REMEMBER WHEN IT HAPPENED IN SYRACUSE ONE YEAR AGO Carl L. Tuttle of Indianapolis and Lake Wawasee has been named chairman of the board of the State Bank of Syracuse. There will be no school in the Lakeland corporation on Friday to allow teachers to attend a workshop. Billie L. Scott, 51, Syracuse, died Friday in the Robert Long hospital. Surviving is her mother. Betty Sue Anderson, r 1 Syracuse, was admitted to the Goshen hospital February 25. Paul Tague returned to his home on r 4 Thursday from the University Medical Center at Ann Arbor, Mich. FIVE YEARS AGO Mrs. Chloe Alma Hire, 90, died Sunday in the Hutchinson nursing home in Goshen. Survivors include two sons, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two sisters. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Stucky will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary Sunday at open house in their home from 2 to 5 o’clock. The Syracuse License Branch, now located in the Syracuse Hardware, will move to a new location March 1. The branch will be located at 107 N. Huntington street. Autos driven by Bobby Folger and Sue Traster were damaged $750 in a mishap in town on February 25. Mr. and Mrs. Merrill Norris, Lake Wawasee, are home from a vacation in Florida. TEN YEARS AGO Syracuse will have the opportunity to see one of the biggest attractions in basketball on March 22 when the Harlem Magicians play in the local gym. Services were conducted here Sunday in separate ceremonies for Mrs. Bertha Viola Meek and Mrs. Roscoe Smith, sisters who were victims of an auto accident Thursday. Jesse T. Mitchell was taken to the Goshen hospital by ambulance Tuesday night after suffering a heart attack. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Stiffler are the parents of a daughter born on February 28 in the Elkhart hospital. Everett Ketering and Jack Kline are traveling in the west. They plan to visit Mr. Ketering’s daughter and family at San Antonio, Texas, before returning home. TWENTY YEARS AGO The Pilcher Shoe store will move to a new location, the Colwell building this month. Mrs. W. G. Connolly is expected home from Green Cove Springs, Fla., this week end. Mr. and Mrs. Theo Thomas have purchased an 80 acre farm from Clee Ribschman and moved there this week. Mr. and Mrs. Harry VanHemert are back from a trip through Oklahoma, Texas, and New Orleans. di Gras. On Wednesday there was nothing to be seen of Syracuse except snow. FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO Miss Julia Ann Ott, 69, died on February 27. She was one of eight children of the Ott family. A snowstorm and blizzard set in Saturday and continued through Sunday. Louise Snobarger entertained the junior class in her home on Friday following the basketball game. A car of a freight train, while switching, jumped the track and J hit the Syracuse Feed MUI building, badly damaging it Tuesday morning. A giant owl was killed near Cedar Point. Lake Wawasee, Saturday, by William Larkin. % LOOKING UP CLASS MEETS The Looking Up class of the Syracuse Church of the Brethren held a class party February 21 in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Nicodemus. Darell Bowman presided and heard the reports. The class will purchase carpet for the church nursery. The women brought food in decorated boxes which was auctioned off. The money will go to the building fund of the church. The next meeting will be with Rev. and Mrs. Jack Farrell on March 7. Present Second Lenten Program The Syracuse Ministerial Association will sponsor the second of its series of Lenten programs this Sunday evening, March 8. 4 The Gospelaires. a well-known gospel singing quartets will present a program of religious music. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Calvary United Methodist church on state road 13 south of Syracuse* Future programs include the Grace college brass ensemble and student choir and a film entitled ‘Dawn of Victory” as well as the Syracuse elementary choir under the direction of Mrs. Ditmer.
