision of the teachers of the Lakeland schools. This has been a policy of the corporation in the past. The recommendations of curriculum coordinator John Naab for the adoption of math textbooks to be used for a period of five years in the corporation were accepted. Mr. Arnold stated Naab and his committee had been working with the state’s list since December in order to make the best selection. Grades onefive will use an Addison Wesley book, this is the same as is currently being used, and grades six-eight will change to Houghton-Mifflin. Permission was granted on a request to advertise for temporary loan warrants to serve as additional monies to be used as operating capital until such time as money becomes available from tax sources. tax receipts which may be delayed due to the late setting of a tax rate and mailing of tax statements. Monies which normally are available May 1, may not be available until July or August. Marion Lantz. business manager and corporation treasurer, stated the state hearing- was set for today (Wednesday). When .asked how much money would be needed he said he couldn’t tell until after the hearing but wanted the board to be aware of the situation and wanted their permission to proceed if it became necessary to follow this procedure. The board also gave permission to proceed with the grading and leveling of eight acres of land for athletic and physical education purposes at Wawasee high school. Phend and Brown will be contracted to do the work for $1,500. The land is directly w r est of the football field and is owned by the school corporation. It has been farmed in the past. Three North Webster women were present and met with the board in executive session following the meeting in regards to problems at the school in their town.
