B^Z TO THE EDITOR
A Thought On Annexation
Dear Editor: May I please use this means for expressing a few thoughts relative to the proposed annexation of certain areas to the town of Syracuse To lead off in a rather minor key. it is my conviction that the annexation plan is the brainchild of a rather small group of selfappointed, and annointed. amateur ecologists and civic planners that do not even represent a consenus within their own organization. Furthermore, the Town Board has been unfaithful to its existing citizenry by meekly abdicating its power and responsibility, and accepting a plan before its scope was fully known. This proposed annexation will prove to be a burden to both the existing citizens of Syracuse and to the many others who will become citizens under protest. As an indication of good faith, it would be appropriate to extend to all households within the present Syracuse limits, the same facilities that we are promised, within three years. And I am sure they are paying, and have paid for years, the city tax rate. Unfortunately, people often equate any action with progress, and growth with civic improvement. In logic, a true major premise is essential to a correct conclusion. Let us accept growth as new industry, more people, larger schools and more traffic, and as a sign of this civic improvement To carry this out step by step, naturally Goshen would surpass

1970 Is A 'Must’ Year For Indiana Democrats
EVERY YEAR is important to a politician, but 1970 has particular significance to the Democrat party. The Republicans could gain control of the U.S. Senate bya gain of seven seats. Thirty-five seats are at stake in the forthcoming election and 25 of them are held now by Democrats. They were carried in by landslides of 1958 and 1964. Were the Republicans to win it would start a cycle of Senate control for the next 12 years, history indicates. Control of the House will be more difficult for the Republicans. The G.O.P. needs 30 seats to pick up House control and are not too optimistic that it can be done this year. Os major importance are 35 gubernatorial and state legislature races run this year. Most states will reapportion their
Syracuse, and Elkhart would have it all over Goshen. South Bend would accordingly be a better place to live than Elkhart and certainly Gary over South Bend. Who in his right mind would live in Gary with Chicago so near by. And after all it is only an hour by jet to New York. Who would want to live in quiet little towns such as Syracuse, and miss all the advantages of poverty, built in welfare, racial strife, crime in the streets, air pollution and all the other good things so readily available in the cities. There are presently more industrial jobs in the Syracuse area than workers to fill them. If in doubt, please station yourself at the South. West and North extremes of town and observe the non-residents coming in to work. They far out number our residents leaving to work in other near by towns. To tie in the very limited lake and near lake areas under consideration. with the very real problem of water pollution, is so ridiculous as to be laughable. For a conservationist living on the far reaches of Lake Wawasee, to be aghast at the terrible pollution coming from such areas as North Shore Drive and Hunnicutt Park, takes a bit of imagination. Thanks for the use of the hall. J. D. Shewmon Steve and Kathy McFarren, Milford, spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Richard Smolek and children at Avilla.
congressional districts and their state legislatures on the 1970 census figures. Governors have veto powers over such plans. Republicans enter the campaign in good financial shape on the National Level. Their war chest is now over $8 million dollars, equivalent to the debt of the Democrat party. The G.O.P. forsees a sll million war chest by time of election. The party has depended on a few big donations until the Goldwater for President campaign. A direct mail campaign brought in $3 million last year. About 80 per cent of Republican funds are less than SIOO each. " The Democrat National Committee however faces major money problems, including the $8.5 million debt. Fund raising efforts have not been successful to date. A major effort currently raised only $400,000 of the $1 to $2 million
County Thrust Campaign Set To Open April 8 The Thrust *7O campaign for contributions to expand the Girl Scouts camp near Middlebury will formally open at a dinner Wednesday evening, April 8, in the Rainbow Room of the Westminster Hotel. The announcement was made by Charles V. Yeager, chairman of the Thrust ’7O drive for Kosciusko county. Yeager said that he hoped that advance pledges of support could be announced at that time.. “We’ve received some indications of interest.” he said, ‘‘but as of this moment I can’t make any firm statement,” He said that the campaign for subscriptions from fathers of Girl Scouts began the week before. ‘‘Max Anglin is in charge of that aspect of the campaign and he's got a tremendous challenge before him.” Yeager said. “Max must organize a team of men who need to visit every Girl Scout family in the county if the campaign is to succeed. “The part of the campaign that will require the maximum resourcefulness, however, is that undertaken by Russell Komen.” Komen, is chairman of the Major Firms section. “Komen is in the final stages of opening up his part of the drive,” Yeager said. “It requires a visit to the 60 leading companies in the county to obtain gifts from $1,250 to SIO,OOO. “Russ has worked very hard at this and I expect he’ll begin the campaign when he recruits his last volunteer worker.” Lawrence J. Castaldi, is chairman of the special gifts campaign which is seeking contributions of S2OO annually from executives. Yeager said that the Girl Scouts are seeking a total of $570,000 from the four counties which comprise the Lakeland Council. The largest amount,
hoped. About 1,100 gathered at the Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach for a SIOO a plate dinner to hear Comedian Don Rickels and Sammy Davis, Jr. The plan called for piping the dinner program over closed circuit televison to cities nationwide. It was to be a 50-50 take with the National Committee. It worked only in Philadelphis, Charlotte,* N.C., and Florence. S.C. Localities were not warm to the /idea of dividing funds with National, when they were in process of rebuilding their campaigns locally. National leadership of the Democratic party is divided. The firm, yet unpopular stand of President Lyndon B. Johnson, caused him to retire. The party is still wearing the “black eye” of the Chicago national convention, that left a $700,000 deficit. What happened there is under investigation and Federal court
$300,000 will be raised in Elkhart county. “Kosciusko county has a goal of $109,296.” he said, which was arrived at after much soulsearching. We tried to find the fairest, most equitable way of sharing the cost among the four geographic groups and when the other three counties agreed that they had an equitable quota, those of us on the Girl Scout Board of Directors from Warsaw acknowledged that our quota was evenly balanced.” Cotton will not “pill up.”
Why AMIBEN is todays No.l soybean herbicide |WI ME tMfIKBKI WEED KHLHI J a somjwToSrw wub =======4ll' o. Because it gives you, in your choke of liquid concentrate or granules, the broadest range weed and grass control on the market. Other soybean herbicides are essentially grass killers. AMIBEN'* preemergence weedkiller not only controls a full range of * grasses but also, as a bonus, controls a full b range of broadleaf weeds. In fact, Amiben controls more grassy weeds and more broadleaf weeds than any competitive p chemical you can buy. Amiben gives you these advantages with safety to your crop (even in wet weather), safety to adjacent crops and to crops you may plant on the same ground next year. Other soybean herbicides may perform well within their own limits, but they are i no match for Amiben...the nearest thing to a perfect soybean weed and grass killer that science has yet come up with. trial in the Windy City. Edward (Ted) Kennedy, a bright star in the national Democrat firmament, is inhibited by the Chappaquiddick incident. Majority Senate Leader, Mike Mansfield, is the reverse of the old style partisan. He walks carefully between the powerful party members who have presidential aspirations. Among these are George McGovern of South Dakota, Harold Hughes of lowa, and Hubert Humphrey. John McCormack, House leader, is 78 years old. Those who want to unseat him, say he is out of touch with the younger generation. With debt, disheartened, disillusioned, Democrats are searching for a new broom to rebuild from the . ground up. Plan.” Successfully backed by the President the plan required hiring a quota of blacks on all Federal jobs of $500,000 or more. However, it looks like good-bye this session to Bayh’s constitutional amendment providing for direct popular election of President. Bayh tried to blast the popular election amendment out of Senate Judiciary committee of which he is a member. He tried this by linking it with an early senate vote on nomination of Judge Harold Carswell to the U.S. Supreme Court. The House passed a bill for direct popular election of Presidents. Bayh’s amendment, and there are several such bills, will likely not reach Senate floor before April, Washington newsmen believe. It is doubtful, as Bayh’s amendment support is ebbing, that he could muster two-third vote, were it to come before the Senate today.
