Wawasee Students Enter Region Leadership Confab
Members of the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) of Wawasee high school will participate m the region 2 leadership conference, to be held Thursday, Feb, 12, at Goshen high school. Also participating will be DECA students from four South Bend schools, tw-o Elkhart schools. Goshen, Warsaw and Jimtown hi-’h schools. Junior High (go Hi Lites GAA ENJOYS SKATING AND SKIING By DARETTA GRISAMER The Syracuse GAA went skating and skiing last month. Skiing was on the 14th and 28th and skating was on the 26. Jan Davis. Brenda Byrd, Rhonda Bell, Ann Brice. Lynne Murray, Lori Rinker. Robin Dust. Tina Searfoss. Deb Hostetler. Sherry Myers and Sherri Hapner went skiing. There were 27 who went skating. The GAA is in the process of getting a girls’ basketball team. They will be playing other teams soon.
Has Business Support / DECA is the only nation-wide youth organization on the high school level for students preparing for occupations in the field of marketing, merchandising and distribution. Miss Snideman pointed out that a number of large businesses have contributed heavily to the establishment and implementation of the DECA program, citing as examples Sears-Roebuck Co., Montgomery Ward Co., J. C. Penney. Firestone. W. T. Grant, among others. These companies have relied heavily on the DECA program to supply them with a ready work force. James Frederick Initiated Into Theta Chi FINDLAY. Ohio — James A. Frederick, son of Mr. and Mrs." Wilmer J. Frederick of 130 east Boston street, Syracuse, has been initiated into the colony of Theta Chi Fraternity on the Findlay college campus. Findlay. A junior, Mr.. Frederick is majoring in English and is a member of the college choir. He graduated from Syracuse high school in 1967, where he received honors in bookkeeping, and is a member of the Syracuse Church of God. Mi. and Mrs Dav.d Wright and daughter Legina of Milford returned from San Juan, Puerto Rico, January 24, where they visited Mrs Wrights parents.' Mr. and Mrs. Allan Dierks. Mrs. Robert Nordin and Mrs. Esther Charlton, all of Milford, attended the funeral of their cousin. Mrs. Herman Kidwell, in Gary, recently. Mrs. Kidwell was formerly Verona Biller whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Biller, were former residents of Milford. NANCY JO GUNDERLOCK Our first senior of the week is Nancy Jo Gander lock, daughter of Mrs. Mary Gunderlock of Milford. Nancy Jo will graduate with majors in business, history, Spanish and English and a minor in math. Business is her favorite subject. An active member of the senior class, she is a pompon girl, treasurer of the senior class, a member of GAA, Y-teens, Drama cldb, newspaper staff, the prom and homecoming committees and the executive council. She has a typing aw : ard. Nancy plans to work in an office this summer, then attend two years of business college at Manchester. She has older brothers, Paul, who works in New Paris and Denny, who works at Weatherhead. Football and baseball are her favorite sports and “Gone with the Wind’’ is her favorite book. Her hobbies are bowling, ice and roller skating and knitting. —WHS—ALICE LEACH Alice Leach lists art as her favorite subject. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Leach of r 1 North Webster and will graduate with majors in English and social studies and minors in” music, math, art, typing and science. Another active member of the senior class, she was in the pep club her first two years of high school and the Block W for the past two years. She was in the YFC for two years and has been in the Drama club for three years. Alice has been in the music contests her freshman, sophomore and senior years and has been in the music club her junior and senior years and is in the chorus this year. She was a member of the Wizard of Oz cast her freshman year and in the Wawasee Prep play this year. She also belongs to her church's youth choir and the Omega Key elds. Alice has a library award and a music award. After graduation she plans to work and then go to either Anderson college or Gulf Coast Bible college. Alice has one brother. Walter, who is 14 and in the eighth grade. She enjoys babysitting and working in Leedy's Variety store. Ba?ketball and wrestling are her favorite sports and reading and going to WHS wrestling meets are her hobbies. —WHS—- ’ RONALD EUGENE METZGER Ronald Eugene Metzger plans to attend Huntington college and become a school teacher after he graduates from WHS. Studies club and the Science club and also belongs to the Syracuse Church of the Brethren. He has won a magazine sales award and a perfect attendance award. Ron’s older brother, Edward Stater, works at Uniroyal in Warsaw and lives in Cromwell. Ron works at Foo and Faye’s Chinese restaurant during the summer. Basketball is his favorite sport; the Bible is his favorite book and playing a guitar, drawing pictures and studying famous quotes are his hobbies. -WHS—GARY WAYNE NEWCOMER Gary is one of the athletes of the senior class. He plays' basketball, football, varsity track and cross country and is a member of the Letterman’s club with four majors in sports. Gary has received his senior athletic jacket. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Zimmerman of r 2 Milford. English and auto mechanics are his majors. Business and social studies are his minors. Auto mechanics is his favorite subject. Gary has one brother, Dennis Lee. who is serving in the navy, Dennis is married to the former Nancy Wilson of Milford and has a daughter, Kimberly Kay. Our senior works at Zimmerman Gravd. He lists football and track as his favorite sports. Water skiing and working on junk cars are his hobbies. OKIZU CAMP FIRE GIRLS MEET By TONDA MILLER The OKIZU Camp Fire girls of Syracuse met Monday in the Syracuse Scout cabin for their ceremonial. The meeting opened with the WOHELO call followed by the handsign of the fire. The Camp Fire law was” repeated and roll call answered with the members Indian names. A nfew member. Kathy Bradon, was greeted. The awarding of honors followed. Each one as the hondr was received, acted it out, and sang one song. The Fire Makers desire was repeated. After the ceremonial refreshments were served. Killie White and Jenny Cox are to bring the refreshments for the next meeting. FARMERETTES HOLD SECOND MEETING The Leesburg Plain Farmeretts met January 27 in the Leesburg school cafeteria. The 4-H pledge was led by Robin Lursen and the American pledge by Tammy Klopenstein This was followed by devotions by’ Karen Pound and health and safety by Millie Goff on "Slippery Roads.” Demonstrations were given by !sathy Ashton on "Butter Icing” and Pam Kuhn on "Easter Baskets Dessert and Easter Bonnets.” The next meeting will be February 10.

Eight Receive First Place Ratings In Group One Saturday
A total of eight solos and ensembles from Wawasee high school placed first in group one at the vocal, piano and string district contest held at Bishop Luers high school in Fort Wayne on Saturday. This makes them eligible to participate in the state contest later in the month. Receiving firsts in group one are Melinda Moor, alto solo; Connie Geiger, piano solo; Clark Rassi. piano solo; Madrigal vocal ensemble numbers one and two; girts vocal ensembles numbers one and two and the boys’ barbershop quartet. Those placing second in the group were Connie Christner, soprano solo; Susie Smith, soprano solo; Rick McDonald, tenor solo; Dan Van Lue, bass solo; Carolyn Rapp, piano solo, Elaine Hoopingamer, piano solo; and the mixed vocal quartet. B and mixed vocal ensemble CSeconds were received by Elaine Kilmer, piano solo; girls’ vocal ensemble A, mixed vocal ensemble A, mixed vocal ensemble D and piano duet. In group five Cindy Greiner received a first place rating for her piano solo. Students earning a first rating in group one are eligible to compete in the state music contest at Butler university on February 21. Twenty-seven students from Wawasee high school will represent the vocal department of Wawasee high school in that event. Wawasee high school band students will participate in the district music contest next Saturday at Rochester Students receiving first ratings in group one will also be eligible to compete in the state music.contest at Butler university.
