facts about ‘OUR TOWN’ Milford, Ind. By JERI SEELY Our photos of the week are of two stately homes in Our Town. Most of our readers will recognize them immediately. The top photo is the Groves home and was occupied by Miss Martha Groves until she moved to Goshen some time ago. The bottom photo is the home of Mr. and Mrs. K. D. Jessop. The pictures are from the collection of Sidney Reid of Chicago. a former resident of Our Town. According to Mr. Reid’s records, the W. E. Groves home dates to 1875 and the Higbee residence (the Jessop home) dates back to pioneer days, being built by Dr. Higbee, whose son later became a prominent banker in Our Town. Bob Higbee of San Francisco is the grandson of Mr. Higbee, the banker. According to Mr. Reid’s notes, two officers of the Civil War were Col. McLaughlin, father of the late Miss Maude McLaughlin. and Capt. Jack North, who built two beautiful homes—one on Main street, one block south of The M-J office (notice the brick, as it was imported and LEGALS notice to the taxpayers of KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, INDIANA: Notice 5 hereby given to the taxpayers of Kosciusko County, Indiana, that the State Board ot Tax Commissioners will conduct a public hear ng in the County Auditor s Os lice. is long and narrow) and the other was south ctf the creek, also in a southern mode. We thank Mr. Reid and others who contribute bits of Milford’s history to this column. Speaking of Mr. Reid, we received a letter from him recently which named several of the basketball players in the recent 1917 photo we ran. Edwin Neff, who was shown in the picture, was Sidney Reid's uncle. ■Mr. Reid also stated he enjoyed the facts about Milford that we publish in this column. Thank you again, Mr. Reid. Help! The photo of the train wreck that we ran recently (the one with the three unidentified boys' was mailed to Connecticut and was dated October 1, 1912. Yet, all other information we have on this wreck (gathered previously! states the wreck occurred on Monday, April 12, 1915. I'm not the smartest person in the world, but even I know you can’t mail a postcard in 1912 with a picture that was taken in 1915. We’re just z sorry that we didn't catch this before. Can anyone help? ♦ ♦ ♦ This seems to be the week for Milford history’. Darrell Orn and Carl Duncan tell us the shop area (shown in last week’s picture) was located in the present home economics room while the home ec room at that time was across the hall where the music room is now found. « « * If you are a resident of Waubee lake or interested in the lake, don’t forget Saturday morning is the date set by the Waubee Lake Property Owners association for TOO LATE TO CLASSIFY WILL BABYSIT DAYS: Carol Schlabach.
