Va WINTER WHEAT ACREAGE SMALLEST SINCE 1866 LAFAYETTE—Indiana farmers planted 832.000 acres of winter wheat last fall. 13 per cent fewer than the 1968 seeding and the smallest acreage since records began in 1866. State-federal agricultural statisticians at Purdue university estimate the 1970 crop will amount to 30.8 million bushels. If this size crop materializes, the 1970 production will be 12 per cent smaller than the 1969 output and the lowest Indiana production since 1951. The statisticians note that the crop is going into the winter in good condition. Indiana farmers also planted 86.000 acres of rye in the fall of 1969. This is four per cent below the acreage level of 1968. but five per cent larger than that of 1967. VISITING FROM JAMAICA Miss Barbara Jean -Fick is visiting her sister. CWO3 and Mrs. Robert E. According to the department, paprika can mask “undesirable qualities” in meat. Paprika, a weak flavored red pepper, preserves the color characteristics after meat has begun to spoil. This may be especially noted in ground beef. Paprika also produces a reddish color meat fat causing the product to,appear leaner than it really is. The ban is effective as of January 15 and will apply to all federally inspected fresh meat and fresh meat products. Spanish type Chorizo and Italian brand sausages are the only exceptions. Officials say these were exempted "because there is reason to believe that consumers generally expect to find paprika in these products.” It is also felt that consumers do not generally depend . on color to indicate freshness or quality.
