Residents who live along old road 13, extending south from the Pickwick Road at the south edge of Syracuse, are becoming increasingly vocal about a dumping area on the east side of that road. With pollution fast becoming a popular topic of conversation, these residents are buttonholing anyone who will listen about conditions at what they call “the dump.” Inasmuch as this area is not in the town, those residents will have to look to the township trustee or the board of county commissioners to air their grievances. • • • The Smith-Walbridge Camp is nearing another season, has already sent out their literature to schools across the country. A beautiful piece arrived at our desk this week, almost makes us want to join the summer camp. • ♦ • Area residents who watched the unfolding mystery of the solution t<> the strangulation slaying of pretty Lillie Mae Ritchie at her I >ewart Lake home on November 6 were surprised to see the entire story written up in the May issue of “Official Detective Stories," on sale in most newsstands. It began on page 26 and was written by Burt Oglesby, special investigator for the magazine. Its title was “Strangled Indiana Divorcee Was Nude. But Was It A Sex Crime.” A sequel to this story is that Jeffrey Wayne McComsey, a 21-year-old Lancaster. Pa., youth was

(See full story on page 1, this issue.) • • • Sentiments on annexation of the three tracts around Syracuse continue to run deep. A recent remark in a local Case following last Wednesday night’s public meeting at which a stale expert spoke at length on soil composition of the area, was that the chamber cf commerce was “carrying out a well planned filibuster.” • • • Seems Syracuse is definitely patriotic: Millie Savage at ffie bank was seen leaving with an unusual item in hand, a centerpiece creation in the red, white and blue decor for the Fourth of July theme. Created by Millie and Joan, we are informed it took first place in a judging when exhibited at a grange meeting on Tuesday night. Leila Connolly of the NIPSCo contributed to the patriotic theme in her attire last Wednesday in red. white and blue. • • • I-ocal persons, particularly children, are reminded ducks in the area are now nesting and should not be disturbed. Many nests, some with eggs and some without, have been located at the lake edge, channels and creek area of the town. A warning has been issued in regard to high fines and a federal offense if person or persons are caught molesting or shooting ducks or molesting their nests. Several ducks have been found dead, crippled and one blinded of wounds from guns. • * - • Whether it be spring or physical fitness time.
