Junior High Wrestling Tourney Held At Wawasee March 12-13

The second annual Lakeland Community School Corporation junior high wrestling invitational was held at Wawasee high school on Thursday and Friday, March 12 and 13 Members of the high school wrestling squad sponsored the tourney with members of the squad also serving as coaches at the corporation s junior high schools Coaches at Milford were Dave Baumgartner. Roger Korenstra and Bill Richardson. Coaches at North Webster were Al Butt, Roger Butt and Chip Dyp. Coaches at Syracuse were Steve Cobum, Jay deSomer and Jim Marlette Syracuse Wins The boys from Syracuse won the tournament with a total of 121 points Milford was second with 101 and North Webster third with 39 In the 81 pound class Steve Pippenger of Milford placed first, Mark Wilkie of North Webster was second and Dan Weight of North Webster was third In the 95 pound class it was Scott Anderson of Syracuse first. Joe Heath Is Wawasee Prep Banquet Speaker Joe Heath, the head basketball coach of Lafayette Jeff high school, will be guest speaker at Wawasee Prep’s 1969-70 basketball awards dinner, to be held this Sunday, March 22, in the school cafeteria. He has been head coach of Lafayette Jeff for three years. During that time, his teams have won three sectionals and three regionals. His 1969-70 team was beaten this past Saturday in semi-state play by No. 1 ranked East Chicago Roosevelt, 56-54. At the dinner, varsity letters will be awarded to players and managers who have qualified. The most valuable player awards will be given to the freshman, junior varsity, and varsity players selected for this honor by their teammates. The varsity sportsmanship award will also be given. Gage Groves is recuperating from major surgery after having been hospitalized six weeks in Lafayette. The Groves family plans to leave for Florida in the near future. Mr. and Mrs. Groves were in Key West when called back home on account of the illness of their son. They left their trailer in a trailer camp, in Bradenton, and hope to continue their vacation. Carmel Is One Point Victor Saturday The Carmel Grayhounds were a one point victor over the Plymouth Pilgrims Saturdaynight at the Fort Wayne semistate and gained the right to meet Loogootee next Saturday at Indianapolis. The final score:s3-52. The Grayhounds won the right to play in the championship game Saturday as they defeated Fort Wayne North earlier in the afternoon in an upset. In a second thriller during the afternoon Plymouth also pulled an upset in defeating favored Kokomo Hayworth 71-64 in an overtime. Additional honors came to Carmel on Saturday as Dave Shepherd «et the state’s singleseason record of 1,011 points as he scored 57 during the day. Shepherd, son of the Cannel coach Bill Shepherd, was playing with an injured knee but is confident it will hold up for the games ahead.
