United brings 'U-Touch’ to Lakeland area
United Telephone Company of % Indiana, Inc., was organized in 1931 and served 23,518 telephones in 64 exchanges in Indiana. Since its inception, United has implemented an expansion program through growth within its operating territory and through acquisitions of otherUelephone companies. Currency, United Telephone serves 150,425 telephones in 100 exchanges. All of these exchanges are dial operated and some, including Leesburg, Millersburg and Nappanee, offer “U-Touch" service. During 1969. United expanded 812.300,000 for extensive improvements throughout its exchanges in Indiana. This amount includes sizable expenditures in the Bargersville, Bremen Corunna, Franklin. Monticello, Nineveh. Salamonia, Topeka. Trafalgar, and Warsaw exchanges for new buildings and central office equipment. The next decade for United includes plans to convert the present central office equipment in a number of exchanges to the latest comfnon control switching equipment. With thus new type of equipment United Telephone will be in a position to offer additional services, including “U-Touch" telephones and automatic number identification for direct distance*dialed calls. Direct distance dialing will be offered to all subscribers. Also, ’ the number of lines between exchanges within a local calling area will be increased. Local calling areas will be expanded to include nearby exchanges where warranted. The present program of burying local and long distance
