With the approach of the 1970 sectional basketball tournament, several Syracuse "old timers” waxed nostalgic about the golden years of basketball with the yellow and gold. One of these was Syracuse attorney R. I-eon Connolly. He was a member and captain of the town's famous team of 1926 that went to the state tournament's "Sweet Sixteen" under the banner of the late Court Slabaugh as coach. Connolly paid quiet tribute to coach Slabaugh as "the greatest coach in these parts," having taken two teams to the state tournament in the M.‘\en year period he coached at Syracuse high school. Connolly himself played regular for the yellow and gold for four years, having been captain of the team for throe years. He carried enough "hash marks” on his high school sweater to compare him with an army top kick with 30 years of tour duty behind him. He said when he was a senior, the Syracuse team" won all 20 K.imr< <>| the neduird mwo. the last one being over New Pari- -7j to 10' New Paris had just defeated Nappanee and looked to Syracuse as a cinch. Actually, they only have a few with the long braids. *• • ■ A few have found their favorite watering hole, the Pickwick bounce. to be closed for sexeral w’eeks. Red and Evelyn Marlin, owners and operators, took a well deserved rest, but will be back «oon. They locked up to visit New Orleans and see the annual Mardi Gras, something Red has always wanted to do. They planned to go from there to Las Vegas, and. according to Red. "if the money holds out. we'd like to visit San Francisco." • * * Town marshals in the county towns are becoming a force to reckon with. They are scheduled to meet for the first time at I p m. Wednesday of this week at the Mentone town hall to consider candidates for county sheriff they will give tacit support. So far incumbent sheriff Dave Andrews is the only candiate to file on the Democratic ticket, but there is a possibility former deputy sheriff under Andrews (three years) Fred Carlin of r 2 Warsaw, will be a candidate. On the Republican ticket those already filed are Tom Anglin of Atwood and Bud Hall of Milford. DURABLE PRESS TROUSERS LAFAYETTE Durable pTOKS is a general term referring to the new "no iron” finishes Though they do save ironing time, says Billie Ellsworth. Purdue university's extension clothing and textiles specialist, the cost is generally more. If you plan to shop clearance sales for durable press trousers, remember sale merchandise is usually not returnable. So be sure to purchase correct size and length Should the wrong length be purchased or received as a gif t or hand-me-down. durable press trousers can be shortened but not lengthened You can never remove the original crease The same is true if you attempt to shorten cuffed, durable press trousers using conventional methods Heat has been applied by high temperature presses or by baking in a special oven This changes the structure of the chemically treated fabric and "sets" the shape permanently Nou the garmet has a permanent press Methods that can be used to shorten durable press trousers— For trousers without a cuff, simply turn up the amount you want to shorten For trousers with a cuff, change them to a cuffless style and turn up a hem To maintain the original style, cut off pants even with the top of cuff, Decide how much pants are to be shortened, then sew cuff onto pants dt this point Conceal seam under the cuff. For the most finished appearance, stitch so that seam is on outside of pant leg Press seam down and whip into place by hand
