ICE FISHING—One of the area’s most popular outdoor winter sports is ice fishing. The indoor, sedentary type wonders why, but a passing look at area lakes this time of year assures us this is true. Two such fishermen, working their hobby on five-inch ice at the Slip on the west side of Lake Wawasee are these two men. On the left is Grover Lockwood of Goshen, fishing with his father, Harold Lockwood of Millersburg.

AROUND The holiday season abounded in small parties, too numerous to innumerate, but one of the nicest was the one held at the Paul Moore home on North Shore Drive, Syracuse Lake, on December 20. The Moores proved gracious host and hostess to about 50 guests, and the holiday spirit prevailed. Their three daughters, Cathy, home from Indiana university, Melinda, a Wawasee high school senior, and Cindy, a Wawasee high school freshman, were on hand to welcome guests and make conversation easier. The Moore home, recently remodeled, with its open burning fireplace, provided a perfect setting for a perfect holiday gathering. The ladies were exquisitely gowned and the gentlemen well groomed. A buffet table provided the delicacies to make a perfect evening. • Unexpected to all, even to the host and hostess, was a surprise appearance of Santa Claus, in the person of Tom Prickett. He reached into his large red bag to come up with a miniature candy cane for each guest. * * * Jerry Herbison appears to have worked his will upon the Syracuse town board and the state highway department n persuading them to turn the uptown stoplight on “caution” during the late evening and early morning hours. Jerry admitted to the town board at a recent meeting of being “bugged” by having to wait for a red stoplight at an early morning hour when no other car was in sight. Well, his complaint got the job done: The light now goes on caution at about 11 p.m. * * * It would appear Will Erwin of Etna Green, unsuccessful congressional candidate last year, will make another bid for the Third District seat held by John Brademas. Erwin sent Mrs. Alton (Lillie’* Beeson, a patient at the Pierceton nursing home who observed her 100th birthday on Monday, Dec. 22, a bouquet of red roses. She received many gifts from dignitaries. including a letter from President Nixon, but the roses from Erwin appeared,to carry a particular import, particularly to local Republicans. She received a note from Lady Bird Johnson from Johnson City, Texas, stating both ladies had birthdays on the same day. Milford postmaster Paul Kizer, when hearing this, came up with

this remark: “That’s nothing: Lady Bird and I both have the same birthday, too, and we’re the same age—s7!” « « # Johnnie and Mary Kimble, of the Kale Island Beacon, were scheduled to leave Friday for Orlando, Fla., where they will spend January and February. They will pull their boat along behind their car. « ♦ * Seen: In the yard of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Money a sign which read, “Welcome Home, Pat.” Their son Pat is in California, and was expected home sometime this week. He recently completed a tour of duty in Viet Nam. * $ * Nelson Auer is getting out of

the service station and auto parts business after 25 years of real service to the community. Auer, a 1938 Syracuse high school graduate, has to be one of the community’s hardest working men. His job at the station and operator of his station’s wrecker, has kept him on a 10-hour day, six days a week for years. During his years in the service he had a similar long-suffering job with the quartermaster. Nelson’s future plans are indefinite, but he plans to spend the month of February in the Brownsville, Texas, area for a ’ starter. ♦ ♦ ♦ Kosciusko county commissioners were on the spot Monday when they were asked to name a trustee for Tippecanoe township by precinct committeeman of that township. Their trustee, Willis Whisler, has purchased a Lake Wawasee home and moved from Tippecanoe to Turkey Creek township, but had failed to submit a resignation to the commissioners. The commissioners stated they could not name a new trustee until the present trustee had resigned. On Tuesday morning commissioner Maurice Dorsey picked up Whisler’s resignation, and -the board named Adrian Howell as his replacement. sj» $ ♦ The Syracuse Rotary club, just concluding a successful moneymaking venture, plans to sponsor an appearance of the Ball State glee club at Wawasee high school. More on this later. « # * HAPPY NEW YEAR! Hazel Kline of Milford entertained Sunday at the Benton Community hall for 36 members of her family. Dinner and a gift exchange were enjoyed. Guests were from Claypool, Warsaw, Middlebury, Goshen, Elkhart, and Milford.
